In my opinion there aren't always the same rivals: if you play more Versus round with the same characters (like Lakitu), you can see how the rivals changes: sometimes Waluigi was the rival, sometimes it was Rosalina, sometimes Pink Gold Peach... we should remove that section, it's false! There aren't rivals
I know this was touched on before and was left unresolved, but after some extensive play time i can confirm there isn't any rival order or rivals as a matter of fact as the information on the page doesn't match and none of the characters positions in a cup stay the same for 2 or more races. Also most of the time the rival listed doesn't appear, mainly meaning there aren't select characters that'll always appear. Unless someone can provide definite evidence rivals exist, could we get rid of the false information on the page. Cubeguy(talk)

New information: Unlockables
I have a bit of information I just discovered. But, seeing as I'm not "experienced" enough on SMWiki, I can't add to the article. Whoever can, please feel free to add this in my stead.
In the article, it says something along the lines of "Mii is always unlocked by getting gold in every cup in a class, like in Mario Kart 7." I've discovered that in addition to this, s/he can be unlocked by random like each of the other characters, in addition to the "every cup" method.
