Support[edit]

  1. LadySophie17 (talk) The article has a robust gameplay section, featuring tables of all relevant game objects in accordance to modern guidelines on article structure and table design. I have rewritten the entire "staff" and "development" sections by chasing after various staff interviews in order to have everything properly sourced. In those sections, I aimed to detail where the main components of Super Mario Bros. came from, or who was responsible for them. The "pre-release and unused content" section was also rewritten, to focus on cut content from Super Mario Bros. that influenced future games, which I believe to be the most important aspect that should be covered here. "Reception and legacy" is still fairly small, and I'm looking to expand it, but I believe it is sufficient enough as is, and has citations for every award mentioned. Notably, I expanded the multimedia into a full "soundtrack" section, where I went over the most iconic/reoccuring tracks from the game, as well as the albums with the game's music. Both of them being important aspects to highlight. Almost all citation issues have been resolved thanks to the help of many other editors. While I will still try to find the last remaining citation, I don't think it is a problem for the page.

Oppose[edit]

  1. Xiahou Ba, The Nasty Warrior (talk) Sorry, I have to leave an oppose. See my comment below.

#The Real Color Splash Fan (talk) The biggest problem about this article is the "References in other media" section, which is lacking many references. The missing references more or less fit into two categories: Media released after Super Mario Bros. Wonder, such as Hello, Mario!/Hello, Yoshi! and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Non-Mario Nintendo media, such as the Animal Crossing and Pikmin series. Other than that, the article looks great.

Comments[edit]

Potential issues: Glitches are not my wheelhouse, so I am not sure I gave that section the quality it should have. But it looks good to me, at least. I am aware the "regional differences" section is literally one sentence long, but I could not find anything substantial to talk about. The localization of the game to English seems fairly straightforward, and I don't think listing the localized character names here would benefit the game at all. There might be something to be said about NES games running at 50 Hz in Europe vs 60 Hz in the US, but it's not really a Super Mario Bros.-specific thing. So I left the section as it was. — Lady Sophie_17 Wiggler Sophie.png(T|C) 21:24, July 1, 2026 (UTC)

@The Real Color Splash Fan I will see what I can do about references in Super Mario content post Super Mario Bros. Wonder. On that note, you reminded me that, per our guidelines at MarioWiki:References § References to other games and references in later games, we should only include "references made to the game in later Super Mario games" specifically. This is because there is a nigh uncountable amount of games out there, and even just considering Nintendo games, it would make the section incredibly bloated, making it harder to find the Super Mario references to Super Mario games, especially with a game as influential as Super Mario Bros. Besides, we already have dedicated articles such as List of references in Nintendo video games and the crossover articles such as Crossovers with Pikmin that keep track of those. — Lady Sophie_17 Wiggler Sophie.png(T|C) 16:11, July 2, 2026 (UTC)

