The Mysterious Murasame Castle, also known by its Japanese title Nazo no Murasame Jō, is a Famicom Disk System game released by Nintendo in 1986. It did not see an international release until 2014, when it was released on Virtual Console on the Nintendo 3DS. As a result, the franchise's crossovers with the Super Mario franchise largely were limited to Japanese versions of games.

Prominent crossover elements[edit]

Takamaru[edit]

Takamaru is the protagonist of The Mysterious Murasame Castle. As an apprentice samurai, he is tasked with investigating the Murasame Castle. He battles armies of ninja and samurai through four other castles in pursuit of this goal. He appears as an Assist Trophy in the Super Smash Bros. series.

History in the Super Mario franchise[edit]

Donkey Konga 3[edit]

The Japanese version of WarioWare: D.I.Y. features the microgame Murasame Jō, which is based upon The Mysterious Murasame Castle. The microgame's gameplay involves Takamaru avoiding shuriken attacks by turning invisible. Internationally, the microgame is replaced by Pikmin.

Super Mario 3D World[edit]

In Super Mario 3D World, the Japanese name of Hands-On Hall is 「タッチ!謎のからくり城」 ("Touch! The Mysterious Mechanism Castle"), in reference to the game's name.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

The sound effect "Ninja Attack!" is based upon The Mysterious Murasame Castle, featuring Takamaru running through ninjas while a sped-up version of the game's castle town theme plays. Additionally, the sound effect for discarding an extraneous Key is taken from the item collection sound in The Mysterious Murasame Castle.

Nintendo Land includes multiplayer and single-player attractions based on various franchises published by Nintendo. In addition to games like Mario Chase and Luigi's Ghost Mansion, the game features a mode based on The Mysterious Murasame Castle called Takamaru's Ninja Castle, where a playable Mii is tasked with defeating ninjas through four cardboard environments. By flicking the GamePad, the player can throw shuriken at ninjas or slice them with a katana.
