NameEdit

A page in the Prima guide for Super Mario 3D Land names these obstacled "Spiked Bars" I don't know if we should use the name as Prima is generally unreliable. user:mariosonic444

Moon SnakeEdit

Given those look-alike things in Odyssey are called "Moon Snakes," what should be done about that? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:05, 30 October 2017 (EDT)

just moved the page. i am the best and i am like a german toad so i am awesome XD (talk) 20:16, 3 November 2017 (EDT)
Is this according to the game, or Prima? LinkTheLefty (talk) 20:29, 3 November 2017 (EDT)
In what sense? Hello, I'm Time Turner. 20:30, 3 November 2017 (EDT)

Considering the user who moved it previously has given me permission to move the page back, I'll do so shortly if nobody objects. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 20:38, 3 November 2017 (EDT)

If it was a mistake, then just go ahead.    21:23, 3 November 2017 (EDT)
Done. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 21:36, 3 November 2017 (EDT)

SplitEdit

Seems like the split request has been here for a while, so how about we resolve it. These are two completely different objects that only have the presence of spikes in common. Splitting is a better option. Spectrogram (talk) 11:55, September 12, 2022 (EDT)

Where do we put the type in the infobox infobox, which looks like a roller but acts like a bar? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 12:18, September 12, 2022 (EDT)
Shaped like a spiked roller, referred to as such in Prima too (rotating spiked roller). So it is roller Spectrogram (talk) 12:39, September 12, 2022 (EDT)

Split spiked roller from Spike BarEdit

This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit any of the sections in the proposal. If you wish to discuss the article, do so in a new header below the proposal.

split 8-0
This has been a long time coming.

Ever since this article's inception, spiked rollers have been treated the same as Spike Bars, purely because there were instances of spiked rollers in Super Mario 3D World spinning around an axis similar to the Spike Bars of Super Mario 3D Land. Spiked rollers behaving like Spike Bars is fair to include, especially since the original revision of article only stated about those spiked rollers. But the spiked rollers in 3D World are more known to be spat out and thrown by our friend Spike, and as such, that information had been added to the article soon as well, even though it's not at all how a Spike Bar usually behaves.

So over the years, this has remained the case, even with more information piling up that differentiate spiked rollers from Spike Bars, such as different names, a second instance of an actual Spike Bar in Super Mario Run, and the fact that spiked rollers that look the same as those in 3D World actually debuted in 3D Land alongside the Spike Bars, behaving differently from those as well. Even weirder is that spiked rollers actually outnumber Spike Bars in appearances throughout the franchise at this point, and yet the name "Spike Bar" is still prioritized, which even goes against our own policy of using the most recent name for a subject.

This proposal seeks to rectify this and split spiked rollers from Spike Bars, since it's apparent they are supposed to be different obstacles. While Spike Bars are similar to Fire Bars and are a string of smaller Spike Balls rotating around an axis, spiked rollers always have looked like a single, cylindrical entity and typically roll forwards in a straight line, sometimes thrown by Spike and sometimes swung around while attached to chains.

SupportEdit

  1. Arend (talk) Per proposal.
  2. FanOfYoshi (talk) Per proposal. They should have never been merged to begin with.
  3. Jdtendo (talk) Per proposal.
  4. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - Awkward merge based purely on happenstance and using this to throw all similar objects in. Per proposal.
  5. Mario (talk) Weird merge.
  6. Axis (talk) Two different objects that have different functionality.
  7. TheFlameChomp (talk) Per all.
  8. Mushroom Head (talk) Per all, spike bar is made up of spiked balls, while spiked roller is actually a continuous bar. Bars are not rollers by the way.

CommentsEdit

Spiked rollers are also a Zelda thing, they even have the same "Toge Roller" name. That's not mentioned in the article, should it? Blinker (talk) 12:47, November 25, 2023 (EST)

This is the first time I've heard about the spiked rollers being in Zelda, so I'm not well-versed about its appearances there. Apparently the Link's Awakening boss Spike Roller seems to spit out these obstacles the same way as Spike does in 3D World, so maybe that could at least be mentioned in the Trivia section?  rend (talk) (edits) 13:06, November 25, 2023 (EST)
Nah, he pushes one, and they appear commonly in other games as well. Anyways, this would fall under generic subjects, so it need not be mentioned here. (Weirdly I was just thinking about that miniboss immediately before looking at this, lol) Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:14, November 25, 2023 (EST)
Oh, I didn't know these were an actual thing. That said, this still feels like a Fire Bar type thing... Especially how they roll back and forth in the 2D games is so similar. Well, whatever, if it's an actual, generic thing, then nevermind... Blinker (talk) 13:27, November 25, 2023 (EST)
They're probably based off these things. Or just standard skewers, mulchers, compactors, and/or grinders.... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:31, November 25, 2023 (EST)

Btw, I've noticed that someone had put Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope in the infobox's "Latest appearance" section, but nothing else; I can't really find anything about it elsewhere on the wiki, either. Can anyone tell me what this appearance exactly entails? If the two articles are going to be split, I think it's important that we know if this latest appearance is that of the Spike Bar or the spiked roller.  rend (talk) (edits) 05:58, November 26, 2023 (EST)

I've also made example pages for Spike Bar and spiked roller post-split. Let me know what you think could be added or changed:

Good start. I'd have the gallery include more instances where the obstacle is featured without the Spike enemy throwing it.   It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 18:15, November 26, 2023 (EST)
