The biggest problem is that this guy is using DYNAMIC IPs, and thus, it's VERY difficult for us to stop this guy completely. The best we can do is every time he tries to create new accounts to bypass every single ban we place on him, we just block those as well. And IP bans are done in extremely rare circumstances -- even then, according to the rules, we have to place a temporary time limited on them too so that legitimate users can still sign up under that said IP that we blocked in hopes of getting a certain banned user to cease their disruptive ways on this wiki. --M. He's not harming the wiki and there aren't an overwhelming amount of socks being made or whatever, so there's no need to go blocking swathes of IPs, which could potentially affect innocent users as well. - Walkazo 12:41, 13 November 2011 (EST)

Reviewing the block log, most of the IP addresses blocked for "Vandal's IP" are in the range of 58.110.0.0/16. We must be looking at different logs, because I see a range of IPs that have been blocked, and the CheckUser logs also show that socks are being created all across the board. Imageframe(?) tag?

Hey Walkazo, I've tried asking 2257 about something (it's pretty important because I need it for NWiki), but he didn't seem to be responding - so here is the original message:

• "Hello 2257, I recall seeing some kind of imageframe tag being used in one of the articles in MarioWiki and I can't seem to figure out where it is, or what the name is. I need to know what is the name of the tag, and how it functions. As far as my knowledge goes, it allows you to display two images in a frame without any overlapping. Do you know what it is? I'm pretty sure you're looking for {{Multiple image}} and/or {{Multiframe}}. A handy back-to-back comparison is here. Other examples of {Multiple image} in use can be found here (different sized images), here (same sized images), and here (one summary for both images). Examples of {Multiframe} are here (comparing background-less images, whereas the first template is good for images with backgrounds) and here (making more room for a caption and even adding a background colour). My edit on the Ludwig page

I already had a feeling that someone would delete my edit despite the reference I added. So thanks for restoring it. Still. Some questions for you. Why was "precocious" changed to "presumptuous"? Both have quite a different meaning. Was the translation wrong? Aside from that. Is it normal that Bop1996 can just ignore the reference I added and delete all my edits on all five Koopaling pages I edited? I just went with the word that was already on the page. I checked it out, and it turns out neither word seems to be correct, at least according to my dictionaries. The passage can be romanized as Otona bite namaikina, nakama no uchi de ichiban no zunō ha? (I think - I did this really quick so there might be slight discrepancies); all I could find for otona bite is "grow up", and namaikina is "conceited"; "precocious", "presumptuous" nor "arrogant" appear, but maybe the guy who translated it was taking liberties to make it scan better. I think the second part translates to "number one brains/group head (ichiban no zunō ha) within the group (nakama no uchi de)". But I'm far from being fluent in Japanese, so take this with a grain of salt. As for the normality of the situation... sometimes if things are added wrong, the knee-jerk reaction of users is to take it off to preserve the quality of the page, rather than go to the effort of fixing it; maybe that's what happened here, but I can't speak on Bop1996's behalf. On Roy's page, the fact that it's his defining feature isn't exactly key info (unlike the insights into the characters of Wendy, Iggy, Lemmy and Ludwig); having it there wouldn't be bad or anything, but I was short on time so I didn't re-add it. - Walkazo 23:42, 15 November 2011 (EST)

I asked one of my Japanese TAs and she said the most direct translation of 「大人びて」 otona bite is "adultish" - like "childish", but the opposite way around. So, "precocious" is actually a good approximation for the description. I checked my other dictionary for 「ナマイキな」 namaikina (also written 「生意気な」) and again it offered "conceited", as well as "impertinent" and "smart-alecky", but not "arrogant" (and Google offered up "cheeky", but it's not the most trustworthy dictionary; another online dictionary also had "insolent" and "impudent" given as possible interpretations). - Walkazo 21:02, 16 November 2011 (EST)

Is the fact that a recent Nintendo Power called it Kuribo's Shoe enough to change the name of the article Raven Effect (talk)

According to MarioWiki:Naming, the latest name has precedence, but I don't think Nintendo Power is a very strong source. Warning on my talk page by this user

