Judo is an event in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, exclusive to Tokyo 1964. In this event, two players compete against each other in a Judo match. The goal is to either earn two waza-ari or one ippon by throwing their opponent. In story mode, the player controls Sonic, who must defeat Bowser in the event.

Gameplay[edit]

Both players stand at a distance from each other. They must try to grab their opponent and throw them. Both players can only move forward and backwards across a 2D plane. If a player moves out of bounds, they will receive a shido. Players can take quick steps forward or backward to help them either close in on their opponent or to evade their attacks. Players can deflect their opponent's grapple if they perform a kaeshi-waza the instant they are grabbed by their opponent, making their attacker stagger and vulnerable to a counterattack. If a player is grabbed, they must try to center their balance while the attacker must try to throw them off their balance in order to throw them. The balance of the defender is determined by how active they are during the match; if they perform lots of grabs and move too much, their stamina will be weaker and therefore makes them easier to throw. If the attacker successfully throws their opponent, they will either receive a waza-ari or an ippon depending on how fast they did it; if they throw their opponent quickly, they will receive an ippon. If the throw took time, they will receive a waza-ari. To win the game, the players must get either an ippon or two waza-ari. There is also a timer of 15:00 that constantly goes down during the Judo match. It only stops if a player receives a shido or after a throw is done. If the timer runs out, the winner is determined by their waza-ari and shidos.
