Help please[edit]

A little help with this article?

Hi! I'm Electrical Bowser jr.!

Could you please stop asking for help with your articles? The attitude that people will expand your stubs for you is a bad one, actually put some effort into your pages. Artwork of R.O.B. from Mario Kart DS Master R.O.B.

How about we just move this to "Cutouts" and put all of the kinds in there?--Vommack (talk) 20:11, 6 August 2012 (EDT)

I support that. Artwork of R.O.B. from Mario Kart DS Master R.O.B.
I'll wait to make sure it doesn't get deleted as a new stub before go and make a proposal about it.--Vommack (talk) 10:55, 9 August 2012 (EDT)

I don't know much about the article, okay?

Hi! I'm Electrical Bowser jr.!

Then why did you create it in the first place? And besides, can you place your signature behind your comments and not 2 lines lower? Thanks. Lakituthequick.png Lakituthequick 09:02, 8 August 2012 (EDT)

Info box[edit]

Maybe an info box should be created.

Goomboard[edit]

Would Goomboards count as a wooden cutout? Dry Bones' Emblem from Mario Kart World This is me, D-B-B! Dry Bones' Emblem from Mario Kart World 13:58, February 8, 2025 (EST)

I've added it to comparable. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:22, February 8, 2025 (EST)

Restore to the lookalikes category[edit]

Apparently the proposal Rework the "lookalikes" categories makes it so that wooden cutouts aren't lookalikes. That proposal restricted the definition of Category:Lookalikes to be "is a copy of another character". But the wooden cutouts are copies of character, with their distinguishing elements being lacking sentience, depth, functionality and being made of wood. Their entire point to existing in Super Mario 3D Land is a joke about them being flat versions of real characters and items, which is fun to distinguish from the real deal using the system's 3D features. And one of them is based on Peach, who is a character, therefore making her wooden counterpart technically also a character. Then Shadow-Play Alley in Super Mario 3D World evolves the joke by having one cast Bowser's shadow, leading to Captain Toad and the player assuming Bowser is in the course. I think the wooden cutouts can qualify as lookalikes as "character - sentience - depth - abilities + wood", in the same way the Minis are "character + toy", Dark Bowser is "Bowser + Dark Star", Super Kong is "Donkey Kong + white/blue color scheme", Dr. Mario is "Mario + practicing doctor", and Category:Paper counterparts is "character + paper". Therefore, the article wooden cutout should regain Category:Lookalikes. It should not regain Category:Bowser lookalikes, but a redirect should be made for the Japanese name for the Bowser cutout "Kuppa Kanban". And that should have Category:Bowser lookalikes.

While I don't have the experience with the source material of wooden cutout's related to make this proposal affect them, I think this would further mean Handfake regains Category:Bowser lookalikes for being able to hold a Bowser sign. I do not think this proposal would affect related subject Goomboard, on the basis of Goomba not being a character by this wiki's organization. (If non-characters could be Lookalikes, we'd have a very messy Lookalikes category with many enemy variants.) I also would not use this proposal to put vehicle parts into lookalikes categories. While they can depict characters, vehicle parts are universally non-sentient. The reason wooden cutout is getting in is that obstacles and enemies can be sentient Wooden cutouts being non-sentient versions of normally sentient things is a subversion that is part of the joke of wooden cutouts, and therefore something interesting enough to put in with the mostly sentient Lookalikes. This is also consistent with how vehicle parts are excluded from species categories even when the relevant species is the basis for a vehicle part. Sorry, 8-Bit Jumping Mario, you don't get to be a Mario lookalike.

Support: Wooden cutouts are lookalikes[edit]

  1. Salmancer (talk) I believe something does not have to be alive to utilize the tropes that define Category:Lookalikes.
  2. Hewer (talk) The whole premise of these things is that they look like characters (or species or whatever).
  3. A wooden cutout of Rykitu (talk) Per all.

Oppose: Wooden cutouts are not lookalikes[edit]

Comments (How do characters in universe fall for wooden cutouts anyway?)[edit]

Abstaining for now, but in our original dissection of the lookalike categories, we stated to remove these under the pretense that, well, you could print anything on a wooden cutout; a wooden cutout could theoretically be any character's look-alike. We'd be fine with it going in just the general Category:Lookalikes category, but it would be a bit much to start going specific and asserting these are, specifically, Bowser lookalikes or Peach lookalikes. How so? While it's true they could make anything a wooden cutout, that doesn't mean they have done so. I'm not seeing the issue here. Hewer A Hamburger in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. (talk · contributions · edit count) 17:24, June 15, 2025 (EDT)
The problem is that this isn't a hypothetical complaint; there's already two distinct cases of wooden cutouts that are modeled off of two distinct characters that have their own lookalike subcategory; namely, Bowser and Princess Peach. It feels a bit redundant to put this in two distinct subcategories when really, only one (the base Lookalike category) would do the trick. I'm still not really getting how this being in multiple lookalike categories because it fits in multiple lookalike categories is a problem in any way. Hewer A Hamburger in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. (talk · contributions · edit count) 20:08, June 15, 2025 (EDT)
This seems to be a problem born of a misunderstanding. The only thing gaining Category:Bowser lookalikes directly by this proposal is "Kuppa Kanban", the name of the cutout based on Bowser in Super Mario 3D World. Mostly so that the category has an accurate count of the number of subjects that are like Bowser. Salmancer (talk) 14:21, June 16, 2025 (EDT)
