This article states that DKL2 has 47 DK coins, "One in each level", yet DKL2 only has 39 levels (plus the final boss, which I assume also gives a DK coin). Explain?Shadow2 04:48, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Split Medal from DK Coin

The Medals (according in-game dialogue) from DK: King of Swing act entirely entirely different from DK Coins. They are "medals" with the DK Emblem in them, and even look different than DK Coins. They are never referred to DK Coins in game but rather Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals based on the quality of the Medal. I propose the article be split. Agreements? Disagreements? Coin (Donkey Kong 64)

Like Krash, I'm not sure if this really belongs in the same article. Similar to the medals from DK: King of Swing, they look different from the DK Coins in other games and serve a different purpose, basically replacing bananas as the bonus collectibles. The game itself also refers to them as "COINS" (コイン in the Japanese version); the Player's Guide does refer to them as DK Coins/coins, but it looks for the most part like they're just referred to as "Coins" in the Versus Books and Prima Games guides and "coins" in the BradyGAMES guide (although it also describes them as "DK coins" at one point). Given how different they are and the fact they're mostly not referred to as DK Coins, should the Donkey Kong 64 info be split? LinkTheLefty (talk) 19:27, May 15, 2021 (EDT)

Well, they don't have the function of DK Coins from Donkey Kong Country 2 and it would seem only one, non-primary source calls them that. An altogether different item, the only reason it displays the Donkey Kong branding is that it's thematically appropriate. A similar case would be the DK team tokens from Mario Kart Tour. There's something I overlooked before - in the game, Banana Bunch Coins are also mostly referred to as "coins" generally, so "Coin (Donkey Kong 64)" wouldn't really work as they can be confused for each other. Donkey Kong Country 2

If these coins were referred to as Hero Coins in 2 (because in the GBA version of 2, some Funky's Flight's missions have Funky calling them a Hero Coin), then shouldn't we refer to the mentions in the level's articles to Hero Coins instead of DK Coins? Per LinkTheLefty and Koopa con Carne above. To summarize:

• The DK-emblazoned coins in Donkey Kong 64 are only called DK Coins in lower-priority sources. In the game proper, they are simply called "coins".
• They have a different appearance from DK Coins: a solid coin with a red DK symbol on it as opposed to a hollow ring with a gold DK symbol inside it.
• Most importantly, they also have a different function from DK Coins: instead of being well-hidden collectibles required for perfect completion, these more common coins are merely used as goals in two of the Training Barrels, and in Mine Cart Rides, races, and certain bonus stages to qualify for a Golden Banana.

While LinkTheLefty had suggested splitting off the DK64 coin to its own article, there now exists an article on more miscellaneous coins—coin (generic)—which these coins could easily fit in.

Side note: While the "1-Up Coins" of New Play Control! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat also have a different name, design, and function from DK Coins, I have little to no experience with that game, so they're a can of worms for someone other than me to solve.

Cranky's Video Game Hero Comments

I'd say "coin (generic)" is already a mess of a page given "spinning coins in video games" pretty much as a whole take influence from the MB/SMB ones (especially since Yoshi's Story and Shake It! have coins based on coins in previous games in the respective series that are on the main coin page), but that's a separate conversation. I guess you could make separate articles for Coin (Yoshi series) and Coin (Wario Land series) or Coin (Wario franchise), given that the coins from these series covered on Coin look quite different from the ones in traditional Mario titles (the Yoshi coins typically bear Yoshi's face, and the Wario coins' visual designs are all over the place). We can also merge Coin (Wario Land 4) into such a hypothetical Wario coin article, or at least mention it. rend (talk) (edits) 17:45, October 28, 2026 (UTC)

I think part of the arguement against this kind of split was that we didn't want to split Red Coin's article into a "General Super Mario franchise" article and a "Yoshi series" article, which splitting standard coins in the listed manner would probably cause.
