(First topic)[edit]

I added a Trivia section, along with the fact that he calls himself "Jr. Koopa" at one point. any insight to why this may be? Translation error perhaps? Luke the Almighty 22:40, 27 June 2008 (EDT)

Possible to skip Forever Forest fight?[edit]

I read somewhere that it's possible to skip this fight. Apparently, what you're supposed to do is go back to Toad Town AS SOON AS it's possible to create the warp pipe to and from Bow's Mansion, but before Bow joins the team. (If you go back any time after Bow joins, the fight will trigger.) Then you can use the warp pipe to get to and from the mansion without going back through the forest; thus skipping the fight.

Two things - can anyone confirm if this is true? And secondly, if it is true, will the fight be skipped permanently after a certain point in the game (such as after you fight him the time after that)? Or can you always do this fight, even much later in the game, simply by walking back from the mansion instead of using the warp pipe? Avengah 05:08, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

nope.avi. I've just checked: as soon as you get boots the game triggers Jr. Troopa to appear in Forever Forest. SWFlashPersonal file

Jr. Troopa Picture Error[edit]

I'd like to report that on Jr. Troopa's second battle, he doesn't have a spike on his head. He is hiding in his shell on his second battle. I know this because in my game, he hides in his shell. Should we change the picture to where he's hiding in his shell? Thanks. -User:O O

third and fourth battle skippable?[edit]

It is possible to avoid the third and the fourth battle aginst Jr. Troopa by activating the pipes connected to Boo's Mansion/Yoshi's Village in Toad Town Tunnels before completing the 3/5 chapter. Therefore Mario can go back to Toad Town through pipes after completing the chapter without meeting Jr. Troopa.

Is that possible? activating the pipes connected to Boo's Mansion and Yoshi's Village requires the Super Boots and Sushie respectively, but once you get them Jr. Troopa immediately appears in the Forever Forest fork and the sea between Toad Town and Lavalava Island. Note that you need to return to Toad Town to activate the pipes. It's impossible to activate the pipes near Boo's Mansion and in Yoshi's Village from there in the first place. (Except if you use glitches.) A gossip-loving Toad (talk) 03:26, 3 April 2016 (EDT)

Sounds like either misinformation or someone hacking the game. Removed. Niiue (talk) 05:42, 3 April 2016 (EDT)

Final Battle Mechanics?[edit]

What dictates Jr. Troopa's form changes in his final battle? Is it that once he loses a certain amount of health in one go he changes, or is it that once he is below a certain HP? Is he able to skip forms? Which forms get which moves? Jdrawer (talk) 00:22, 17 December 2018 (EST)

Strategy Guide[edit]

The strategy guide indicates that Jr. Troopa isn't fought in Chapters 3 and 5 until the end of said chapters instead of when you get the Super Boots/Sushie respectively. Probably because you'd have no real reason to go back to the Forever Forest/Toad Town Docks before you beat the respective chapters... PrincessPeachFan (talk) 23:36, January 8, 2023 (EST)
He definitely does appear at the points mentioned in the article, clarified myself in my latest playthrough. Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 06:08, January 9, 2023 (EST)
Yeah, I know. I was just relating what the strategy guide has listed (and this is the same strategy guide which calls the Bucket and Scarf "Marvelous Bucket" and "Fabulous Scarf" which makes me think that it was maybe written during the pre-release days). Plus, they say Jr. Troopa uses all of his tricks in his final battle whereas YouTube videos show him just using a few (normal, winged with spikes, wand). PrincessPeachFan (talk) 12:52, January 9, 2023 (EST)
The guide is also wrong about the last battle; everytime I play matches with what you described from YouTube videos. Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 13:23, January 9, 2023 (EST)

Is he really a Troopa?[edit]

