Nintendo Power Guide for SPM: pg. 44: Luigi Makes a Run for It:"After you defeat Mimi, the story will gears and give you a glimpse of Luigi's situation in Castle Bleck. Follow the Goombas until you reach a dead end, in which time Mimi and her minions will show up and take Luigi back into custody." It's supposed to be Nastasia that shows up, not Mimi.