I know I wasn't supposed to change the date on the Mario Kart 7 page, but User:Jazama gave me a warning even though (s)he's not an admin. I followed the warning (I didn't do anything else bad). Yes, regular users can hand out warnings. There's a couple specific things that only admins can warn people about, such as abusing warning privileges, but editing warnings like yours aren't staff-only. You can see the Warning Policy for more information. - Walkazo 20:15, 6 December 2011 (EST)

Deletion TPPs

What exactly is the policy on deletion TPPs that are on articles where the subjects clearly violate policy (coverage or otherwise) when created? The TPP on Talk:Lakitu (character) seems to have dissent on both sides and doesn't have an obvious policy to back up either side, but the TPP on Talk:Wuhu Island is on a subject that is clearly outside the coverage policy and inconsistent with other course-related articles aside. Is there a good course of action to follow each time there is a deletion TPP where the answer is obvious due to policy? Bop1996 _(Talk)

As far as I know, there's no official policy, but I think the rule-of-thumb is that TPPs are left to run their course even if the decision's obvious, except in extreme cases like one-liners, fanon, offensive material or some other utterly deleterious blight on the face of the wiki that should be removed ASAP. However, proposers of non-dire no-brainer decisions can always be encouraged to simply close the TPP and go through with the change/deletion, but if that window of opportunity closes, or if opposition does arise, the TPP has to stay up. - Walkazo 21:04, 6 December 2011 (EST)

I was looking at them and mostly I liked (it seems you're going to give your opinion in this proposal.) May ask, do you want me to give you some opinion to your templates? Yes, find the correct color for the background and match for the header can be troublesome at times. For that kind of problems I use the charts of this article to compare most of the colors, find a nice combination and the best color for the text that should contrast with the composition. Sure, this is my way, and you have your own, no problem with that. Look, I'll return to the forums to talk about that in the templates' thread and give my suggestions to the draft you've made. Additionally I was rewriting the template help article because it needed a radical update - although it's still unfinished. You can see for yourself and find what else needs to be completed... It's MarioWiki:Changing username - just post you request there (it's more official and gives us a nice complete record of all name changes). I'm not sure if you recall my username, but I used to be very active here back in 2008-2010. Anyways, I was thinking of becoming kinda active again and returning to the community. Yes, and I've been gradually replacing them, but school's been killer this year so it's taking a while (when I go to replace the categories, I fix up the minigame articles at the same time, which makes it much more labour-intensive - but getting a chance to edit pages I usually don't visit is why I love maintenance projects like category updating). Because User:AwesomeSponge (count) has been here for a while, only for socializing purposes. Out of his 30 edits, he made a grand total of 0 edits to the article space. He does not seem to be making any mainspace edits, nor will he make one in the near future, given his actions. On external wikis, he has been editing in the same manner: no mainspace edits, just socializing, socializing, and more socializing, and pleading to be an admin (you can see his Wikipedia RfA; this is unacceptable). No, it's not. We even have a warning template specifically to tell users to stop focusing on user stuff and actually edit the wiki. There's no rule against avatars as long as the image complies with the regular Image Policy, and you can put it in the sig as long as you follow the Signature Policy (i.e. no more then 2 images, 35px in height, or only 1 animated GIF - which you're actually in violation of with your current sig, so you have to change your signature either way). - Walkazo 21:06, 14 January 2012 (EST)

You can have two static images or you can have a gif - the sitenotice is specifically talking about both types of images, and with "gif" covering the animated stuff, that leaves "images" for the rest. "Image" can indeed talk about gifs as well as any other type of file, but in this context, it's not. An attempt to revamp major article types

