Clefts are burly rock monsters, often with spikes on their head. To defeat them, Mario should flip them over with an explosion, revealing their defenseless undersides. The player can also flip them with the Quake Hammer. Earth Tremor does not flip them, but if executed well enough, it can defeat them outright. Among other areas, Clefts inhabit Mt. Rugged, Gusty Gulch, Petal Meadows, Boggly Woods, Twilight Trail, and even the Moon. Mario encountered Clefts during his adventures in Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
In the first Paper Mario game, they were brown, but in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, they are gray; both these colorations coincide with those of their differing locations.

Notes
- A cleft is an indentation in one's chin, which, fittingly enough, Clefts themselves sport.
