World 4-4 is the fourth and final level of World 4 in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and the sixteenth level overall in said game, taking place in a castle.

Layout[edit]

After the first pit, there is a row of ? Blocks with a long Fire Bar rotating between them and a Koopa Troopa on top; in the second to the left ? Block from the Fire Bar is a power-up. Next is a narrow hall with a Fire Bar and two Goombas (three in the remakes), followed by a room of lava with platforms above that have Fire Bars and a vertically moving lift. Within the next hall are three Koopa Troopas that will fall from the hall above and a Fire Bar in the center that the player will need to use as a platform to reach said hall above. By using a falling lift to avoid lava, the player will come to a room with Fire Bars, a Hammer Bro, Piranha Plants, Goombas, and Koopa Troopas. At the end of the top long stone platform are Hidden Blocks, the right-most of which containing a power-up; if it is a Super Mushroom, it will begin moving down the next platform, but if it is a Fire Flower, the player will be unable to collect it due to the screen locking. Upon landing near the second Piranha Plant, the Fake Bowser ahead will begin breathing fire, which the player must avoid as they jump across a moving and a stationary platform. Before the bridge with the Fake Bowser is a Lava Bubble jumping from below, with the bridge itself having a Fire Bar attached and a low pillar hanging from above.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the original version of the game, the game stops for a short time after completing this level and before World 5-1 starting. This is due to the fact that the data for Worlds 1 through 4 and Worlds 5 through 8 are stored separately in the game's memory, and the game unloads the data for up to World 4 and loads the data for World 5 onward during the brief stop.
