Hummm, why is this article written as a story?

What kind of effect does the gold shell have when its thrown underwater? Does it home in or not?
wow it's Kiryu (TC)
- It looked like it did for me. I'm pretty sure it does, yeah. I watched it follow an eel round a corner. Avengah 08:00, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
Split?[edit]
The Gold Shell in New Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario 3D World, and Mario Kart World appears to be a different object from the Gold Shells in other games. It has a different function, and as of Kart World it has a different name too ("Coin Shell"). I think it should be split. jan Misali (talk · contributions) 13:35, April 7, 2025 (EDT)
- Let's wait until the game is released first, please? PrincessPeachFan (talk) 08:55, April 9, 2025 (EDT)
- This merge is comparable to the Mario Kart Lightning Cloud and Thunder Cloud merge. The Thunder Cloud (MKGP) and Lightning Cloud (the one from MKWii) look the same but are differently named and function differently from each other, yet they are merged since the identical appearances alone is enough to consider them the same item. The Gold Shell from MKGPDX and Coin Shell from MKWorld look exactly the same so I'd argue they're the same item. I'd say this article should instead be moved to Coin Shell and be rewritten to fit that name as that seems to be the new name for the Gold Shell. -- Pizza Master (talk)
- Also worth mentioning is that the Coin Shell from Mario Kart World looks almost completely identical to the Shell worn by Gold Koopas in New Super Mario Bros. 2. The 'Gold Shell' from NSMB2 goes unnamed in official media related to the game including the files of the game itself but would presumably be called a Gold Shell given the game's naming pattern of "object X" + "Gold Ring Effect" = "Gold X" or simply Gold Koopa Shell given that it's worn by a Gold Koopa. -- Pizza Master (talk)
- Well, it went unnamed in official materials for a while, until Mario Kart World, in which it reappears with the name "Coin Shell". jan Misali (talk · contributions) 00:03, April 22, 2025 (EDT)
- I think you misunderstood. The Gold Shell is unnamed in official materials for New Super Mario Bros. 2 specifically. It is called a gold shell in official materials for Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, and Super Mario 3D World. It's even referred to as a "gold shell" in-game by Coach in Galaxy. Not meaning to be condescending, just clarifying. -- Pizza Master (talk)
- So it turns out the Mario Kart World item is actually called ゴールデンこうら (Gōruden Kōra) in Japanese, which doesn't match up with its previous names in that language either, but does match up with the Japanese name for Gold Koopas (ゴールデンノコノコ, Gōruden Nokonoko). Given that I'd now be inclined to say that it's likely meant to be the same object as the Gold Koopa shells from New Super Mario Bros. 2 at the very least. Though it doesn't feel right to me either to treat the gold shells from Super Mario Galaxy and the Mario Kart Arcade GP games as necessarily the same item. However, while I think the Japanese name they went with for the Mario Kart World item is potentially relevant, I don't think it actually matters much what they decided to call it in English and other languages either way. ("Coin Shell" strikes me as another arbitrary NoA/NoE change more than anything.) PaperSplash (talk) 18:15, April 23, 2025 (EDT)

