Shouldn't soundtrack pages go on their respective game articles?Knife (talk) 00:20, 10 August 2007 (EDT)

Not if they're sold separately. SaltyTalk! 00:39, 10 August 2007 (EDT)

Proposal: Reorganize this category[edit]

Previously, I made a TPP to merge Category:Musical themes and Category:Songs. I canceled it because I realized instead I wanted to make this larger-scope proposal instead. Actually, it even has supplementary proposals 1 and 2, covering separate issues that don't have a reason to be bundled in with this one.

This category... it's a bit of a mess, without a clear purpose. It divides vocal and non-vocal music for no clear reason and has many things that are only music-related listed on it, only some of which are actually part of the category proper.

My guiding philosophy for this proposal is that I think this category should be our category for music or collections thereof. Other things, like musical groups or instruments or music-related collectibles, will not be included in the category.

As such, I'd like to make the following changes:

  • None of the things linked to at the top of the article will remain there, as the only one there that would be within the category's new scope is the list of albums, which is already covered by the "Albums" category.
  • The three pages under the Music category (List of references in music, Paah, and Record (WarioWare: D.I.Y.) currently will be removed, as they are merely music-related and not actually music themselves.
  • The current content of the "Musical themes" and "Songs" categories will be merged and placed under the main Music category.

Would it be a good idea to also have categories for instrumental music, themes or songs, as well as vocal music/themes/songs? I can see someone wanting to differentiate the Super Mario Bros. Ground theme, a completely instrumental track, from songs with vocals and lyrics like DK Rap or Jump Up, Super Star. ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 19:37, July 27, 2023 (EDT)

It seems kind of like an arbitrary thing to differentiate by. You'd be surprised by how fuzzy the line can be, too: DDR: Mario Mix alone has Always Smiling, a song with lyrics that aren't officially known; Hammer Dance, a song with constant vocal interjections but no real lyrics; and Pipe Pop, a song with a rap break that is completely unintelligible and probably on purpose. Ahemtoday (talk) 21:27, July 27, 2023 (EDT)
If the lyrics of Always Smiling can be heard and transcribed, then I don't understand why the lyrics "not being officially known" is an issue. Even if there's a rule that all song transcriptions have to be officially released, Always Smiling is still clearly a vocal song with lyrics. I do agree that the other two songs are a bit more blurry, but I suppose that Pipe Pop still could count as a Vocal song despite the unintelligibility, same goes for Hammer Dance despite only having interjections (wonder if that is a form of sampling?)
All in all, I don't really see why the two categories need to be merged, when renaming the categories to something like Category:Instrumental themes and Category:Vocal songs, and/or Category:Lyrical songs if necessary (could replace "themes" and "songs" with each other or "music") is just as viable of a solution, and your objections against keeping them split sounds like you're overthinking the issue. It's basically like the general opposition of your prior cancelled proposal says. ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 13:18, August 2, 2023 (EDT)
It seemed to me that the biggest objection to that TPP, at least regarding the actual merging plan, was that we would be calling music without vocals "songs" when songs, by dictionary definition, have vocals. That's why I'm merging to "Music" in this one.
Anyway, I think with this sort of thing, it's not whether an action needs to be taken, but rather whether the end result of taking it makes more sense than not. In this case, I think it does; I maintain that splitting the series' music across two categories based on whether or not they have known lyrics and/or a human voice isn't ideal. It's not so bad with pretty distinct sets of music like the WarioWare songs, but when most of DDR Mario Mix's music is in one category but Bowser's Castle (song) isn't because it has a voice saying "DDR" at a couple points, I feel like it makes more sense without the distinction than with. I'm undecided on the proposal itself, but I would disagree that Paah does not belong in the musical category as it is arguably a short musical phrase in its own right (as part of a song). It does feel a little awkward for it to remain in the main category as it is, though. Pseudo (talk) 20:07, July 27, 2023 (EDT)

And as the proposal states, the new category is for music, not music-related things. The better-fitting game mechanics category for paah works fine. Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 21:07, July 27, 2023 (EDT)