Hey Walkazo, has there been any attempts on establishing article structures (a set of procedures that users must follow when it comes to creating/editing a certain type of article), if so, can you inform me the proposals whether or not it had been passed? The reason I asked this is that I've been digging through my old notes of MarioWiki, NIWA, and Nintendo Wiki, and while I was surfing MarioWiki - I greatly noticed that articles are getting longer, and parts of the article are starting to become redundant and unnecessary even. I came upon a proposed article structure on "Games" in my notes, and I have no idea what year I wrote that thing. With both aspects combined together, I decided to come to you first for clarification and explanation before going forward. I am considering on targeting all major articles (Games, Characters, Places, Items, Species, Allies, Enemies, and Special Moves - pretty much all of them in the "Browse" section). There have been a number of admin board discussions, but I don't think we've had time to make official policies about it yet. It's mainly my fault - making standard layouts for the various types of pages has been on my to-do list for months and months, but I keep getting side-tracked by other projects. Basically, the way I see it, pages can be divided into a few different classes: Series, Games, Levels/Worlds, Minigames, and Content (Characters, Species, Items, Places, Moves, etc.), plus RL stuff and non-game media. Each class would get its own basic section order; different kinds of Content would have the same overall order, but at different complexities - i.e. some Characters would have Relationship sections while others don't, and Items certainly wouldn't have those either. For Characters, I think the idea was..... Intro -> Creation -> History (Background -> actual appearances) -> General Information (Personality -> Physical Description -> Powers and Abilities) -> Relationships -> Official Profiles and Statistics -> List of Appearances -> Quotes -> Gallery -> Names in Other Languages -> Trivia -> References -> External Links .....Games was a bit more up in the air, what with all the misc. stuff at the bottom, and I haven't really looked into any other types of pages at all. I recently went through all the Mario Party series minigames, however, so they're pretty homogenous (at least in the newer games, once I knew what I was going for). I really don't recommend changing your name to that - it's a bit lengthy, so it'll be a pain for you to type and I'm worried it'll look odd on histories and contribution scores and whatnot. We haven't set a hard and fast rule stating you need to stay under a minimum number of characters for a user name, but that's mainly because we're hoping common sense will do the work for us. I also don't think there's a rule against parentheses, but I've never seen them used, which makes me wonder if there might be issues about using them... And on a personal note, I really rather you not change your name - your name is "RAP", not "RAP + advertising". Loads of talk pages left unread...what to do...?

Hey Walkazo, I have upcoming plans for MarioWiki to scan literally every talk page that has to do with wiki problems, articles in general, or etc. I'll be sending you a document listing all the talk pages so you and the staff of MarioWiki can figure out what to do with my work. I know that tagging {{talk}} means they're automatically categorized under Category:Unresolved_talk_pages, or Category:Unresolved_Talk_Page_Proposals; but I plan on categorizing the talk problems under specific slots to make it easier for you guys to answer these unanswered questions more accurately. I will also plan on pulling out interesting conversations that are relevant to the present that needs dire attention.

I have some questions:

• If there's a bunch of jibber-jabber (for example, Talk:Queen_Bean#what to do?), is it advisable for me to remove it?
• Are there any other things I should watch out when scanning talk pages (like if a talk page has no main article, delete it; or if there's cursing, and there's meaningful discussion, should I censor it per say...)?
• May be unrelated to what I'm talking about, but how is staff activity, and wiki activity in general? I haven't heard much of it, but I already hear from you that it's going slow. Checking by the recent changes page, activity is slow as well. The reason I asked you this is that I'm figuring out if you guys are willing to take my results seriously in a-mass of the school period still in session.

I tried to go through all the unresolved talk pages myself a while back, answering simple questions and removing the template for things that aren't relevant anymore... I didn't last long, but I'm easily diverted. Anyway, I personally would like to see casual conversations like that removed on site when they're made, but the whole "no removing others; comments" rules generally gives folks pause, and removing them retroactively will definitely raise eyebrows, so I recommend leaving them alone. Sometimes talk pages are supposed to remain even if their parent page has been deleted: namely, if there is a TPP on the talk page, it must stay, and if there's discussion about why a page was deleted and why it shouldn't be recreated, even without an official proposal protecting it, I'd wager no one would object to that talk page remaining intact. Here's the Proposal. I just made the trees using GIMP - I started with the columns of names and drew the lines afterwards. No worries. You don't have to remove the proposal: wanting the image back is a perfectly valid stance regardless of the process behind its removal. If you want, you could reword it so that it definitely can't be interpreted the wrong way (i.e. turn the second, third and fourth sentences into something like "the admins thought it was unnecessary and removed it, but I just don't agree with that decision"), but the full story being present in the Opposition votes is already good enough for me. - Walkazo 22:55, 20 February 2012 (EST)

