Do we necessarily need all the assets related to non-Mario games here? --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 13:17, September 12, 2022 (EDT)

It's virtually a Super Smash Bros.-type situation where Mario elements co-exist with non-Mario elements, being neither central to the activity nor a mere "guest appearance" of sorts; the implication being that every aspect of this subject warrants coverage here in some form. In effect, much of Play Nintendo's material, such as this quiz and this set of greeting cards, is covered in this way, and to selectively omit or remove the non-Mario parts would only hinder thorough documentation. Consider also that other NIWA wikis don't appear to document any relevant parts as of now. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 16:02, September 12, 2022 (EDT) EDIT: Struck out the last argument since I no longer entertain it in any capacity--how other wikis do their shtuff isn't this site's problem. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 11:28, May 20, 2023 (EDT)

Okay[edit]

Remove the non-Super Mario games' rows from the Trophy Decorations table[edit]

Brown Block This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit this section or its subsections. If you wish to discuss the article, please do so in a new section below the proposal.

While we've been combing through every table to bring them up to standards, we came across this particular article. Roughly half the rows on the giant Trophy decorations table that exists in lieu of a gallery are... For games that aren't even related to the Super Mario franchise. The first game-specific row on the table is for Splatoon 3 and it doesn't let up from there. We saw the old discussion from above, and to be honest, we don't really buy it.

  • "It's a Super Smash Bros.-type situation" only makes sense if this is how we covered every "crossover with Mario in it where he's not the focus, but one of many in a crowd" like this. We... Extremely don't. Art Style: PiCTOBiTS, Tetris DS, Tetris 99, heck, even Nintendo Week if you want to swing it that way, are far more comparable.
  • "Removing the non-Mario parts would only hinder thorough documentation" isn't... Really the case, with how we generally consider things "thorough"? We don't exactly make pages fully documenting Densetsu no Starfy 3 for the sake of "being thorough", and moreover, thorough doesn't immediately make for necessary, or even helpful. We have Not An Archive for many reasons, and this is one of them; being "thorough" with rows of 20-or-so images for Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain and ARMS is, indeed, thorough, but it obfuscates the part that someone viewing this page probably actually cares about; the parts about the Super Mario franchise.
  • To be honest, "this is how other Play Nintendo things are covered" also doesn't do much for us. Most of those involve like, a single trivia question, or one or two images for another game. Here, as it stands, this page is primarily taken up by non-Super Mario game stuff. Even amongst that crowd, this sticks out like a sore thumb considering only 7 of these games count for our coverage, with 2 rows dedicated to consoles and 5 entire rows dedicated to stuff we don't even bother covering otherwise. 1/7th of this table is Splatoon right now.

We're not here to tell people what exactly they can and cannot document, because that's, frankly, a little stupid. It's much easier to document a web applet than a full game anyways, we can't blame people for how they opt to spend one afternoon versus how they spend a few weeks at minimum... But like, we need to clarify scopes for this stuff so we don't go insane covering entire web browser applets where Mario's presence boils down to a few options out of many. The bulk of this would be more fit for something like NWiki than our own site.

What we want is straightforward. Remove the rows for Splatoon 3, Nintendo Switch Sports, Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain, Splatoon 2, and ARMS. We're a little skeptical of if the consoles should be kept as well, but those are at least far less outrageous than something like Nintendo Switch Sports is; we'll keep those for now, but if there's enough demand, we could add an option to cull those as well.

Remove (the crowd goes mild...)[edit]

  1. Camwoodstock (talk) Per proposal. This would only particularly make sense if we were far more rigorous with all of our crossover coverage, which is demonstrably not the case.
  2. Illuminoid (talk) This extra information is far more suited to be covered by the other NIWA wikis. The system decorations can stay here, though; this wiki has articles on them.
  3. Wilben (talk) Per all.
  4. Rykitu (talk) Per all.
  5. The Dab Creator (talk) Per all.
  6. Sorbetti (talk) Per all.
  7. ThePowerPlayer (talk) Per all.

