I'm unsure what category to put this page in, maybe characters and allies? Also should Banana Birds be counted as Animal Buddies? -- Sir Grodus

Maybe Category:Terms would do? And yes I would consider Banana Birds animal buddies because Animal Buddies are Animal Buddies or Animal Allies and don't even have to be playable to be considered one.--Knife, the guy who just asks questions, but does nothing on the wiki 00:10, 8 December 2006 (EST)

Banana Birds are not animal buddies. Banana Birds are collectibles that don't help in the actual levels. -- Son of Suns

I could maybe include them in the "Others" section, as they do aid you at the end of the game and you can ride them. -- Sir Grodus

When do you ride Banana Birds?!?!? -- Son of Suns

If you get the games "best" ending the Banana Birds will pick you up and take you to the Banana Bird Queens lair. -- Sir grodus

You must remember, Animal Buddies don't just have to help, they can be damsels too so it is an animal buddy. Since I'm here, want me to create a Template for you?--Knife, the guy who just asks questions, but does nothing on the wiki 23:26, 12 December 2006 (EST)

Maybe, it could probably be seperated into three sections: rideable, unrideable and other. -- Sir Grodus

Nah maybe I'll separate it into just Rideable and Other. Other and Unrideable are pretty much the same thing.--Knife, the guy who just asks questions, but does nothing on the wiki 23:32, 15 December 2006 (EST)

Jungle BuddiesEdit

DK Jungle Beat refers to Animal Buddies as Jungle Buddies.  Paper Jorge (Talk·Contribs)

This could be mentioned in the article and a redirect could be made. -- Sir Grodus

So no move? I thought that we moved pages to their latest names.  Paper Jorge (Talk·Contribs)

Well, the term "Animal Buddy" is still widely used and has been used in at least a dozen games, while "Jungle Buddies" has so far only been used once, we could make a redirect and maybe have an "also known as Jungle Buddies thing" in the opening paragraph. -- Sir Grodus

TemplateEdit

Shoudn't there be an template for animal buddies?Mr. Guy the Guy  Who's asking this for no reasonE

NameEdit

Shouldn't the article titles have their full name, such as Salvo the Slime?  Plumber  16:11, 1 September 2007 (EDT)

Ghost RopeEdit

I think we should take the ghost rope off the list of possible animal buddies. First, it's not an animal or character, it's just an object with a face that makes sounds. Second, a lot of them appear on the same level and third, the ghost barrels are technically the same thing yet they are not in the list.  Supermariofan14

I agree. It's just some rope that regularly disappears to make the level more difficult, not a "buddy" in any way. --Grandy02 14:42, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Something I've always wonderedEdit

Why are the animal friends' article names "X the Y" instead of just "X"? RickTommy (talk) 16:36, January 21, 2020 (EST)

I agree that they should just be single names, since in-game text in Donkey Kong Country indicates that they should be read lowercase (i.e. "Rambi the rhino", "Enguarde the swordfish" and "Expresso the ostrich") and the species only get capitalized in some manuals because of headers. LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:40, January 21, 2020 (EST)
Additionally, Nintendo Power seems to support this, such as in the Volume 65 preview (page 19) and their Donkey Kong Country 2 guide. LinkTheLefty (talk) 10:56, June 30, 2020 (EDT)
I used to always call them by the "X the Y", but LTL raises a good point. I'm in support of this change Results May Vary (talk) 20:43, August 21, 2020 (EDT)

TawksEdit

Tawks is currently listed on this page, but I don't remember him ever being described as an "animal friend" (in the same way Rambi is, anyway). -- KOOPA CON CARNE 22:27, January 6, 2023 (EST)

That's a good point, actually. I imagine if it's listed anywhere, it's got to be on the official Tropical Freeze website, but for some reason it won't load all the way for me. But on the topic of not being described as an animal friend anywhere, what's the Lightfish doing on here? In the source linked for its name, it's not only never claimed to be an animal friend, but it's also described as a generic species. DrippingYellow (talk) 14:50, December 5, 2023 (EST)
The German guide that gave it Glimmer-like artwork lists it as an animal friendMedia:German glimmer.jpg, so there's that... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:29, December 16, 2023 (EST)

Jungle Buddies: RevisitedEdit

Is there a reason that the Jungle Buddies in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat are considered Animal Friends other than the fact that they are similar gameplay-wise? This article treats the term "Jungle Buddies" as synonymous with Animal Friends, but as far as I know, none of the non-Jungle Beat Animal Friends have ever been referred to as Jungle Buddies, and none of the Jungle Buddies have ever been called Animal Friends. There's even an exclusive Japanese term for the "Animal Friends" in Jungle Beat, ジャングルブラザーズ (or, Jungle Brothers). The Jungle Buddies seem to me like an entirely different group of characters. Split Jungle Buddies from Animal FriendsEdit

This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit any of the sections in the proposal. If you wish to discuss the article, do so in a new header below the proposal.

Okay, so... nobody responded to my above talk page topic, and since I have yet to hear any reason that the Jungle Buddies and Animal Friends are one and the same, I've made this proposal. To restate my points:

The term "Jungle Buddy" seems to have been used exclusively for the animal mounts in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (Hoofer, Flurl, Orco, and Helibird). The Jungle Buddies have never been referred to as "Animal Friends" to my knowledge, and none of the Animal Friends have ever been called "Jungle Buddies". As a result, although they serve a somewhat similar function to Animal Friends, it would seem that the Jungle Buddies are an entirely separate group of friendly animals. The original Japanese name hammers this point home further, distinctly referring to them as ジャングルブラザーズ (lit. "Jungle Brothers").

Due to the apparent lack of overlap between the Animal Friends and the Jungle Buddies, I propose that we split them, either into their own article or into a sub-section of this article.

Split Jungle Buddies into their own list in the same articleEdit

CommentsEdit

One question: Since the Helper Monkeys also only appear in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, would their coverage be moved to the Jungle Buddies article, stay on the Animal Friends article, or be removed altogether from either article? That clarification probably warrants a separate proposal, considering the date this proposal was made.   ThePowerPlayer 17:33, December 17, 2023 (EST)

Funny you mention that, there's actually no proof that I'm aware of that the Helper Monkeys are Animal Friends/Jungle Buddies. They're not listed with the Jungle Buddies in any material I've seen, and are mentioned separately in the manual. They'd probably have to be moved to Jungle Buddies in the meantime while we sort that out, though. DrippingYellow (talk) 15:09, December 20, 2023 (EST)
I feel like it would be fine to take them out of the article right away if it's an uncontroversial, relatively minor change backed by an official source. Hewer   (talk · contributions · edit count) 14:33, December 21, 2023 (EST)
Japanese guides basically list them as interactive objects. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:35, December 22, 2023 (EST)
