Proposals are the Super Mario Wiki Contributors' way of suggesting new features, removal of previously-added features, or policies that must be approved via consensus. They can be found on individual pages' corresponding talk pages, or on the Proposals page (this page). Here are some notable features of Proposals:

• Any autoconfirmed user can create a proposal or vote in one, but must have a reason for doing so.
• Proposals have a two week voting period by default, but can close early or be extended.
• Most proposals have their outcomes selected from a single set of options, but Poll Proposals have multiple subsets of options.
• To pass, a proposal must have one option approved by a majority of voters, including proposals with more than two options.
• Most proposals follow the same 4 basic structures, which can be found in copy-and-paste template form in the "How to" section.
• Contributors can discuss and plan new proposals before creating them on the main proposals talk page or the relevant talk page.
• Further technical details about proposals can be found in the Rules Section.

How to

If a contributor has an idea about improving the wiki or managing its community, but feels that they need community approval before acting upon that idea, they should make a proposal about it.

1. The contributor must identify a strong argument supporting their idea and be willing to discuss it in detail with other users, who may or may not vote on whether or not they think the idea should be implemented. Discussion is often started by a proposal submission, so discussion beforehand is optional.
2. The contributor must identify the correct location for their proposal:
   • Does it affect the entire wiki and/or wiki guidelines and policies? - Make a Main Proposal at the bottom of the Proposals page (this page).
   • Does it concern one specific page, a specific group of pages, or a specific template or module? - Make a Talk Page Proposal (TPP) on the relevant talk page.
   • Do multiple issues need to be discussed and voted on in the same proposal? - Make a Poll Proposal at the bottom of the Proposals page (this page) or the relevant talk page.
   • It is recommended that contributors copy and fill in the template for their Proposal from one of the sections below. (See: [show proposal formatting])
3. The contributor must include a detailed description of the proposed changes, making sure to include links to all relevant pages and/or writing guidelines. Contributors may link to a draft page to demonstrate their changes (such as a user sandbox).
4. The contributor should spread word about their proposal. Pages that would be massively affected by the proposal can be marked with a {{proposal notice}}. If the proposal is on a talk page, a link to it should be added to the Talk Page Proposals section of this page. Linking to a proposal in public forums is allowed, but soliciting votes is not. Contributors should refer to the Courtesy Policy on this matter.

Once voting has concluded, wiki staff or a contributor will mark the proposal as closed. Main Proposals will be moved from this page to one of the archives. Proposals that pass will be moved to the Unimplemented Proposals section, and should be acted upon in a timely manner by the original proposer (if they are able).

Bear in mind that the proposal's original contributor is typically responsible for implementing the changes discussed in the proposal. Contributors who will need help from wiki staff should inform them as soon as possible, preferably before voting concludes.

Main Proposal Formatting

Copy and paste the formatting below to get started; username and the proposal deadline will automatically be substituted when the page is saved. Update the bracketed variables with actual information, and be sure to replace the whole variable including the square brackets (ie. "[insert info here]" becomes "This is the inserted information", not "[This is the inserted information]"). Proposals presenting multiple alternative courses of action can have more than two voting options, but the objective(s) of each voting option must be clearly defined. Such options should also be kept to a minimum, and if something comes up in the comments, the proposal can be amended as necessary.

After submitting, autoconfirmed users will immediately be able to vote on the proposal. Remember that contributors can also vote on proposals they created.

To vote for an option, contributors insert #{{user|[username here]}} at the bottom of the option of their choice, making sure to include a valid reason for their vote directly after that tag (on the same line). Contributors who wish to echo the sentiment of the original proposal can simply write "Per proposal", or to agree with another, "Per [that contributor]".

Poll Proposal Formatting

As an alternative to the basic proposal format, users may choose to create a poll proposal when one larger issue can be broken down into multiple subissues that can be resolved independently of each other. Poll proposals concerning multiple pages must have good justification for using the poll proposal format rather than individual talk page proposals or else will be canceled (for example, in the case of the princesses poll proposal, there are valid consistency concerns which make it worthwhile to consider these three articles simultaneously, but for routine article size splits, there is no need to abandon using standard TPPs for each).

