Name?[edit]

Where does the name of this come from? The quote linked doesn't give a name to it and as the manual implies, is called ? Candy, which is the only official name I could find about this. It was previously called "Candy Space" after the Orb Space (which officially comes from the Mario Party 6 manual and was retained in the Mario Party 7 one), before it was moved to its current name. I can see this name being derived from the Star Area and Coin Area (I also wonder where the Coin Block Area name in Mario Party 7 came from as it isn't mentioned in the manual, nor why there are two pages describing the exact same thing), but the "? Space" name is the only official name I could find. As MarioWiki:Naming says:

  • "Ideally, the subject is named in the game itself, but whatever instruction material is enclosed with the game is also considered a primary naming source. If there is inconsistency between the manual and the game itself regarding a name, the game's version takes precedence."

The only name that takes priority above names found in manuals are names found in-game, of which there is none for this subject in Mario Party 8, and manual names absolutely take priority over derived names; there isn't even a notice that it is derived if it is. Therefore, unless there is a source confirming this name, I feel like it should be moved to "? Candy" based on the only official name we have on this subject. Altendo 20:37, April 20, 2025 (EDT)

Move to "? Candy"[edit]

Brown Block This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit this section or its subsections. If you wish to discuss the article, please do so in a new section below the proposal.

Move to "? Candy" 9-0
Per above, there is no apparent source for the name "Candy Area", while SMW:NAMING says that the name provided in the instruction manual takes priority over everything else unless there is inconsistency between the manual and the game (I'm not saying there isn't, as the manual claims that the Surprise Wagon requires completion of the Star Battle Arena to be unlocked, while only the Minigame Wagon requires the SBA to be completed for access, for example), but the only inconsistency about this topic is that there is no provided in-game name, while in the manual, it is named "? Candy", the highest rank for any name this subject currently has. As for potential "Candy Area" name sources, I could not get the flash website to load (via Wayback Machine and Ruffle), and even then, the manual takes priority over official websites, and the name is never shown in-game, instead referring to them as "finding it around the board". This is unlike the Orb Space, which is an official name found in the manual, like ? Candy. The name also shouldn't be a concern, as ? Block and many other "? object" pages exist.

If anyone can show an official usage of the "Candy Area" name, I will allow that name to stay on the page following the move, unless it is found in-game, in which case I will cancel this proposal as the reason for starting it would have become moot.

Comments[edit]

So "? Candy" is the subject's only known official name? In that case, I feel like this is so cut and dry it probably doesn't even need a proposal. Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 14:47, May 9, 2025 (EDT)

Someone with an actual text dump could probably be even more thorough, but "? Candy" is used in the manual (pg. 11), and the in-game candy tutorial... doesn't even list a name for the space at all, it just says "You can also get Candy by finding it around the board." The actual space itself is only called "? Candy" when it's treated as its own bespoke space, though. We feel like the "Candy Area" name came from someone melding the "? Candy" name with "Star Area", which is from the same page in the manual, possibly unintentionally, but given the page's age, it could just be a naive editor from decades ago unwittingly starting some WikiJank™ after moving from the initial "Candy Space" conjectural name. Plus, there's several other proposals going on that don't technically need one, namely, the whole "Video games with unique titles". PrincessPeachFan (talk) 08:04, May 11, 2025 (EDT)
A proposal is fine if there's a chance someone could reasonably disagree. But I don't see how this move could be remotely controversial. Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 05:34, May 12, 2025 (EDT)
