Filename[edit]

Maybe we should go for a filename for this article, since that's better than a fan-name. The exact file that this Toad's sprites are in is called KNP_Surfing.Blue.bfres.lz. Every enemy and character in the game has a usually 3-character abbreviation (MAR for Mario, PCH for Peach, HEI for Shy Guy, SNB for Pokey, etc.), and the Surfing and Blue are to distinguish it from other Toads in the same directory. So it'd be called either "Surfing Blue Kinopio" or "Blue Surfing Kinopio." Would people be okay with renaming this article? Scrooge200 (talk) PMCS Mustard Cafe Sign.png 23:26, January 23, 2020 (EST)

What color was KNP_Surfing.bfres.lz supposed to be, and does KNP_Surfing.Blue.bfres.lz include the icon? Otherwise my preference is the "Surfing Blue Kinopio", with "Blue Surfing Kinopio" as a redirect. LinkTheLefty (talk) 07:26, January 24, 2020 (EST)
KNP_Surfing.bfres.lz is just the model that the textures are applied to, it doesn't have a color. As there are no other surfing Toads in the game, I think "Surfing Blue" is kinda redundant and would prefer just "Surfing," but eh, I guess we have to go with it. The icon is not in the KNP_Surfing.Blue.bfres.lz file and I would assume that it's with the graphics of the world map. Scrooge200 (talk) PMCS Mustard Cafe Sign.png 14:25, January 24, 2020 (EST)
Well if it is only used for one object in the game, and "Blue" is essentially just the palette, why not "Surfing Kinopio"? LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:22, January 24, 2020 (EST)
Yep, I'd like to go with that. All in favor of moving? Scrooge200 (talk) PMCS Mustard Cafe Sign.png 21:47, January 24, 2020 (EST)
Sounds good to me. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:49, January 24, 2020 (EST)

Hey so what was Surfing Kinopio called on the Mario Wiki originally before renaming him? I would like to know, Thanks! Shadic 34 (talk) 11:14, January 19, 2022 (EST)

It was just "Blue Chosen Toad", you can see it on the page history. Somethingone (talk) 11:21, January 19, 2022 (EST)
I was working on the page for Prisma Times and found that it refers to this character as "Shipwrecked Toad."' I doubt it's meant to be his 'proper' name, but it's currently the closest thing he has to an in-game name, and likely a higher priority source than his internal filename. Should this page be moved? 108.208.40.205 12:10, November 24, 2025 (EST)
I think so! LinkTheLefty (talk) 15:48, November 24, 2025 (EST)

Rename to Shipwrecked Toad[edit]

Rename to Shipwrecked Toad 8-0
See the above conversation. In short, Prisma Times refers to this guy as "Shipwrecked Toad", which we can only assume wasn't chosen either because it's relatively remote dialogue, because it was assumed to be a descriptor, or both. Granted, a name being a part of a descriptor hasn't exactly stopped other page names before, and it is, at the very least, more accessible than the dev-derived name, giving it more credit in terms of using it for the page title.

Support (LAND HO!)[edit]

  1. Camwoodstock (talk) Per proposal.
  2. Captain Tails777 (talk) A descriptive name from in game is better than nothing, honestly. And looking at many other names in Color Splash (if you could call them that), it's not like the game hasn't already been giving Toads generic, descriptive names (Tangerino Grill Chef, Barista Toad, Lighthouse keeper). So that be an "Arr! Per proposal" from me, captain!
  3. LinkTheLefty (talk) Descriptive enough and fits along the lines of the "Justice Toad" and "Mountain Sage" Chosen Toads.
  4. Shipwrecked Altendo (talk) I don't really like how the name "Shipwrecked" is used here, as it could just refer to the state of the Toad when Prisma Times reported the news. That said, it does feel like the most official name for this subject, as it it actually shown in-game, although I do also think that "Surfing Toad" would work just as well, given how this current name was got from a three-letter code for the Japanese word for Toad.
  5. Captain Rykitu (talk) Per all.
  6. Martendo (talk) Per all.
  7. PrincessPeachFan (talk): Per all.
  8. Power Flotzo (talk) Per the others.

Comments (Some odd joke combination of surfer dude culture and pirates here)[edit]

@Camwoodstock: By the way, your linked example of Poison needle has a move template to "floor with poison needles". PrincessPeachFan (talk) 08:56, November 25, 2025 (EST)

That doesn't really contradict the point being made. Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 06:43, November 27, 2025 (EST)