I know the English script literally names him "Jr. Troopa" (in one of the rare moments they prioritize "Troopa" over "Koopa" as they should for K.T.'s, but I digress), but the Japanese name for him, "Kowappa," appears to play of "Koopa"/"Kuppa" - Bowser's name, and is not even remotely related to "Nokonoko" - Koopa Troopa's name, and indeed most named K.T.'s in the game use "Noko" in the Japanese script, with the only exception I can think of offhand being Kolorado (EDIT: And Kooper, misremembered his JP name as being what Koops' is). This isn't all, as his face and expressions actually appear to be drawn based off Baby Bowser's sprites in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (particularly the mouth shape, and the eyes/brows), and look substantially different from any "other" Koopa Troopas in the game, lacking the hooked beak and such in favor of a more rounded muzzle. Confusing the issue further is his use of bat wings rather than bird wings like a Paratroopa would have, and then gaining traits of Spike Tops and Magikoopas later - though the wand could also be a nod to the Koopalings. The only physical traits he has that are more similar to Troopas than to the Bowser-type Koopas are being completely yellow (from the small amount of his body we see) and wearing shoes. At the very least, he could be treated as an "ambiguous" case like Tutankoopa currently is. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:12, December 28, 2024 (EST)

I can agree to classifying him as an unsorted Koopa clan member. However, names aside, is there any indication he's a member of the Koopa clan to begin with? Judging by his sprites, he doesn't even seem have a shell. I realize Unshelled Koopas are a thing, but still... Also, I have to point out that Kooper's Japanese name isn't a "Noko" pun. The Koopa Troopa party member. Blinker (talk) 10:46, December 28, 2024 (EST)
That egg's covering up so much it's hard to tell (and to be fair, that's a "shell" of a different type), though the Baby Bowser sprite influence is still definitely there. (He's kind of a proto-Bowser Jr., much like Koopa Kid, but much more different in appearance and affiliation.) Misremembered Kooper as having Koops' JP name... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 12:59, December 28, 2024 (EST)
There are a few sprites that show about half of his back, and if he were to have a shell, it would pretty much have to be on his butt, which seems unlikely. Blinker (talk) 13:28, February 21, 2025 (EST)
I support changing it to just Koopa, too. TomAndTheCats (talk) 22:01, May 24, 2025 (EDT)
I also support this, he should be removed from Template:Koopa Troopas, Category:Koopa Troopas, and the notable members section in Koopa Troopa's article, because he clearly isn't one. By the way, lots of subjects in the franchise have Koopa in their English names and aren't related to actual Koopa Troopas, so Jr. Troopa not being one isn't too unusual. Rainbow Road Drifter - TalkBadge 15:29, July 8, 2025 (EDT)
I wonder if the "Troopa" in Jr. Troopa's name is to allude to something else other than only Koopa Troopas. I've tried to look up if "junior trooper" meant anything, but so far no clear results. ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 15:57, July 8, 2025 (EDT)

Determine what his species is[edit]

A Yellow Block from Super Mario World This talk page section contains an unresolved talk page proposal. Please try to help and resolve the issue by voting or leaving a comment.

Jr. Troopa fails to hit Mario
Jr. Troopa's having one shell of a bad day.
Jr. Troopa transforming for the second time in Paper Mario
Do you think I play baseball just because I'm a bat? No! I play batminton!

This proposal is to settle the discussion in the section above. Currently, the wiki classifies this character as a Koopa Troopa, which is seemingly based purely on his English name. However, as a section on his page already covers, his Japanese name seems to be a play on Bowser's Japanese name (and, by extension, the species based on him that shares his name in Japanese), and his face is reminiscent of Baby Bowser's sprites in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (which this game takes a lot of design cues from), making the Koopa Troopa connection exclusive to the localization.

