Name

Even as a generic descriptor, if the subject's been called a "cannon" in-game, is that good enough to move it? Hello, I'm Time Turner. 20:19, 2 August 2017 (EDT)

I'd be all for merging this information with the simple cannon page, tbh, as there is already some information on this there. But I'll agree either way.    20:25, 2 August 2017 (EDT)
I agree too. -- TheFlameChomp (talk) 20:26, 2 August 2017 (EDT)
With merging it or changing the name? Hello, I'm Time Turner. 20:27, 2 August 2017 (EDT)
I would agree with merging it, as it has the same name and the cannon page already has some information on it. -- TheFlameChomp (talk) 20:29, 2 August 2017 (EDT)

Actually, for easy convenience, I might as well list every generic descriptor from this script, for easy access. It could be useful if we decide to not merge it. By far the most common term is "cannon", but beyond that...

  • Admiral Bobbery: "Harumph! Fahr Outpost, eh? Well, where's this marvelous moon cannon, hm? Let's begin by speaking with some of the locals, eh?"
  • Goldbob: "Hmm... Well, you've certainly shown me something, sir. So... I give my permission for you to activate the Fahr Outpost cannon."
  • Fahr Outpost Mayor: "General White! Is big bomb cannon ready?"
  • General White: "Hut! Leave it to me! Now, men! You know the drill! Load the big bomb cannon!"
  • Mayor: "It is time! Big bomb cannon: FIIIIRE!!!"

Hello, I'm Time Turner. 20:35, 2 August 2017 (EDT)

We could also call it the "big bomb cannon" :P It's called "Big Boom" in French and Italian, so that'd actually might work...    11:19, 3 August 2017 (EDT)
I've confirmed that it's called "Big Boum" in French and "Grande Boom" in Italian (which doesn't directly translate to "Big Boom", but my Italian's too rusty to properly translate it). They use capitalization and everything, so either of them definitely work as official names. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 11:40, 3 August 2017 (EDT)
From what (little) I know, "Grande" means "Large", so it still works. I'm not sure what's happening anymore, seems like we have several options:
  • Cannon (Fahr Outpost)
  • Merge to Cannon
  • Big bomb cannon (improper)
  • Big Boom (I guess?)
I think the best bets would be to merge with Cannon or move to "Big Boom Cannon" as that's about as close to official as we can get.    11:44, 3 August 2017 (EDT)
If we're moving the article, it would either be "Big Boum" or "Grande Boom". We use the original text for titles, and not translations. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 11:45, 3 August 2017 (EDT)
Oh, yeah. I'll support the move, but which do you think would be better? I'd go with Grande Boom, imo.    11:49, 3 August 2017 (EDT)
MarioWiki:Naming doesn't have a hierarchy for languages, so I think it's a matter of personal preference. I'm fine with Grande Boom. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 12:01, 3 August 2017 (EDT)
I think Grande Boom sounds good. -- TheFlameChomp (talk) 12:02, 3 August 2017 (EDT)

Why aren't we calling this "big bomb cannon"? That's the term I remember from the game. It's used by the mayor (twice), General White, and at least one random NPC in Fahr Outpost, so it's not like it's a one-off descriptive term. Just because it's not capitalized doesn't mean we shouldn't use it, just look at Wario Land II: giant snake, giant bee, giant spear man, etc. Not to mention fire jet, red diamond, spark pylon... the list goes on. What makes this any different? Seems like a better idea to me than using a foreign name that no one is going to recognize or search for.    21:32, 3 September 2018 (EDT)

we should really move this to 'big bomb cannon'. It appears to be the official name given that most characters refer to it as this. Trig - 20:31, November 9, 2019 (EST)

Yeah, someone already showed that three people referred to it as that in-game.  PinkYoshiFan  14:45, April 18, 2020 (EDT)
Really, though, the "not a 'proper' name" argument is invalid when it's referred to consistently by a generic name in the relevant language. In that case, the generic name should be treated as the name. Pretty sure they just call it "cannon" most of the time, with "big bomb cannon" being more of a faux-Russian-accent-ism, though that's just me. No reason for a random other language to get priority for simply capitalizing it. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:56, April 18, 2020 (EDT)
I support moving. --  Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 15:14, April 18, 2020 (EDT)
Should we go ahead and make a talk page proposal?  PinkYoshiFan  15:33, April 19, 2020 (EDT)
