Break the Targets!

Break the Targets!
1P Mode opening to Break the Targets! in the original Super Smash Bros.

Break the Targets!, also known as Bonus 1 (Break the Targets), Target Test, and Target Smash is a recurring minigame in the early Super Smash Bros. games. As its name suggests, the player needs to attack and destroy ten floating targets scattered throughout the stage. In both Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, each character has a unique stage in Break the Targets built around their capabilities and aesthetic, though in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it is instead based around difficulty, with five stages shared between all characters. While most targets can be broken in any order, some are placed in such a way to be difficult if not impossible to recover from them, making them intended as the last one to hit. The first game also features a similar minigame called Board the Platforms! The following lists all the Break the Targets stages for Super Mario and adjacent characters in the former two games.

Super Smash Bros.

Mario

Mario's Break the Targets!

Mario's stage is made up of red girders resembling those in Donkey Kong. It features a vertically moving thin red lift on the right and several targets placed a short distance vertically over one another. The left side is separated from the rest by a tall vertical girder that can only be climbed from the central-right section.

Targets
  • At the left end of the starting platform, against a wall
  • On the other end of the starting platform, beneath a bridge
  • Above the starting point, over the tip of an arrow
  • Above the previous one, reachable through a Double Jump or Super Jump Punch
  • Above the previous one, reachable through a Super Jump Punch
  • Off in the distance over the right side, hittable with a Fireball
  • At the apex of the red lift's path
  • Floating off over the left side of the tall structure reachable from the top of the moving lift
  • A short distance below the previous one
  • Beneath a hook-shaped platform at the bottom of the fall from the previous two, reachable with careful jumps or the Super Jump Punch

Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong's Break the Targets!

Donkey Kong's stage is also made of the red girders. It features thin red platforms that can either move or stay still. It also has a thick moving caution-striped wall floating back-and-forth in the middle.

Targets
  • Right at the starting position
  • A short distance left of the starting position
  • On top of a short jump to the left of the previous one
  • On top of a horizontally moving lift over the starting position; the target moves in tandem with the lift.
  • Boxed in a square of girders above the previous lift, hittable with the Giant Punch
  • In the air over the box from the previous one
  • In the air directly to the right of the previous one
  • In the air over the right side of the stage, reachable by using Spinning Kong from an unmoving thin red platform near the previous targets
  • Floating above another thin platform down and to the right of the previous target
  • Underneath the thin platform beneath the previous one

Yoshi

Yoshi's Break the Targets!

Yoshi's stage is made up of wooden platforms including stairblocks and ones topped with green grass-like material, including on the lifts; this aesthetic is shared with the stages for the game's Pokémon characters. The leftmost area is separated from the rest by a large gap.

Targets
  • Directly to the left of the starting position
  • Slightly above and to the right of the previous one
  • Boxed in a wooden platform to the right, which Yoshi can hit through with his normal attacks

  • On the opposite side of a wall of stairblocks from the previous one, reachable by Flutter Jumping underneath it
  • Beneath a vertically moving lift on the left side
  • Over a pit off the right edge of a structure on the left side of the stage, hittable with Yoshi's normal attacks from the ledge
  • Above the platform the previous target was near, hittable with an Egg Throw
  • To the left of the previous one, also hittable with an Egg Throw
  • Between two diagonal walls beneath the starting position, reachable by riding a horizontally moving lift under the platform and then using a Flutter Jump to go between the walls

Luigi

Luigi's Break the Targets!

Luigi's stage is made up of blue floor blocks and features moving, caution-striped apparatuses, with a vertically moving open-bottomed structure to the right and a square-pathed lift to the left, as well as a blue Super Mario Bros.-styled lift moving horizontally beneath.

Targets
  • Right next to the starting position
  • A short distance above the starting position
  • Above the previous one, over the middle arrow; the Super Jump Punch can be used to reach it.
  • Off the ledge to the right of the yellow structure; the Super Jump Punch can be used to recover from it.
  • On top of an upper "roof" of blocks on the right side over the yellow structure, accessible via the Super Jump Punch
  • Over the striped lift on the left
  • Above the arrow over the previous one; the Super Jump Punch can be used to reach it.
  • Off the edge of an inverted L-shaped cluster of blocks to the lower-left; the Super Jump Punch can be used to recover from reaching this one.

  • Under the moving yellow structure, attackable with a Fireball when the yellow structure's wall is raised.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Mario

A Target Test stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee

Mario's stage is made of a combination of red and blue girders, with some of the former being slanted akin to 25m in Donkey Kong; Mario starts the stage on one of these slanted ones. • In a girder-surrounded vertical alcove over the previous one
  • Over the right edge of the girder platform beneath the previous three, which can be hit with a Fireball
  • In an alcove on the leftmost side of the same girder platform
  • In an alcove at the top of the blue girder structure, reachable by climbing the descending lifts
  • In a narrower alcove midway down the blue structure, requiring a Fireball to squeeze in and hit it.
  • Floating near the bottom of the blue structure
  • Underneath the red structure; it can be reached with a Super Jump Punch or Cape after a jump from the bottom of the lifts' path.

Yoshi

A Target Test stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee

Luigi

A Target Test stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee

Luigi's stage is made of green girders positioned into a square, with a small gap in the floor's center, a Nintendo GameCube floating still in the middle of the room, and three floating Flippers with one revolving clockwise around the GameCube in a diagonal round-cornered square shape path; and two bouncing around in an X-shape in different directions along the square's interior and the GameCube, both hitting each side of the square twice and each side of the GameCube once per revolution. All of the targets here move in some manner.

  • Bouncing in an arcing W-shape between the walls while never reaching the ceiling, hitting the ground twice and going over the GameCube between them
  • Bouncing in an erratic zigzag rapidly going between the ceiling and floor, slowly moving horizontally along the room's length before bouncing back the other way

Board the Platforms!

Board the Platforms!
1P Mode opening to Board the Platforms!

Board the Platforms!, also known as Bonus 2 (Board the Platforms), is a minigame found in the original Super Smash Bros. as a companion to Break the Targets! In it, the player character must stand on ten floating platforms of varying sizes scattered throughout a stage. The platforms that have not yet been activated have a blinking red light, while ones that have been have a solid blue light instead. Like Break the Targets in that game, every character has a different layout based around their capabilities and the aesthetic of their home series. The following lists all the Board the Platforms stages for Super Mario and adjacent characters.

Mario

Mario's Board the Platforms!

Mario's stage is made up of red girders resembling those in Donkey Kong. It also features superheated areas that cause burn-based damage if touched, and rising-and-falling girder columns that must be used to cross them. However, the undersides of the same girder platforms become downward-shoving obstacles in the section beneath these ones.
