Subcategory for item locations[edit]
I think we should make a subcategory for various collectable locations. There are a lot of those images, which indirectly makes it harder to find any specific image in this category. Since they are all the same kind of image, I think it would assist in organization. Salmancer (talk) 14:17, October 15, 2024 (EDT)
- After seeing Category:Mario Kart World UI screenshots be created to make its screenshots category more usable, I remembered having a hard time using the DS and 3DS Mario & Luigi screenshot categories due to these categories containing hundreds of "collectable location screenshots" as I will be calling them. I realized that I should begin the process of figuring out how to handle this, asked in the Discord, and went back to the wiki to get this in writing here so there is accessible documentation behind this change. This led to me finding this old talk page topic suggesting exactly what I think should be done, which I am reviving.
- The goal of this would be to make a new "Mario & Luigi: Dream Team collectable location screenshots" category to contain these screenshots, which would be a subcategory of the Dream Team screenshots category. The wording "collectable location screenshots" is used to make it clear what it contains, while also being more broad in what it can contain. The word "collectable" allows stuff like Pi'illos to be included, when "item" would be an unusual word to use as the Pi'illos are not actually items.
- Looking through Category:Mario & Luigi: Dream Team screenshots, I encountered 35 article prefixes that encompass all of these collectable location screenshots. I imagine that PorpleBot could be set go through and update the category without having to manually go through each individual file. The article prefixes are:
File:Dozing Sands ( File:Dozing Sands Block File:Dream's Deep ( File:Dreamy Dozing Sands ( File:Dreamy Driftwood Shore ( File:Dreamy Mount Pajamaja ( File:Dreamy Mushrise Park ( File:Dreamy Neo Bowser Castle ( File:Dreamy Pi'illo Castle ( File:Dreamy Somnom Woods ( File:Dreamy Wakeport ( File:Driftwood Shore ( File:Driftwood Shore Block File:M&LDT Dozing Sands File:M&LDT Driftwood Shore File:M&LDT Mount Pajamaja File:M&LDT Mushrise Park File:M&LDT Neo Bowser Castle File:M&LDT Pi'illo Blimport File:M&LDT Pi'illo Castle File:M&LDT Somnom Woods File:M&LDT Wakeport File:Mount Pajamaja ( File:Mount Pajamaja Block File:Mushrise Park ( File:Mushrise Park Block File:Neo Bowser Castle Block File:Pi'illo Blimport ( File:Pi'illo Blimport Block File:Pi'illo Castle ( File:Pi'illo Castle Block File:Somnom Woods ( File:Somnom Woods Block File:Wakeport ( File:Wakeport Block
- Going through each of these articles with these starting names and automatically editing the category to this suggested "collectable location screenshots" category would incorrectly re-categorize only two files (that I know of): File:M&LDT Neo Bowser Castle Fall.png and File:M&LDT Neo Bowser Castle Mega Bob-omb.png. An alternative and better solution (if possible) to this approach would be re-categorizing all screenshots with a resolution of 720×240, as the only screenshots with this resolution are these collectable location screenshots.
- This is a change that should have some writing behind it, as I think this "collectable location screenshot" category idea could be applied to the 5 other DS and 3DS Mario & Luigi games and would result in being a bigger change than it appears to be at first. I went through Category:Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time screenshots and counted that of the 764 screenshots within, 607 appear to be these collectable location screenshots, revealing that this would be a good change to apply to these games categorization-wise on the wiki. --Spencer PK (talk) 11:49, August 27, 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, the creator of Category:Mario Kart World UI screenshots here. I'd like to explain my reasoning. I created that category to effectively act as a makeshift "assets" category, since the Switch 2 hasn't been datamined yet. In that way, I believe this category follows the spirit of the original proposal in splitting screenshots and assets because, effectively, this just separates the screenshots from the pseudo-assets. With that said, I don't oppose the idea presented here. I also created Category:Mario Kart World mission screenshots for all 394 mission screenshots from the game, after all. That is probably a stronger example for you to use.
- Now that I see this idea being potentially implemented at a larger scale, I think it wouldn't hurt to codify everything into a proposal to include this in our Categories guidelines.
Despite the page looking a little messy right now. That's an issue for future me.Especially since, like you said, this could be affecting thousands of images across seven games in the Mario & Luigi series and potentially other topics such as Star Coin locations and Paper Mario item locations. — Lady Sophie_17