Baby Bowser from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

There is one wrinkle: you can see his backside in some cutscenes, showing that he doesn't have a turtle shell. Shell-less Koopas are not unheard of, of course, but if he really is intended to be any kind of Koopa, it seems like an odd thing to omit. This could be an oversight, of course, or just a design choice to simplify his sprites or to imply that the shell is attached to his buttcheeks under his eggshell, but there's no way to know for certain. It isn't unusual for this game to have completely original character designs. There's also the fact that he can grow bat-like wings instead of the usual bird-like wings of Koopas, though considering the animation he uses, this is probably just magic, not biological. Either way, I disagree with classifying him as a Koopa Troopa purely because of his English name, and his Japanese name and similarities to Baby Bowser make me lean towards him being one of Bowser's species. Evidently, the English localization staff saw his similarities to Koopas too.

Jr. Troopa is a Koopa (Bowser's species)[edit]

  1. Master Jr. Rocket Launcher (talk) First choice, per proposal.
  2. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - Per proposal. In addition to being Baby Bowser-based himself and one of the Bowser Jr. precursors, there's the whole "magic" thing similar to the Koopalings well and Magikoopas. Not to mention the Kowappa/Kuppa thing that has been brought up already.

Jr. Troopa is a nonspecific Koopa (like Motley Bossblob)[edit]

  1. Master Jr. Rocket Launcher (talk) Second choice, per proposal.
  2. Camwoodstock (talk) This feels like it makes the most sense to us. We don't know enough about the original Japanese script, which apparently implies more he might be of Bowser's species, but the English script and visuals definitely lean more on "nonspecific Koopa Troopa"; as an English wiki, we feel like it's only fair to prioritize that interpretation... No matter what, however, we should probably expand the "Species" section to clarify this better. It currently just says "However, the original Japanese script makes no such implication, and his name in that language instead seems to play of "Koopa" used as Bowser's name, implying he may be intended as his species." and refuses to elaborate.
  3. SolemnStormcloud (talk) Per proposal.
  4. Wandering Poplin (talk) While he does seem to be one of the many "proto-Bowser Jr" type characters from this time period, I think categorizing him as a "Miscellaneous Koopa" like Motley Bossblob is definitely the more suitable option, and it doesn't necessarily contradict either interpretation of what this character was intended to be.
  5. EvieMaybe (talk) per all
  6. LadySophie17 (talk) Ngl, I thought this was already the case.
  7. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - Per proposal
  8. Mariuigi Khed (talk) if it was for me, I would categorize him as a "Royal Koopa" because of interesting theories (magic user, spikes, wings, and stuff), but it's much correct and safer to leave him as a "generic Koopa".
  9. Jr. Dab Master (talk) Per all.
  10. Kieran376 (talk) Per all

Jr. Troopa's species should be considered unknown[edit]

  1. Master Jr. Rocket Launcher (talk) Third choice, per proposal.
  2. Blinker (talk) Without a shell, beak, or pun name, I'm really not sure this guy is supposed to be a Koopa to begin with. He could be, but he could also just be, I dunno, a weird baby dino or something. While I wouldn't say with any conviction that "Jr. Troopa is not any pre-established species" I'm treating this as a "let's not make assumptions about what he is" option.

Jr. Troopa is a Koopa Troopa (status quo)[edit]

Master Jr. Comments[edit]

One of the images attached with an email in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Nintendo Switch)

@Blinker, we'd argue that he has a beak (if a very rounded one), considering that they color it as such in his cameo in The Thousand-Year Door! ...but, it's so goshdanged low-res in that game, that it's literally only obvious he has it at all in the Switch remake, so, we can't exactly blame you for missing on that. Camwoodstock-sigicon.png~Camwoodstock ( talk contribs ) Camwoodstock-sigicon2.png 23:45, February 16, 2026 (UTC)

I'd say his mouth shape is based on Baby Bowser's muzzle (as seen above). Though there's also a lot of chick influence here. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:48, February 17, 2026 (UTC)

On Jr. Troopa not having a shell, remember that Koopa shells are not a part of their bodies, which is consistent with Koopa Village dialogue in Paper Mario. Jr. Troopa not having a shell when he hasn’t even fully hatched from his egg is to be expected. Seandwalsh (talk) 09:50, February 18, 2026 (UTC)
