Letters[1] appear as hidden objects in Wrecking Crew. They spell either "MARIO" or "LUIGI," and collecting them in the correct order rewards an extra life. The player can reveal letters by breaking walls in a certain order, then its letter appears in the background. 59 of the 100 phases include letters. The letters stop rewarding extra lives when the player has eight.
Some challenges in NES Remix involve uncovering the letters.