- This is going to sound really weird after explaining the scope, but I think this Mario & Luigi idea should only apply to its DS and 3DS games due to how those games almost always have a minimap displayed alongside the player's current location. Almost all of the screenshots of these M&L games on the wiki crop out the screen with the map, as it is not needed most of the time and makes the screenshots easier to use and view. However, the minimaps of these games allow readers to much more easily locate where something may be, so when these collectable location screenshots were taken and uploaded to the wiki, the screens were arranged into a horizontal layout to work better in tables when viewing the wiki on desktop. This causes these collectable location screenshots to have the problem where they are only usable for their intended use due to the minimap being included. {{CSS image crop}} can probably be used to get around the map being included, but I would prefer not using that template as I assume it may not interact as intended with other parts of wiki formatting (bad excuse because I have no evidence). I am not aware of other games that have this unique problem where a map is displayed almost all the time. Other games, like Paper Mario and New Super Mario Bros., do not have these maps (though NSMB does have the "level progress meter" usable in non-ghost house levels), meaning these collectable location screenshots can work in more contexts than originally intended because a map is not attached to the image. For some examples:
- File:PM Star Piece PleasantPathIsland.png primarily illustrates the location of a Star Piece, but it could also work as an image illustrating features of Pleasant Path.
- File:NSMBU Land of Flying Blocks Screenshot.jpg is currently being used for two galleries, the level list of Meringue Clouds, and the Star Coin table of Land of Flying Blocks.
- File:Dreamy Dozing Sands (Deco Pi'illo 2) Block 1.png is one of these M&L collectable location screenshots. The existence of the minimap in this screenshot makes it much less appealing to use in contexts outside of showing the exact location of this ? Block.

- I would only want this "collectable location screenshot" change to applied to these M&L games where a minimap is always displayed as there is a large collection of screenshots in this format that is hurting the usability of the screenshot categories. I would not want this to be applied broadly to stuff like Star Coin locations, Power Star locations, Power Moon locations, Banandium Gem locations, and so on. While there is an idea there to apply it broadly that could be useful outside of these specific M&L games, I do not want to be the one taking responsibility for and proposing something that far-reaching. --Spencer PK (talk) 12:59, August 27, 2026 (UTC)
- You make great points about limiting the scope and I agree with them. In my case, the Mario Kart World mission screenshots are not useable for other purposes because they all have the mission name plastered on top like a watermark. In this case, I feel it's even more important to establish an official guideline, since its use case is stricter than I originally thought. — Lady Sophie_17

- The discussion reaching this point has made me realize how this suggested idea of these M&L screenshot subcategories can be interpreted as a broad slippery slope change, which is not the intent. It is more seeing if this suggested change would make sense, which has now turned it into a deeper discussion of the wiki's guidelines.

- The usability of images can range from broad (can be applied to many articles at once without problems) to specialized (intended to be used on a few articles; when used outside of the intended use, it has clear flaws). Sometimes, a game will require a large amount of these specialized screenshots to be uploaded (Mario Kart World mission screenshots, the Dream Team collectable location screenshots), and these images will be unfit for broad use because of what they need to be and/or have. As a result, the large numbers of these screenshots will fill its respective category and make the usability of the category go down, but because of what they need to be, they all follow a format that can place them into a subcategory to resolve the problem.
- The requirements for making these subcategories should be that the images to subcategorize are specialized and all have something in common that makes using them broadly a bad idea, and(/or?) that there is enough images to disrupt the usability of its category. The Mario Kart World mission screenshots have the zoomed-out view and the text, making them unfit as normal game screenshots and they would disrupt their category. The Dream Team collectable location screenshots are all formatted with the screens in a horizontal layout to easily fit the minimap in; the screen layout and minimap makes them unfit for broad use and they currently are disrupting their category. The screenshots showing the Star Coins of New Super Mario Bros. U are all screenshots of normal gameplay that feature a Star Coin as part of them; these screenshots can be used broadly because nothing is making these be highly specialized, but there are 246 Star Coins, so there are that many screenshots, but it does not feel disruptive to its category somehow (likely because the files are named in a way that places a majority of them in a row instead of scattered everywhere).
- There is a lot to take in here. This discussion has gone in the right direction and has made it clear that rules for screenshot subcategories should be defined, totally through a proposal, and build off of what was said here. It does make me afraid of this being a slippery slope of gradually moving more and more into subcategories. I think the categories work great as a repository of everything of a specific type uploaded to the wiki; they should be a way to quickly look through everything the wiki has. If this becomes a slippery slope and more general subcategories are made, it would be harder to look at everything the wiki already has because someone could easily be looking in the wrong category or be missing the link to a subcategory. The suggested M&L subcategories would not make the screenshots categories become more fragmented and instead make it overall more usable. I am not sure if it would be fine without a proposal to go ahead with making these M&L-focused subcategories knowing how many files would be affected, but it would clearly help the usability of the wiki.
- (I was going to end the message there, but I noticed that the wiki has Brothership screenshots in a similar format to the DS and 3DS games' collectable location screenshots where it is two screenshots, one in-game and one showing the in-game map when pausing, in a horizontal layout as one file. Example: File:Allsand Island (Seedle-ize).png. So it looks like my intent with these subcategory suggestions would apply to Brothership as well.) --Spencer PK (talk) 06:37, August 28, 2026 (UTC)