Oh, and I am not entirely sure on how this rule affects references from non-Super Mario games which already have articles in the wiki, such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so I chose to keep them for now. — Lady Sophie_17 Wiggler Sophie.png(T|C) 16:16, July 2, 2026 (UTC)
  1. The second paragraph describing enemy behavior in the Gameplay section should be moved to the enemies section.
  2. The basic mechanic of a more powerful item replacing the less powerful one (the Fire Flower replacing Super Mushrooms if Mario is Super Mario) should be noted).
  3. If I recall correctly, the game doesn't scroll back once you progress through the level, that should be noted.
  4. How does level progression work? Can you replay levels you already cleared?
  5. Post damage invincibility frames after you get hit could be mentioned (also could apply to Mario platformers in general).
  6. The second quest elaboration is unnecessary for the primary Gameplay section, just remove those and save that for the Hard mode section two sections down.
  7. Hard mode doesn't need to mention the story is the same and that Peach still needs to be rescued. The entire last paragraph is unnecessary, except the sentence that tells readers nothing is unlocked if cleared.
  8. The article mentions "amiibo tap: Nintendo's Greatest Bits", which left me confused why it's there. Without any elaboration to what it is, I was forced to click the link to learn it was just a trial version of the game.
  9. The Worlds and Levels should explain exactly the differences between "Ground", "Underground", "Athletic", "Castle", and "Underwater" biomes. This is also where how the second Gameplay paragraph that lumps Mario being able to swim underwater mixed in with the enemy lists (that entire paragraph should be redone and moved to the enemies section mostly) talked about here.
  10. Enemies could use an expansion like Super Mario World: should discuss general information like how common some enemies are, how most of them are based off turtles, etc. Should also warrant a mention how the table lists only exceptions to being defeated ie being immune to stomps or Fireballs, perhaps say they respawn after Mario exits a pipe.
  11. Enemies being referred to as "the bad guys" in text should be sourced.
  12. Any explanation to why the friendly characters get colored backgrounds but the enemies get stuck with no color?
  13. Lava isn't really an obstacle in this game as much as it is a glorified pit. Pits should be listed as an obstacle somewhere.
  14. Items can use a small blurb, again similar to Super Mario World.
  15. The Regional Differences section is extremely sparse, containing only one, when there are much more than that
  16. The article has a statement saying "As of 2004, Super Mario Bros. sold 40.24 million units with its original release,[70] being the second best-selling Super Mario game". When I read the term "Super Mario" series, I see it from the specific platformer lens, not including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
  17. Honestly, the entire Reception and Legacy section really needs much more expansion and better formatting (the first sentence should be sourced too). Wikipedia has a much more fruitful section than we do, which talks about the game's influence in later Mario titles (especially with all the anniversary celebrations, which additionally cite this game rather than Donkey Kong as the true start of the Mario franchise) game's status as a collectors item as well as influencing many games, especially Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as talking about its general permeation into pop culture. There are endless sources you can find that talk about the game in this light, so I think we should reflect that better here.
    1. Plus there is no aggregate reception. At all. There are no critic reviews of the game. It's a bit difficult to cite the game's aggregate score because it was released before Metacritic got conceived, but Wikipedia does list what you could use as well as retrospective reviews of it, including what Metacritic does have at the moment with 14 reviews. and we do have the GameRankings score before it was merged to Metacritic.
  18. Soundtrack should be honestly moved farther up in the article, at least before development and reception/legacy/references sections. It's a component of the game as much as worlds and levels, and thus should be listed before external information. Even so, it should be retooled to talk about the game's soundtrack in general rather than just a physical release of a CD.

Anyway a lot of these are not really big issues because this is a pretty good article otherwise, but they do keep me from supporting the article as is. BabyLuigiFire.pngXiahou Ba(the Nasty Warrior) 17:03, July 2, 2026 (UTC)

I'm not planning on voting yet, however I've decided to address some of these points and a bit more. (Specifically, points 3, 4, 7, 11 and the last one have been addressed, though I might have pushed the Soundtrack section too high up.) SuperGamer18 (talk) 18:34, July 2, 2026 (UTC)
Thank you for the detailed review of the article. Having an itemized list like this really helps me with knowing what needs to be addressed. I have already addressed points 1, 2, 6 and 12 (though at a later point I might go back and add colored backgrounds for every enemy due to Peach and Toad needing them). Also thank you for the links shared, I'll be sure to reference them in the future. — Lady Sophie_17 Wiggler Sophie.png(T|C) 20:13, July 2, 2026 (UTC)
Might be better to enumerate the points, like "point 12" would involve my literal counting each bullet point lol. Sprite of Mario's icon in Mario Party DS It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 02:43, July 3, 2026 (UTC)
I enumerated them in my notes, but maybe I can ask @Xiahou Ba, The Nasty Warrior to add them to her message for easy reference. — Lady Sophie_17 Wiggler Sophie.png(T|C) 02:58, July 3, 2026 (UTC)
Oh, thank you for adding them! — Lady Sophie_17 Wiggler Sophie.png(T|C) 03:02, July 3, 2026 (UTC)
I've added some of the anniversary bits per point 17, but I wouldn't consider that part fully addressed yet. Sprite of Mario's icon in Mario Party DS It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 03:28, July 3, 2026 (UTC)