I'm really sorry, but as per Rule 12, you can only change proposals within the first three days of their creation, and that change was four days past the proposal's launch, so I had to undo it. As I said in a comment there, you can wait and make another proposal or you can ask for this one to be cancelled, so that you can replace it with a new three-way TPP. You'd probably have a better change at getting a positive outcome from a new TPP anyway, since a lot of people who have already opposed, yet who support the idea of a still image, might not check back and change their vote to the new option. - Walkazo 09:52, 24 February 2012 (EST)

Princess Daisy

So it came to my attention that there are currently two articles on Princess Daisy one for the games and one for the movies do to the passage of this proposal [2] however that proposal (or at least part of it) was overturned because of this proposal [3] so because of that proposal which states that we shouldn't create seperate pages for the non game versions of characters. The second proposal doesn't overturn the first. The old debate is whether the movie characters are the same as the game characters or just loosely inspired by them, and thus, whether they deserve separate articles or not (it's also got some other stuff about non-game "baby" characters not being the Baby Characters, but that's besides the point). However, the later proposal is mainly about moving non-game info about the characters to other pages to cut down article lengths (and in the process, devalue non-game media and make them secondary to the games); while it argues that the non-game characters are automatically counterparts of the game characters, that's still totally different from the earlier discussion about whether or not the movie characters were unique from the game inspirations based on plot and depiction and whatnot. (I.e. saying "Mario in the comics is from the comics and so he's not the same Mario as in the games" is way different from "the Iggy in the movie is Koopa's cousin, is divorced, and is stupid until he's artificially smartened and turns on Koopa - that's not the same guy as the Iggy in the games, who's Koopa's young, demented yet brilliant son".) And even if the second one did revert the first one, it's way too old to act on now: lots of stuff changes in a year-and-a-half, and what was accepted wisdom in one era can easily change even without official proposals along the way. Besides, it's such a prickly issue for a lot of people, making any sort of major change out of the blue is almost guaranteed to start some edit warring. - Walkazo 01:08, 9 March 2012 (EST)

Actually, I think it's better to not rename impersonations, since that just frees up the names to be used again. We might hide the names from public, but I don't think that's even necessary. It's not like the names are making the actual users look bad - it's pretty easy to tell that these guys aren't the real admins: they have no userpages, no talk pages, they're blocked, and all but one of them didn't get any edits in anyway, so the only place the names would show up in is the new user and block logs (and the latter explicitly states they're all fakes). - Walkazo 23:22, 12 March 2012 (EDT)

No, they're different offences. Impersonation is when someone makes an account with a username similar to another user's name, while sockpuppeting is when one user creates multiple accounts. I need to let you know

Hey there :) I have only found out very recently that a web based proxy server can hide an IP Address. And I feel like it's right to let you know that I have been using a proxy at school for a while. But only to unblock the Mario Wiki at school. Back in October 2011, when I really began enjoying the Mario Wiki, and I tried to access it from school for the first time, but it was blocked. It was categorized as a non-educational game site! I thought that was ridiculous! We are a Wiki, not a game site! I appealed to the tech staff, but they refused to unblock it. A friend told me that I could access it with a proxy, and I have done so regularly at lunchtimes.
Let me say here that it was never my intention to hide the schools IP address. I just wanted to access the Wiki from School. I needed to tell you. Would you like me to refrain from doing it again?

Oh yes, ThePremiumYoshi! He helped me archive back in December 22. I was so frustrated, because I thought I could archive by moving my talk page name to User talk:YoshiKong/Archive 1 (See here for revision). I was incorrect, and I couldn't fix it, so, as a trusted friend, I gave him my password at the time, and he fixed it all up for me :) This and creating my first archive was the only edits he made. I'm not sure about the other users that have a common IP address with TPY. On an unrelated note, how's university going?

Since the proposal about removing posts on talk-pages that don't pertain to the article has passed, I think it's time to make a change to this: that way, people won't do the same mistake, and we could possibly avoid getting such comments on talk-pages as long as it is put in there.
