Bolted blocks are colorful, rounded platforms with circular bolts in each of their corners. Usually they are a flat, plastic-like texture, but are sometimes depicted with diamond-shaped patterns filling them. They are a frequently recurring object in the Super Mario franchise, principally as iconography for the main Super Mario series. In 2D titles, they typically act as Semisolid Platforms, and are fully solid objects in 3D games.
History
Super Mario series
Super Mario Bros. 3
Bolted blocks feature prevalently in aboveground levels of Super Mario Bros. 3. They generally appear in tan, white, green, and light-blue colors. The White Blocks uniquely can be crouched on to drop the player into the level's background, behind the White Block. In World 8-1 black bolted blocks with white outlines appear, matching the level's wider aesthetic. Several desert levels in the game feature differently designed bolted blocks, which are all orange and have slightly smaller bolts. These bolted blocks are often stacked on top of one another into large pyramid structures.
