The letters of the name[1] are hidden objects from Wrecking Crew that, when revealed in the correct order ("MARIO" or "LUIGI"), give an extra life. Letters can be revealed by breaking specific walls in the right order. Upon breaking the wall, a letter will appear on the background. Letters of the name appear in 59 of the 100 phases. Once the maximum of eight extra lives has been reached, the letters will not award any more lives.
