Move this category?[edit]

Shouldn't this category be moved to "Category:Classic courses", since the retro courses page was moved to that? I ask this in case there is any reason it hasn't been moved yet. LuigiMaster123's signature icon. LuigiMaster123

Decide how the "classic courses" category should be updated[edit]

Following a recent proposal, it was decided that we would no longer treat "classic courses" as a universal term for Mario Kart courses that have returned in another game, instead looking at how Nintendo has used the term to determine on a case-by-case basis whether it should apply to any particular course's return in any particular game.

At present, the "classic courses" category encompasses all courses that have appeared in multiple Mario Kart games, including courses which fall outside of the new "classic courses" definition such as those which have only returned as "extra tracks" in Mario Kart: Super Circuit. As such, we must determine how best to update this category so that it doesn't conflict with said definition going forward.

I see three potential options here:

  1. We rename the category to "returning courses", effectively retaining the status quo.
  2. We update the category to only include courses which can reasonably be proven to fit within the definition of a "classic course", as outlined in the previous proposal.
  3. We remove the category altogether.

Personally, I do not think this category is particularly necessary, seeing as most courses in the series have returned at this point, and that I see "returning courses" as less of a distinct group of courses and moreso just a matter of fact. That being said, I believe that an overall "returning courses" category is preferable over that of a "classic courses" one which follows the new definition, seeing as the driving force behind the previous proposal was that "classic courses" as a term is very loosely defined as it is.

Option 1: Rename to "returning courses"[edit]

  1. Polley001 (talk) Per my reasoning in the proposal, secondary choice.
  2. The Dab Master (talk) It's better to not have to debate whether a course's article belongs in this category or not. And excluding certain ones just because they don't "fit the definition" just feels weird. Per proposal.

Option 2: Update to meet the new "classic course" definition[edit]

  1. LadySophie17 (talk) Secundary option. Per my opinion in option 3. I would rather enforce the use of Nintendo's definition of "classic course" rather than codify the broadened scope of "returning courses".
  2. Salmancer (talk) I think this category can still theoretically be useful, and its not like continued maintenance of it incurs much of a cost if we already have a table of returning courses to maintain.

Option 3: Remove altogether[edit]

  1. Polley001 (talk) Per my reasoning in the proposal.
  2. Wii U The Dab Master (talk) Per proposal. Pretty much every course before Mario Kart World will get remade at some point, so this category will eventually become completely useless.
  3. LadySophie17 (talk) Per proposal. If the definition is simply "a course which has reappeared" and not a distinct group of courses as outlined by the games, then it shouldn't exist. We don't have categories for returning enemies or returning karts, and the categories function is already replaced by the existence of a table of returning courses in Course (Mario Kart series).
  4. Dive Rocket Launcher (talk) Option 1 is too broad. By definition, every course in Mario Kart Arcade GP is a "returning course" because they also appear in Mario Kart Arcade GP 2.
  5. SolemnStormcloud (talk) Per all.
  6. EvieMaybe (talk) per all.
  7. Wilben (talk) Per all.

Classic comments[edit]

Slightly pedantic correction, the current category doesn't actually include every course that has appeared in multiple Mario Kart games, as Yoshi's Island and Squeaky Clean Sprint are missing (but not Sky-High Sundae since it returned in World). Good catch, guess it's a remnant of the whole "they're considered new in both games" thing. Which does mean a change would be needed if it were to become "returning courses" (not that it seems likely at the moment). Polley001 (talk) 21:54, May 29, 2026 (UTC)