- I mean, Gōruden Kōra or ゴールデンこうら (Golden shell) isn't that different a name from ゴールドこうら or Gōrudo Kōra (Gold shell) (The item's name in GP DX). On the point regarding the differing functionality between Galaxy and the GP series, think of the Ice Flower. It functions differently in Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros. Wii but doesn't get split pages because it's clearly the same item. -- Pizza Master (talk)
- True, but while this is getting a bit into speculation territory, I personally believe that the shared use of ゴールデン/Gōruden for both the Gold Koopa and the Mario Kart World shell is likely not a coincidence, especially given the aforementioned visual resemblance. Though fair point about the Ice Flower, I suppose. But regardless, I do also get the feeling that the gold shells from the Mario Kart Arcade GP series, the ones from Super Mario Galaxy and the ones from New Super Mario Bros. 2 onwards (excluding GP DX) were likely more-or-less conceptualized independently, for what that's worth. PaperSplash (talk) 17:43, April 24, 2025 (EDT)
- I really don't think the naming difference means anything. Nintendo has somewhat recently changed the names of many colored enemies on Mario Portal seemingly for the sake of having a consistent naming scheme, such as changing SMS Gold Bullet Bill's name from "Killer (kin'iro)" to "Golden Killer". This is most likely another example of that. Blinker (talk) 14:08, May 21, 2025 (EDT)
- TBH, I'd be all for it. Like, are we seriously gonna document these items that have nothing to do with coins on an article named Coin Shell just because they're the same color?--PopitTart (talk) 00:52, April 24, 2025 (EDT)
- That's also a good point. PaperSplash (talk) 17:43, April 24, 2025 (EDT)
- The 3D World Shell is called a Gold Shell and gives you coins so that's incorrect. Not to mention the similarity in Japanese naming between them should be enough to put this to rest. -- Pizza Master (talk)
- What's incorrect? The 3DW item being called "Gold Shell" doesn't change the fact that documenting the iterations of golden-colored shells that have nothing to do with coins under "Coin Shell" is simply silly. This choice of name for the localization clearly suggests they aren't considering these to be the same subject. Compare Rift Mario and Dark Mario, both of which are called "Kage Mario" in Japanese.--PopitTart (talk) 01:18, April 25, 2025 (EDT)
- You make good points here. However, I have more to add. There is a sort of indirect connection that the Galaxy Gold Shell has to coins. They're used to get Power Stars which are connected to coins via Red Coin, Purple Coin, Blue Coin, and 100-Coin missions. So there's an admittedly very indirect connection the shell has to coins in Galaxy. Gold Shells from GP DX are unlocked using Mario Coins (correct me if that's incorrect.) So both Galaxy and the GP series gold shells do have connections to coins even if they're indirect. -- Pizza Master (talk)
- Not sure how to explain without coming off as snarky but the supposed connection in Galaxy at least feels like more than a bit of a stretch to me. PaperSplash (talk) 15:52, April 27, 2025 (EDT)
- Fair enough. Although, if we split the Galaxy Gold Shell from the Coin Shell and only the Galaxy Gold Shell from Coin Shell, it'd feel a bit strange to me. It could be argued that Gold inherently has a connection to coins given the Coins of the Mario series are often classified as Gold coins. So the shell could be considered to have that connection by association, though I see that too is a bit of a stretch. -- Pizza Master (talk)

Split Coin Shell from Gold Shell[edit]
| This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit this section or its subsections. If you wish to discuss the article, please do so in a new section below the proposal. |
do not split and rename to Coin Shell 7-1-8-4
8 out of 13 voters (61.5%) approve the first place option.
See the above discussion. I don't think Mario Kart World's "Coin Shell" is the same thing as the "Gold Shells" seen in other games, except for New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario 3D World. These Coin Shells have a shared function that separates them from the other various Gold Shells, and the different name used in Mario Kart World reads to me like a rename of the coin-producing Gold Shells from previous games but not of the other unrelated Gold Shells.