In a poll proposal, each option is essentially its own mini-proposal with a deadline and suboption headings. A poll proposal can have a maximum of 15 options, and the rules above apply to each option as if it were its own proposal: users may vote on any number of options they wish, and individual options may close early or be extended separately from the rest. If an option fails to achieve quorum or reach a consensus after three extensions, then the status quo wins for that option by default. If all options fail, then nothing will be done.

For the purposes of the ongoing proposals list, a poll proposal's deadline is the latest deadline of any ongoing option(s). A poll proposal is archived after all of its options have settled, and it is listed as one single proposal in the archive. It is considered to have "passed" if one or more options were approved by voters (resulting in a change from the status quo), and it is considered to have "failed" if all options were rejected by voters and/or no change in the status quo was made.

Talk Page Proposal Formatting

Proposals concerning a single page or a limited group of pages are held on the most relevant talk page regarding the matter. All of the above proposal rules also apply to talk page proposals. Place {{TPP}} under the section's heading, and once the proposal is over, replace the template with {{settled TPP}}. Proposals dealing with a large amount of splits, merges, or deletions across the wiki should still be held on this page.

All active talk page proposals must be listed below (Talk page propsals Section) in chronological order (new proposals go at the bottom) using {{ongoing TPP}}. Include a brief description of the proposal while also mentioning any pages affected by it, a link to the talk page housing the discussion, the proposal author(s), and the deadline. If the proposal involves a page that is not yet made, use {{fake link}} to communicate its title in the description. Linking to pages not directly involved in the talk page proposal is not recommended, as it clutters the list with unnecessary links.

Proposal Rules

Basics

1. Users: Only autoconfirmed users may create or vote on proposals. Proposals can be created by one user or co-authored by two users.
2. Limit: A given user may author/co-author a maximum of five total ongoing/unimplemented proposals. Any new proposals over this limit will be immediately canceled.
3. Commenting: Anyone is free to comment on proposals (provided that the page's protection level allows them to edit).
4. Duration: Proposals conclude at the end of the day (23:59) two weeks after voting starts (all times UTC). Some proposals are subject to early closure or extension, and at most may last 5 weeks.
   • For example, if a proposal is added at any time on Monday, August 1, 2011, the voting starts immediately and the deadline is two weeks later on Monday, August 15, at 23:59 (UTC).
5. Repeal Period: Proposals cannot contradict an already ongoing proposal or overturn the decision of a previous proposal that concluded less than four weeks (28 days) ago.
6. Status Quo: Proposals must have a status quo option (e.g. "Oppose", "Do nothing") unless the status quo itself violates policy.

Voting

1. Voting: Users may vote for more than one option, but they may not vote for every option available. Keep in mind that we use approval voting, so all of a user's votes count equally regardless of preferred order.
2. Vote Reasoning: Every vote should have a strong, sensible reason accompanying it. Agreeing with a previously mentioned reason given by another user is acceptable (including "per" votes), but tangential comments, heavy sarcasm, and other misleading or irrelevant quips are just as invalid as providing no reason at all.
3. Vote Contesting: Users who feel that certain votes were cast in bad faith or which truly have no merit can address the votes in the comments section. Users can ask a voter to clarify their position, point out mistakes or flaws in their arguments, or call for the outright removal of the vote if it lacks sufficient reasoning. Users may not remove or alter the content of anyone else's votes. Voters can remove or rewrite their own vote(s) at any time, but the final decision to remove another user's vote lies solely with the wiki staff.
   • Users can also use the comments section to bring up any concerns or mistakes in regards to the proposal itself. In such cases, it's important the proposer addresses any concerns raised as soon as possible. Even if the supporting side might be winning by a wide margin, that should be no reason for such questions to be left unanswered. They may point out any missing details that might have been overlooked by the proposer, so it's a good idea as the proposer to check them frequently to achieve the most accurate outcome possible.
4. User Blocking: If a user makes a vote and is subsequently blocked for any amount of time, their vote is removed. However, if the block ends before the proposal ends, then the user in question holds the right to re-cast their vote. If a proposer is blocked, their vote is removed and "(blocked)" is added next to their name in the "Proposer:" line of the proposal, which runs until its deadline as normal. If the proposal passes, it falls to the supporters of the idea to enact any changes in a timely manner.
5. Early Close: If one week before a proposal's initial deadline, the first place option is ahead of the second place option by eight or more votes and the first place option has at least 80% approval, then the proposal concludes early. Wiki staff may tag a proposal with "Do not close early" at any time to prevent an early close, if needed.
   • Tag the proposal with {{early notice}} if it is on track for an early close. Use {{proposal check|early=yes}} to perform the check.

