Clefts are burly rock monsters, often with spikes on their head. They have high defense and high attack, making them one of the strongest enemies in the Paper Mario series. To defeat them, Mario should flip them over with an explosion, revealing their defenseless undersides. The player can also flip them with the Quake Hammer. Earth Tremor does not flip them, but if executed well enough, it will defeat them. Among other areas, Clefts inhabit Mt. Rugged, Gusty Gulch, Petal Meadows, Boggly Woods, Twilight Trail, and even the Moon. Mario encountered Clefts during his adventures in Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

In the first Paper Mario game, they were brown, but in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, they are gray.

  • Tattle: This is a Cleft. Clefts are pretty strong, so you'd better be careful. Their specialty is pretending to be rocks, so watch your step on the mountain. You'll get hurt if you jump on the spikes on their heads. You know, there's courage in running away sometimes...
