While many official strategy guides exist for games in the greater Mario series from a number of publishers, several unauthorized strategy guides from major publishers exist. These guides often utilize original research and conjectural information, possibly resulting in inaccuracies. Many guides also utilized original artwork that did not display a full character while invoking the idea of the character or game in order to skirt around copyrights.

- Prima's Unauthorized Game Secrets for Yoshi's Story refers to Baby Bowser as "Bowser Jr.", four years before the debut of the actual character of the same name.