Extensions

1. No Quorum: Any proposal where none of the options have at least four votes will be extended for another week. If after three extensions, no options have at least four votes, the proposal will be listed as "NO QUORUM". The original proposer then has the option to relist said proposal to generate more discussion.
2. Tie: If a proposal reaches its deadline and there is a tie for first place, then the proposal is extended for another week. A tie is defined by the Threshold, and may end up not being an exact equality.
3. Threshold: If a proposal reaches its deadline and the first place option is ahead of the second place option by three or more votes, then the first place option must have over 50% approval to win. If the margin is only one or two votes, then the first place option must have at least 60% approval to win. If the required approval threshold is not met, then the proposal is extended for another week.
   • Use {{proposal check}} to automate this calculation; see the template page for usage instructions and examples.
4. Extension Limit: Proposals can be extended a maximum of three times. If a consensus has not been reached by the fourth deadline, then the proposal fails and cannot be re-proposed until at least four weeks after the last deadline.

Resolution

1. Aftermath: After a proposal passes, it is added to the appropriate list of "unimplemented proposals" below and is removed once it has been sufficiently implemented.
2. Responsibility: The original proposer must take action accordingly if the outcome of the proposal dictates it. If it requires the help of an administrator, the proposer should ask for that help. Proposals that result in changes to policy pages or general guidelines must be cited accordingly.
3. Archival: All proposals are archived. Please note that canceled proposals must also be archived, including their date of cancellation.

Cancellation

1. Self-Cancel or Rewrite: Proposals can only be rewritten or canceled by their proposer within the first four days of their creation. If a proposer cancels their own proposal, they must provide a reason and wait three days before submitting any new proposal.
   • A proposer cannot cancel their proposal and then implement it anyway. Only wiki staff can cancel a proposal and immediately put it into effect.
2. Request Cancel: Proposers can request their proposal be canceled by a wiki staff member after the self-cancellation cutoff, but they must provide a valid reason for doing so. In most cases, the proposal should simply run its course.
3. Staff Privilege: If the wiki staff deem a proposal unnecessary or potentially detrimental to the upkeep of the Super Mario Wiki, they have the right to cancel it at any time. Conversely, the staff may opt to cancel a proposal and have it immediately be put into effect, if the changes in question did not require proposal in the first place (such as adding obviously wanted but missing information, or creating a page that falls perfectly within page creation guidelines).

Disallowed proposals

1. General Improvements: Unless there is major disagreement about whether certain content should be included, there should not be proposals about creating, expanding, rewriting, or otherwise fixing up pages. To organize efforts about improving articles on neglected or completely missing subjects, consider setting up a collaboration thread on the forums. Alternatively, a PipeProject can be founded, which does require a proposal.
2. Rank Proposals: Proposals cannot be made about promotions and demotions. Staff changes are discussed internally and carried out by the bureaucrats.
3. No Joke Proposals. Proposals are serious wiki matters and should be handled professionally. Joke proposals will be deleted on sight.
