Relatives

Red Crabbers[1][2] are enemies in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are red-colored Crabbers that, unlike Blue Crabbers, are more numerous and aggressive towards the player character. They are commonly encountered in sand galaxies, wandering around, and upon noticing Mario (or Luigi), they will move in a zigzag pattern toward him. They can be defeated by throwing a Fireball at them, by hitting them with Rock Mario's boulder form or by spinning at their rear, which can be reached by jumping over the Red Crabber, spinning on its face, launching a Star Bit, or jumping on it (which will make the Red Crabber protect its face, leaving its rear vulnerable), and lastly, if the player runs around the Red Crabber, they can reach its rear thanks to its slow turn. Upon defeat, they drop three Star Bits. Like most enemies in both games, if a Red Crabber successfully lands a hit, it will laugh at the player character. If, after chasing the player, a Red Crabber moves too far from its original spot and loses the aggro towards the player, it will dig down and move back to its original spot, where it digs back up, as long as the player is not above it..

History

Super Mario Galaxy

Red Crabbers first appear in Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port. They mostly appear in groups with a Blue Crabber always among them. They are first encountered in the Dusty Dune Galaxy mission "Sunbaked Sand Castle", where only one appears on the Sand Tide Planet alongside other enemies. They later reappear in the Bigmouth Galaxy, where once again only one Red Crabber appears in the starting area. In the Sea Slide Galaxy, Red Crabbers only appear in the third mission "The Silver Stars of Sea Slide". Here they appear on the Penguru's Place planet, where several of them appear on the sand area of the planet guarding a Silver Star. Finally, Red Crabbers appear in the Deep Dark Galaxy, where they appear in all missions on the beach area of the starting planet.

Red Crabbers reappear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switch port alongside Blue Crabbers. Yoshi can lick up Red Crabbers to spit out their big pincer in the same manner as a Spiny Egg or Bullet Bill. The pincer acts as a boomerang, as it flies out for some distance, then returns. The pincers are unable to destroy glass cases. If the pincer hits a wall or flies for long enough, it will be destroyed.

Red Crabbers appear in the first two missions of the Starshine Beach Galaxy, where they can be found mainly on the Tropical Cloud Tower Planet as common enemies. After the player enters the Teleporter near the cabin at the start of the galaxy, they will be teleported to a bonus planet inhabited by Red Crabbers; if Mario defeats them all within the time limit, he gets three 1-Up Mushrooms. They also appear in all missions of the Battle Belt Galaxy, where they have a dedicated planet on which the player must defeat all of them to progress. Additionally, in the Prankster Comet mission of the Boulder Bowl Galaxy, "Rolling Crabber Romp", the player needs to defeat a large group of them along with a few Blue Crabbers before time runs out in order to make a Power Star appear. As the planet this takes place on is made of hollow metal, they cannot burrow here.

Notes

A glitched Crabber
The glitch in action
  • In Surf, Sand, and Silver Stars, if the player spins a Red Crabber into deep water, the Crabber will dig back to the surface, but only half of it will appear. It is frozen, and the player cannot interact with it. After a couple of seconds, the Red Crabber will come back up, though a couple seconds after, it will be standing in midair. When it spots the player, it will fall back to the ground.[13][14]
