Variant of Lava Bubble

Blue Lava Bubbles[1][2] are enemies introduced in Super Princess Peach. They are blue-colored Lava Bubbles that appear in blue lava. They behave differently from their normal counterparts mostly of the time, but in some instances, they are only differentiated by their color.

History

Super Princess Peach

Blue Lava Bubbles make their first appearance in Super Princess Peach. They appear in rooms with blue lava and lanterns, where they will emerge from the former and then slowly chase Peach. Peach must lead them to the unlit lantern, as lighting all of them in a room will open up certain doorways. They first appear in Bowser's Villa 8-2 and reappear in Bowser's Villa 8-3, Bowser's Villa 8-5 and Bowser's Villa 8-8. Like unshelled Koopas, Teresa no Taigun, and Mihari, Blue Lava Bubble do not appear in the in-game glossary.

Super Mario series

Super Mario Galaxy

Blue Lava Bubbles called just Lava Bubbles[3][4] are enemies in Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port. Rather than hopping in and out from lava, they bounce along its surface and along the ground, following Mario or Luigi. They can only be defeated by shooting a Star Bit at them, wich makes them drop a coin. They initially appear during the third phase of King Kaliente's battle in the Good Egg Galaxy, where he spawns them around his arena. They later appear in Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor, appearing both in the stage itself and in the fight against the blackened King Kaliente, who spawns them sooner than before. Finally, they appear occasionally in the Melty Molten Galaxy, guarding a Silver Star in "Burning Tide" and guarding Star Chips in "Through the Meteor Storm".

Blue Lava Bubbles reappear with their current name in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They only appear in Boss Blitz Galaxy, in the fight against King Kaliente, where they retain the same function as in the previous game, appearing during the third phase of the fight.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Blue Lava Bubbles return in Super Mario 3D World and its Nintendo Switch port Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. They behave the same as their normal counterparts in the game, with the only difference being that they appear exclusively in blue lava. They first appear in the level Fort Fire Bros. and reappear in Broken Blue Bully Belt and Faster Fort Fire Bros.

Naming

Etymology

In the first Super Mario Galaxy, "Blue Lava bubbles" are the only type of Lava Bubbles in the game and their color is not specified in paratexts. "Normal" Lava Bubbles are reincorporated in Super Mario Galaxy 2, in which their color is denoted. They do not behave like the Lava Bubbles in previous or subsequent games. In Super Mario 3D World, the difference between Blue Lava Bubbles and "normal" ones is cosmetic but they are still recognized as distinct on the Mario Portal page for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. This is not followed on the page for the original Wii U game.