Split Coin Shell from Gold Shell, and count previously appearing coin-producing Gold Shells as Coin Shells[edit]
- JanMisali (talk) First choice, as proposer.
- Hewer (talk) "Coin Shell" being the one that leaves behind coins and "Gold Shell" being the unrelated others makes sense to me. They do share pretty much the same design, but that's nothing new.
- Camwoodstock (talk) Per proposal. The Arcade GP and Galaxy gold shells are pretty clearly their own thing.
- PopitTart (talk) Per proposal, and what I said in the earlier discussion.
- Gold Rykitu (talk) Per all.
- PrincessPeachFan (talk): Per all.
- YoYo (talk) second choice
Split Coin Shell from Gold Shell, but do not retroactively consider pre-Mario Kart World coin-producing Gold Shells to be Coin Shells[edit]
Do not split, but rename this article to "Coin Shell"[edit]
- Hewer (talk) Second choice, I can see the argument for keeping these merged but we ought to at least reflect the most recent name.
- Arend (talk) Secondary option, see below for why I'm against the split.
- Camwoodstock (talk) Secondary option. Even if we don't split, then a rename to the most recent name should absolutely happen.
- Blinker (talk) Second choice, I guess.
- Sorbetti (talk) I don't see any benefit in having two pages for the same concept and same Japanese meaning.
- Okapii (talk) Arend sold me on keeping these merged, but i do think we should defer to the most recent English name.
- Pizza Master (talk) Going off the precedence set by renaming Fake/False Bowser to Impostor Bowser.
- YoYo (talk) It's the most recent name, that's the rules.
Do not split, and keep this article as "Gold Shell"[edit]
- Arend (talk) The Japanese name for the Coin Shell in Mario Kart World is Gōruden Kōra ("Golden Shell"). Compare that to the Japanese name for the Gold Shell in other iterations, Gōrudo Kōra ("Gold Shell"), and remember that the crownless Golden Mushroom has had similar Japanese name differences in Gōruden Kinoko ("Golden Mushroom") and Gōrudo Kinoko ("Gold Mushroom"). Having one name be "Gold" but another be "Golden" is too pedantic to split two items apart, as this crownless Golden Mushroom hasn't been split for these minor details, even with the fact that the Wiki hasn't been opposed to splitting golden mushrooms before in mind.
- Alternis (talk) Per Arend.
- Blinker (talk) Per Arend. I will add that Mario Portal a while back renamed a lot of color-variant enemies to follow a more consistent naming scheme, and that includes golden enemies (see Gold Bullet Bill), so that would explain the rename in Japanese.
- Sorbetti (talk) Per Arend and my comments.
Comments (Coin Shell split proposal)[edit]
@Arend: I understand your argument for keeping them merged, but what reason would there be to not rename this page to Coin Shell when that's the new name? Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 12:04, June 22, 2025 (EDT)
- More commonly used name. However, I'll also vote for the page rename option.
rend (talk) (edits) 12:24, June 22, 2025 (EDT)
- Common usage doesn't override recent in-game usage. Just ask Bomber Bill. Hewer

@Sorbetti It wouldn't be two pages for the same concept. One of them would be an article about the Gold Shell, the golden Koopa Shell with miscellaneous functions, and the other would be an article about the Coin Shell, the similar-looking Koopa Shell that produces trails of coins when thrown. jan Misali (talk · contributions) 16:44, June 22, 2025 (EDT)
- You're forgetting the Japanese name, that pretty much seals it for me. Gold and Golden aren't that different enough to warrant a split, plus other gold things like Gold Bullet Bills have also changed their behavior, now also leaving a coin trail behind them. So the only thing that might suggest a good split here is the name, but it means the same thing in Japanese so it doesn't deserve to be split for me. Finally, if this were exclusive to a series like Super Mario then I could support it, but this is now also in Mario Kart, which suggests that rather than being two different items, it's the same item but with a new mechanic. This is even more obvious once you realize that since New Super Mario Bros. 2, Gold Shells have behaved the same way. This is the only game where they're named slightly differently, so no, I'm not supporting it in any way.

- I apologize for neglecting to acknowledge the point you added to your vote after I made my comment, that one's on me. That said, what? In what way does the fact that this item appears in multiple series make it more likely that it's one singular item with multiple functions rather than multiple similar items? I feel like I must be misunderstanding something you said. jan Misali (talk · contributions) 17:15, June 22, 2025 (EDT)
- Yes, you misunderstood me. If the item has unique mechanics for a series, it does have a chance of being separated. However, the coin-dropping mechanic is present in two series, Super Mario and Mario Kart, so it's easy to assume it's the new mechanic Gold Shell has, rather than a new item.
Sorbetti
(talk) 17:25, June 22, 2025 (EDT)
- Personally I feel like the same mechanic being used for the item in more than one series is a point in favour of a split if anything, since it shows the differences between the two items are consistent. And you're incorrect in saying that every appearance of "Gold Shell" since NSMB2 has left behind coins like this, as Mario Kart Arcade GP DX came after. Hewer
(talk · contributions · edit count) 17:47, June 22, 2025 (EDT)
- What is also inconsistent is the name, since both the regular gold variant and the one that drops coins had the same name. Only the "Coin Shell" in Mario Kart World has a slightly different name in Japanese, so this, combined with my arguments above, explains my opinion. Also thanks for pointing out my mistake about the appearances after NSMB2, however it only shows me that their appearances are inconsistent and mixed. The opposite is for Watermelon (Yoshi's Island series), which has a chance of being separated again since its behavior is exclusive to one series and there is indeed benefit to covering it in another page.