Comments (the committee has spoken)[edit]

Would you say that the current coverage of The Play Nintendo Show is reasonable? B700465189a9 (talk) 02:28, June 6, 2026 (UTC)

That's not comparable at all. That show uses Mario characters; Izzy, in its episodes, unlike the other things in this page. Sorbetti Mr. Sorbetti (talk) 02:31, June 6, 2026 (UTC)
The mere presence of Izzy being an actual character tied with the Super Mario franchise gives that one a far more defensible spot. Nintendo Week, in contrast, doesn't have any recurring Mario-related stuff aside from the set itself, which isn't a character. Based on the coverage policy, Trophy Creator is a crossover game. All of the game's information, even if it doesn't pertain to the Super Mario franchise, is wrapped neatly within its article. Several other articles like those for Nintendo Special Big Band and Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo format non-Super Mario details similarly. I don't think we should remove a few table rows, sacrificing the comprehensiveness of the article, to hold ourselves to an impossible standard of perfect non-Super Mario non-coverage.
While covering Izzy makes sense, the coverage of The Play Nintendo Show has quickly sprouted into a case study of nearly every writing guideline written as "what not to do." The Play Nintendo Show seems to also be crossover media, so its non-Super Mario subjects should be confined to the main article. What we have now is a branching series of articles and links to articles that might never be written, including those for:
The Izzy article, which should be the article that this wiki focuses on improving, seems to be woefully incomplete in comparison. The Play Nintendo Show coverage reflects badly on the overall quality of the wiki; listing every Trophy Creator theme does not. I think that we instead pare down the type of coverage that leads to low-quality articles. B700465189a9 (talk) 05:18, June 6, 2026 (UTC)
Writer for The Play Nintendo Show articles here. I agree with Sorbetti and Camwoodstock's responses. What we are covering is the live-action segments because there is enough Super Mario content in them. We are being as brief as possible on the games they are reviewing, and a lot of the times the segments don't relate to the game at all. Also, "poorly written"? I'm all up for criticism, I get people notice mistakes and fix them a little while after the article is created, and from now on I want to check for mistakes in my articles more, but saying that it started a "case study of nearly every writing guideline written as "what not to do."" sounds a little extreme. I avoid everything on that list. Sprite of Lakitu from Super Mario Bros.RykituSprite of Lakitu from Super Mario Bros. 12:50 PM June 6, 2026

@Koopa con Carne Would you like to weigh any thoughts on this? You initially created the article, so it's fair if you at least were aware of this proposal. Sprite of Mario's icon in Mario Party DS It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 02:59, June 6, 2026 (UTC)

Hey, I don't feel strongly about the article one way or another, so I'll be fine with whatever the majority vote shapes up to be. For a more involved and candid answer, I'm honestly torn on the subject. The concerns in the proposal make sense--but we could argue the app's visual branding denotes that it is a Mario franchise product with non-Mario elements in it, what with Mario characters being its figureheads on the title screen and in thumbnails. Similar cases on the wiki include something like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, whose crossover elements, such as Snowboy, Deku Baba, and cash, are covered discretely in relation to that game. Either way, I think there's definitely some leeway we can give to the console-centric, non-Mario content in this app. That should stay.
As for The Play Nintendo Show, I believe its current coverage is, for the most part, appropriate, since one of the main characters is a Piranha Plant. Media revolving around characters that are in some way, shape, or form part of the broader Mario franchise, such as Donkey Kong and Wario, has been consistently provided exhaustive coverage on this wiki, and I don't see why this show should be treated differently. I'm not a fan of that standalone "Nintendo's 2017 Summer of Play Tour" article, though, since from my understanding it technically has nothing to do with Mario, albeit one could probably justify its coverage on grounds that one of its hosts, Jenna, debuted in The Play Nintendo Show, which we've established to be proper Mario media by association with Izzy the Piranha Plant. But some may find that connection tenuous. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 08:12, June 6, 2026 (UTC)
