Name?[edit]

Officially named?Knife (talk) 00:18, 20 October 2009 (EDT)

The name is from the response of an E-Mail I wrote to Nintendo of America some time ago. Here's a link. - Gabumon from the Digimon franchise Gabumon(talk) 00:24, 20 October 2009 (EDT)

Pogo Guy[edit]

Was that capitalized? Or is it a case like red beastie (Futamogu), lazy blue creature (Cactus Slime), pincer enemy (Omodonmeka), and pouncing pincer (also Omodonmeka), where it's lowercase and generic? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 19:16, 12 October 2017 (EDT)

From Nintendo Power Volume 106:
  • "Some new enemies like Pogo Guy show up in the castle to give Wario a warm welcome. Expect lots of jumps and breakthroughs. You’ll also meet ghosts for the first time. To recover from being Zombie Wario, step into the shafts of light." - pg. 69, next to 5.2 STORM THE CASTLE
  • "After stomping Pogo Guy, carry him up to the middle ledge, then have him bounce you to the top where you can get the coins." - pg. 71, under REACHING THE HEIGHTS (continued from 5.4 FIND THE HIDDEN DOOR on pg. 70)
The latter is in a text box that specifically points to this enemy in the room with several 10 Gold Coins above the breakable blocks. It's true that it obviously wields a hammer rather than a pogo stick, but it turns Wario into Bouncy Wario, so the name still works out that way. As a side note, there is something else that corroborates with one of the names in the e-mail response. However...
  • "Keep stomping on Spear Guy’s head or drop on him from above. Wario has nothing to fear." - pg. 67, under NOTHING TO SPEAR (continued from 3.2 DEFEAT THE GIANT SPEAR MAN on pg. 66)
...it points to the boss door and definitely refers to the giant spear man, not Pirate Goom as previously thought (although in the e-mail response, it was listed as "Spear guy"). LinkTheLefty (talk) 08:30, 13 October 2017 (EDT)

Rename to Pogo Guy[edit]

rename to "Pogo Guy" but keep "Ape" 4-1-0
See above. Nintendo Power consistently refers to this enemy as Pogo Guy instead of Ape. While we have it on good word that Ape was an enemy name, we're not 100% certain if it refers to this enemy, nor is the name seen in any other material. There are several instances of game sprites being misread, such as referring to Shy Guys as "zombies" or Flames as "dragons". It's just as possible that someone misinterpreted, for instance, Gaugau as an ape. Additionally, Nintendo Power does share several e-mail names such as penguin and Spear Guy, and while the latter was initially assumed to be Pirate Goom, Nintendo Power reveals in context that it's supposed to be the giant spear man. The e-mail names are usually self-explanatory, but as it's also not the only ape enemy in the game (see Grunt). Overall, I think Pogo Guy is the name that should be used here, with the "pogo" in question being its ability to transform Wario into Bouncy Wario. I've included two ways to do this: the first simply prioritizes Pogo Guy over Ape while mentioning the latter, and the second also scrubs direct mention of Ape on the article but leaves it as a redirect ala Snap Claw.

Keep as Ape[edit]

Comments[edit]

I have a few questions:

  • How would "Grunt" be a possibility for being called "Ape" in the e-mail if "Grunt" is a name used for the Grunt enemy in the instruction booklet?
  • Why does the "Zombie" word link to Mario Mania?
  • When were Shy Guys ever in the Wario Land series, or referred to as Zombies for the matter?
  • Why would scrubbing "Ape" from the article be similar to Snap Claw, if Snap Claw/Snapjaw are extremely similar names and Pogo Guy/Ape are completely different names?
  • If "Spear Guy" is the official name for the "giant spear man", why don't we move the page there if the latter reads like a description & is in all caps while the former is used as a name and is properly capitalized?

I'm neutral for now, but I'm just a little confused. Somethingone (talk) 17:05, March 15, 2022 (EDT)

Responding in numerical order: 1) That's not what I was saying, but there is the distinct possibility that the same enemy was listed twice under different names, 2&3) It's just a quick example I had off the top of my head of a NoA person at around the era misreading the intended game sprites, as page 14 of Mario Mania notoriously refers to Shy Guys as "wandering zombies" (most likely misinterpreting the masks as skulls) when that was never the case anywhere else; Pure Water would've worked on them in Super Mario RPG, Zombie Guys were introduced as a variant in Yoshi's Crafted World, etc. Though if you want another example from the same game, there's also a reference to Captain Syrup's Pirate Gooms as "beetles", 4) What they have in common is that both names originated from web content and neither were directly attributed to a specific enemy (notice how Snap Claw could easily work as a name for Cuttacutta), 5) Several reasons, mainly that Spear Guy much more commonly refers to another subject, and giant spear man is a near-direct translation of its Japanese name. I'll add one more thing for the record: magazines and web content fall under the same Naming heirarchy, but guides are higher, and Nintendo Power magazine's coverage can be considered a guide in itself.
