Swimming
Appears in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - Arcade Edition

Swimming is an Event in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - Arcade Edition. The player’s goal is to swim across the pool and back to the side in which the player begun before the other opponents do. Depending on the difficulty, the time required to cross the pool and return to the starting side is different.

Gameplay[edit]

For an extra boost at the beginning, the player can hold the blue and red buttons until told to release. If the player held the buttons at all and released the buttons at the right time, the player will be rewarded with an extra boost at the start. If the player releases the buttons before the "go" signal, they will get a miss and perform a bad start. Once the player’s character has started swimming, the player needs to time both blue and red button presses with symbols on-screen. If the player is too late on pressing the buttons, the character's speed will drop greatly. When the player’s character reaches the other side of the pool, the player must time a jump when the yellow outlines of a circle match the size of the outlines of a red circle. The better the player times their jump in real life on the footpad, the quicker they will move onto the final section and get an edge on the rest of the competition. On the way back to the original starting side of the pool, the player must jump to start "Quick Start" mode. While in this mode, the player’s character flies above the water while the player must mash the blue, red and yellow buttons to reach the other end quicker than the rest of the competition. If the player goes to the other end of the pool and back faster than the competition, the player’s character wins the event. If the player finishes with a time faster than the target time depending on the difficulty, they move onto the next day, unless the event is being participated in on the final day.

Final day version[edit]

Upon reaching the final day, there is a 1-in-3 chance that this event will be selected. The event plays the same besides the player only having one other opponent, where the opponent's character varies depending on the player's character, and the Goal for the day’s difficulty being labeled as “Extreme.” Rather than beat a pre-determined time, the player must simply finish ahead of their opponent to win.
