Make all nominations use UTC

Use UTC 10-0
I have become aware that for (un)featuring nominations we use EST (rather than UTC (aka UTC), like we do for proposals and most other things). I think that we should use UTC instead to make these (un)feature nominations more consistent with the wiki. The wiki uses UTC as its server time (as seen at the "Appearance” tab at "Preferences") so it would make sense to use that for everything on our wiki.

Camwoodstock (talk) Our Featured Article nomination process is pretty dang antiquated, in plenty of ways (if the mere existence of a "removal of opposes" system, let alone the fact it's necessary at all since votes for nomination need to be literally unanimous didn't give it away), and we feel like that's part of why we've had so few nominations in an otherwise busy year for user voting. We'd like to see a fuller renovation, but this is at least a good start by giving a proper, consistent deadline for things.

Slight timezone issue

I just found out in order for this recently passed proposal to be fulfilled properly, the first option in this proposal about the timezones in signatures might need to win, and the wiki's local timezone has to be set to UTC and match the server time. That's because nomination notice templates such as {{UNFANOMSTAT}} require the nominated parameter to be filled in with five tildes (~~~~~), as seen here.
Now of course, there's an alternative way, by instead replacing the five tildes with {{subst:#time: H:i, j F Y}} (UTC), basically kinda like how the proposals do it; this requires the assistance of admins to edit the relevant MediaWiki pages. rend (talk) (edits) 11:44, January 14, 2026 (EST)

@Arend My original intend was for the first option to win but since so many people started to support it, I made an half-support option that seemed to suit everyone (including the opposers) best. But I still don't think the opposers really realize why the main support option should actually win (and why using UTC is better than EST). Yoshi18 (talk | contribs) 13:58, January 14, 2026 (EST)

Regardless of which option wins, I feel like the admins should at the very least edit Template:Preload/fa and Template:Preload/unfa (although the latter page is unprotected for some reason?), so that the five tilde thing or whatever preset is included for the nominated parameter, is replaced with <includeonly>{{subst:#time: H:i, j F Y}} (UTC)</includeonly>, so that it can at least comply with the above proposal without too much trouble. rend (talk) (edits) 14:26, January 14, 2026 (EST)

Clarification of contents

While this page is thorough in terms of describing the qualities of featured articles and how articles meeting the criteria can be nominated, I don't think it adequately explains the effect of an article being featured. I suggest adding that information to the page's introduction:

Featured articles are wiki articles that represent the best the Super Mario Wiki has to offer. In addition to serving as excellent standards for what our articles should look like, featured articles are displayed on the main page on a rotating basis. Featured articles are additionally indicated with a Power Star icon on the page itself and listed below.

Additionally, the criterion that an article nominated to be featured must "not have been previously featured on the main page" does not seem to align with the current featured article system. The intent seems to be that featured articles are a pool that the main page's featured article box can draw from and that articles can freely swap from featured to unfeatured and back, so the criterion could simply be that articles that are currently featured have no reason to be nominated to be featured again.

Lastly, since the main page provides a link to this page promising "more featured articles," I would say that incorporating the full documentation for the feature and unfeature nomination processes inhibits the point of that link. I agree with the expanded introduction and the removal of the requirement to not have been featured on the Main Page in the past. Being featured on the Main Page has no relation to an article's quality. For your last point, I think that simply linking to Category:Featured articles is the best option. That page includes the list of featured articles, while also linking to the documentation page if the reader is interested in it. --Illuminoid (talk) 18:57, October 4, 2026 (UTC)

Hi, I read your comments, thank you so much for the feedback. I agree that the introductory paragraph can use a bit more oomphing up, and I like your description more than the current one. I'd also agree to remove the part about "Not have been previously featured on the main page.", it's always been an odd rule to me, even as I was expanding and overhauling the Featured Articles standards list (I kept it on there for historical reasons, plus I wasn't staff the time I wrote that proposal) and I also think we should remove that to improve clarity, it just adds confusion. For your last point, I would personally reword "More featured articles" on the main page to "What are Featured Articles?" I'll implement the first two suggestions immediately, no need for a proposal, but I'd like more discussion on that suggestion before I follow through with it. The idea of featured articles is simple enough to explain on {{featured}}. I would personally add <hr>''Featured articles represent the best of the {{SITENAME}}. while also keeping the "More featured articles..." link, just with the target modified to the category. --Illuminoid (talk) 20:42, October 5, 2026 (UTC)
