Charizard

Template:SSB Infobox Charizard is a Fire/Flying-type Pokémon, and the fully evolved form of Charmander. It appeared in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee as a Poké Ball Pokémon, and in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a playable character.

In Super Smash Bros., it would eventually come out of a Poké Ball, spitting fire to either sides of it, burning the characters.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, a Charizard returned from Super Smash Bros. as one of the Pokémon that spawns from Poké Balls, and attacks in the same way as how it did in the previous game.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Charizard appears as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, it is not an actual new character, per se, but rather one of the Pokémon used by the Pokémon Trainer, the real character. However, Charizard, as well as Squirtle and Ivysaur, does all the fighting for the Pokémon Trainer. Charizard is the last Pokémon to be used by Pokémon Trainer, coming after Squirtle and Ivysaur. When Pokémon Change is used while Ivysaur is in use, Ivysaur will be returned, and Charizard will be sent out. After Charizard, the Pokémon queue will start with Squirtle again. Charizard is the heaviest of the group. Charizard is also able to glide.

In the Subspace Emissary, Charizard is the last Pokémon that the Pokémon Trainer collects. Lucas and the trainer first see Charizard flying into a mountain and Pokémon Trainer points out to Lucas that it is the third Pokémon he must collect. After traveling through the mountain, Pokémon Trainer and Lucas find Charizard who attacks them at sight. The two battle the large Pokémon and after defeat, Charizard is turned to a trophy. The trainer collects the trophy and Charizard joins the party.

Special Moves

Flamethrower

Flamethrower has been Charizard's attack since Super Smash Bros. In the first two games, Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, Charizard would use Flamethrower when released from the Poké Ball. This would damage all the opposing players. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl (in which Charizard is a playable character rather than a Poké Ball Pokémon), it is Charizard's standard Special Move. When used, Charizard will shoot fire in the direction it is facing, which will damage the opponents, similar to its attack in the first two games, and Bowser's Fire Breath. However, Charizard's Flamethrower causes more damage and has a larger range of effect than Bowser's Fire Breath. Kirby can use this move after copying Charizard's powers.

Rock Smash

Rock Smash is Charizard's Side special move. When used, Charizard will pull out a big rock, and smash it with its head, devastating any players hit by the "exploding" rock. The attack is based on the actual Pokémon attack called Rock Smash. It is a close range attack.

Fly

Fly in action.

Fly is the Up Special Move of Charizard. All that happens is that every time the attack code is pressed, Charizard flaps its wings once to fly upwards. It is also engulfed in fire to launch and burn foes above it. This is not often used, due to Charizard's three jumps and gliding ability are usually able to send it back. This can be used, however, as an effective battle move. This move has almost no horizontal distance, similar to the Super Dedede Jump.

Switching out Charizard when using Pokémon Change will summon Squirtle.

Fire Blast

In the move Triple Finish, Charizard continually blasts the foe with Fire Blast. This attack is the finisher of the Final Smash, the other two rack up damage.

Trivia

• Charizard's Japanese name, Lizardon, is also the name of a character from the game, Wario's Woods.
• Charizard's name is a combination of the words char (meaning burnt) and lizard (since it's a lizard-like creature).
• If Charizard's tail is ever submerged under the water in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, or if it is raining, its flame will not go out.
• If Charizard jumps into the water, it will start groaning as if it is in pain, since it's a fire-type Pokémon.
