One player can make the other player drop Big Stars in order for them to get ahead. According to the instruction book, a player can do the following to make the other player drop their Big Star:
One Big Star at a time appears in the level. After players have collected at least one Big Star, players can make each other drop Big Stars (if they have any) by jumping on them or attacking them with a Fireball, Shell Dash, etc. Players can drop Big Stars by touching an enemy, falling into a bottomless pit, or getting crushed by walls. Ground Pounding or Drill Spinning into a player can make that player drop a lot of Big Stars.

* Jump on the opponent.
* Hit the opponent with a Fireball or a Shell Dash.
* Get hit by enemies, fall off the course, get crushed by walls, etc.

There are also ways to get your opponet to lose three Big Stars at once; provided they have that much:

* Ground Pound the opponent.
* In the ice stage, drill into the opponent after jumping off of the Spin Block in the level.

Trivia
*The Big Stars in New Super Mario Bros. look practically identical to the Power Stars in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS.
