This article is under construction. Therefore, please excuse its informal appearance while it is being worked on. We hope to have it completed as soon as possible.
This is a list of all items that appear in the Mario Kart series.
Main games[edit]
| Item | Description | Appearances |
|---|---|---|
Dash Mushroom |
Gives the user a short burst of speed. This also allows them to take offroad shortcuts. | Super Mario Kart |
Green Shell |
||
Red Shell |
||
Banana Peel |
Can be placed on the ground behind or thrown far in front of the user. A driver who comes in touch with it spins out. | |
Star |
Makes the user temporarily invincible and invulnerable to items and some hazards. Any driver that comes in contact with the user will be knocked over. In this state, top speed is increased, and off-road no longer slowes down. | |
Lightning |
Shocks all drivers except the user with lightning strikes. Drivers affected lose their items and speed, and get shrunk down for a short period of time, reducing their top speed and leaving them vulnerable to flattening.
In Mario Kart World, only the drivers in front of the user get hit. | |
Spiny Shell |
Homes in on the driver in first place, knocking them over with a blue explosion. On its way, any driver who come in contact with it will be knocked over as well. If the driver affected uses an item which makes them invincible, the effect is nullified.
From Mario Kart: Double Dash!! onward, the item can be dodged with a well timed Dash Mushroom. From Mario Kart 8 onward, the Super Horn item can be used to block it. In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii, the item has wings, flying over any drivers that aren't in first. |
Mario Kart 64 |
Triple Mushrooms |
Gives the user three Dash Mushrooms.
From Mario Kart 8 onward, the mushrooms orbit the kart, allowing other drivers to also gain a small boost by bumping into the user (this does not use up the mushrooms). | |
Triple Green Shells |
Gives the user three Green Shells which orbit the kart. Any driver that bumbs into the user will flip over, destroying the shell.
In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, the item can only be used by Koopa Troopa and Paratroopa, and the shells don't orbit the kart, instead being juggled by the driver who obtained the item. | |
Triple Red Shells |
Gives the user three Red Shells which orbit the kart. Any driver that bumbs into the user will flip over, destroying the shell.
In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, the item can only be used by Koopa and Paratroopa, and the shells don't orbit the kart, instead being juggled by the driver who obtained the item. |
Mario Kart 64 |
Golden Dash Mushroom |
Gives the user unlimited Dash Mushroom uses for a short period of time. Once the item gets used, the timer starts, regardless if the user continues boosting or not.
In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, this item can only be used by Toad and Toadette. |
Mario Kart 64 |
Bob-omb |
Can be thrown in front of or behind the user. Once it hits the ground, it starts ticking down before exploding shortly after. Drivers that come in contact with the explosion will be knocked over, or spin out, depending on the distance to the Bob-omb.
In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, this item can only be used by Wario and Waluigi. In Mario Kart World, when thrown forward, the Bob-bomb will roll on the ground before halting. |
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! |
Bullet Bill |
Turns the user into a Bullet Bill for a short period of time, which will dash forward along the track, knocking over any drivers who come in contact. In this state, the user is invulnerable to items and hazards.
In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, the Chain Chomp item serves a similar purpose. |
Mario Kart DS |
Blooper |
Upon use, all drivers infront of the user have a Blooper appear, which sprays ink across their screens, impairing their view for a short period of time. If an affected driver uses a boost item or drives across a Dash Panel, they can wipe away the ink faster.
In Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart World, using the Boo item will also negate the Bloopers effects. In Mario Kart 8, if an affected driver has a Piranha Plant item, it will eat the Blooper before it can spray ink. Additionaly, Blooper ink can now be washed off by entering water. In Mario Kart Tour, the ink can also be removed by wiping across the screen. In Mario Kart DS, computer drivers affected by the item will slow down and swerve from left to right. From Mario Kart 8 onward, the controls of affected drivers become more slippery as well. | |
Boo |
Will steal an item from another driver. While active, the user becomes permeable, making them invulnerable to items and some hazards.
In all games except Mario Kart World, the item also makes the user invisible to other drivers, including on the bottom screen in Mario Kart DS. In all games except Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, off-road no longer slowes down when using the item. In Super Mario Kart, the item is only available in 2-Player mode. In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, upon use, the boo will slow down the driver in 1st place and make them drop coins. |
Super Mario Kart |
Triple Bananas |
Gives the user three bananas.
Until Mario Kart 8, the item would hang behind the user, with all three bananas in a straight line. From Mario Kart 8 onwards, the bananas orbit the user, similar to Triple Green Shells. In Mario Kart 64, the Banana Bunch item serves a similar purpose. |
Mario Kart DS |
Coin |
Gives the user two extra coins. The more coins the user has collected, the more their top speed increases. | Super Mario Kart |
Feather |
Makes the user jump high into the air, allowing them to leap over obstacles and other drivers, and to dodge other items.
In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the feather exclusively appears in Battle mode, where the user can steal balloons, coins and the Shine Sprite from other drivers by jumping over them. In Mario Kart World, when timed correctly, players can perform a trick in mid-air, giving them a small boost upon landing. |
Super Mario Kart |
Fire Flower |
Allows the user to shoot fireballs infront or behind them for a short period of time. Drivers who come in touch with a fireball will spin out.
In Mario Kart Tour, three fireballs orbit the user, spinning out drivers who bumb into them. The user can also throw fireballs in bursts of three. In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, the Fireball item servers a similar purpose. |
Mario Kart 7 |
Boomerang Flower |
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | |
Super Horn |
||
Fake Item Box |
Can be placed behind or thrown far in front of the user. Drivers who come in contact with it will flip over.
In Mario Kart DS, the item appears differently on the bottom map, making it more easily discernible. |
Mario Kart 64 |
Mega Mushroom |
Mario Kart Wii | |
Yoshi's Egg |
Super Mario Kart | |
Birdo's Egg |
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! | |
Heart |
||
Giant Banana |
||
Bowser's Shell |
||
Fireball |
Can be thrown in front of or behind the user. Any drivers who come in contact with it will spin out.
In Super Mario Kart, a single fireball will lie on the track, slowly moving around. Only Bowser controlled by a computer driver can use it. In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, upon use, five fireballs will bounce across the track, ricocheting off walls before vanishing. Only Mario and Luigi can use the item. When Luigi obtains it, the fireballs are colored green, but behave identical. In Mario Kart 7, the Fire Flower item serves a similar purpose. |
Super Mario Kart |
Ice Flower |
Allows the user to shoot iceballs in front or behind them for a short period of time. In both of it's appearances, the item mimics the mechanics of the Fire Flower in the same game.
In Mario Kart Tour, three iceballs orbit the user, freezing any driver who bumps into them. The user can also throw iceballs in bursts of three. Drivers who come in contact with them will freeze, sliding into the direction they where going while not being able to move. In Mario Kart World, iceballs are thrown one after another in a straight line, only spinning out players they come in contact with instead of freezing them. |
