Move to 3 Raceways/Wario Stadium[edit]

Move 10-1
This is the actual original name of the theme on Mario Kart 64 Race Tracks. Using Smash as the name source is not the best choice here, since Luigi Raceway isn't the only course this theme plays on. It leads to strange sentences like "'Luigi Raceway' plays on Wario Stadium", which feels like the wrong way to go about it.

- DryKirby64 (talk) Per above.
- PrincessPeachFan (talk) Per.
- EvieMaybe (talk) the "most recent name" rule doesn't work as well for songs, which are often rearranged and renamed to suit their new context. if a game came out where mario characters play the role of fairytale characters, and luigi was known as merely "The Knight", we wouldn't move Luigi to The Knight because that's easy to understand as not representative of the character. same thing goes for songs
- Waluigi Time (talk) Luigi Raceway is not the name of the original theme, it's the name of the Smash arrangement. This would be consistent with the rest of our music articles.
- TomAndTheCats (talk) Per proposal.
- Wilben (talk) Until Mario Kart 64's soundtrack gets released on the Nintendo Music app, using the name given on the Mario Kart 64 Race Tracks soundtrack album makes perfect sense to me. I don't think the name being "clunky" is an issue, as themes like P Switch BGM / Toad's House and Slot Game BGM / Memory Game BGM exist.
- Tails777 (talk) Per EvieMaybe and my comments here. Context is arguably more important here than it is for something like the renaming of a race track or mini-game. That's why I believe song names should at the very least use their original appearance as the name for the article because that's the original context for the song and since music can be used and played in situations that have nothing to do with the original theme (such as the Character Select theme from Super Mario Bros. 2 being used for a slot machine mini-game in Super Mario 3D World), it would make things vastly confusing if we applied the "most recent name" policy here.
- Arend (talk) Personally, I think "3 Raceways & Wario Stadium" is a stupid name, but it IS the name that the soundtrack uses for it. Crossing fingers that Nintendo Music will use something better, but for now, this is the more logical choice.

Oppose[edit]
- Hewer (talk) More recent and in-game name, no reason for it not to take priority. And the "original" name is so clunky that I'd argue "3 Raceways/Wario Stadium plays on Wario Stadium" is a much stranger sentence than "Luigi Raceway plays on Wario Stadium". I personally don't really get what's wrong with the latter, it's just a reflection of the fact that the theme plays on multiple courses. We'd also say "Waluigi Pinball plays on Wario Stadium".
Comments[edit]
Actually, according to Nintendo Music, the offical name is either N64 Royal Raceway or N64 Luigi Raceway. PrincessPeachFan (talk) 09:06, June 10, 2025 (EDT)
@Hewer: The issue is that this "most recent and in-game name" is for a rearrangement of the original theme, not the actual original theme. I understand that DS Waluigi Pinball (theme) is named that because it has a more complicated situation (in that both "DS Wario Stadium" and "DS Waluigi Pinball" are official names, and it's just generally more identifiable as Waluigi Pinball), but using arrangement names when the originals exist sets a bad precedent. For example, "Break Time! Raise the Stage" is a more recent official name than "Ground BGM"; why don't we use that? If we want in-game names, "Super Mario 2007" is a more recent in-game name (thanks to Super Mario 3D All-Stars) than "Ground BGM", which has never been used in a game. And the arrangements in Smash are "Ground Theme", so why not use that? The needs for music titles are more complex than recency and in-game appearance; representing the original theme's name is also important. While I admit "'3 Raceways/Wario Stadium' plays on Wario Stadium" is still a little strange, it at least accurately reflects that the theme plays on more than one course, and certainly clunky music titles aren't strange to the Mario series (we have "Luigi Circuit/Mario Circuit" as well). - I'll admit that our current naming rules for music are a bit messy and inconsistent. But naming pages using titles that were only used for rearrangements rather than the original isn't unheard of, like GCN Yoshi Circuit, SNES Rainbow Road, and indeed, DS Waluigi Pinball. Actually, maybe calling this "N64 Royal Raceway" would be more consistent. Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 12:35, June 10, 2025 (EDT)
- I'm admittedly not in the position to make the strongest case for this, but this page felt like the most clear-cut case for a move compared to the others. There are so many named "Rainbow Road" that any kind of disambiguation is preferable, and "DS Waluigi Pinball" and "GCN Yoshi Circuit" don't have official names for their original versions. This track already has a distinct name, and using the original album's name creates consistency with themes such as e.g. "DK Island Swing" rather than "Jungle Level". That's just my opinion, anyway! @EvieMaybe: Are you suggesting that "Luigi Raceway" is not a suitable or representative name for the track that plays on Luigi Raceway? Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 12:37, June 10, 2025 (EDT)
- @Hewer: The Mario Kart 8 and Deluxe rearrangement is called N64 Royal Raceway. PrincessPeachFan (talk) 21:04, June 10, 2025 (EDT)
- no, i'm saying "Luigi Raceway" is not a suitable or representative name for the track that plays on Luigi Raceway, Mario Raceway, Royal Raceway and Wario Stadium —

personally I think we should actually rename it to the english name used on the original japanese release. just "circuit", as god intended SGoW(Talk)

- I would normally agree to this, but I think the preference is to prioritize native English-language sources whenever possible DryKirby64 (talk) 00:08, June 13, 2025 (EDT)
@Wilben: My calling the proposed name "clunky" wasn't really supposed to be an argument for why we shouldn't use it, I was just responding to the proposal's argument that the current name results in "strange sentences". Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 14:06, June 12, 2025 (EDT)
What now?[edit]
I've heard that this theme appears four separate times in the MK64 playlist on Nintendo Music (once for each track). Are we gonna change the page's name again? TomAndTheCats (talk) 21:53, July 14, 2025 (EDT)
- The move was definitely too hasty. It's still being discussed on the Discord, and consensus there was leaning towards keeping it at "3 Raceways/Wario Stadium" because of the difficult naming situation. DryKirby64 (talk) 22:49, July 14, 2025 (EDT)
- I think it's fair to say that the app treats Luigi Raceway as the "primary" name for the track out of the four given, as it's the one mentioned in the recent highlights section and included in the "Top tracks" and "Selects" playlists. And since our naming policy tells us that Nintendo Music takes priority over everything else for names of music, I think it's fine as it is. Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 06:46, July 15, 2025 (EDT)
- I fully agree with Hewer here. It also helps that the theme has only been referred to as "Luigi Raceway" or some variant of it (such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Sound Test referring to it as "Luigi Circuit") outside of the Mario Kart series. Wilben (talk) 12:06, July 15, 2025 (EDT)
- I've created a proposal to decide how to handle this, since I think it will have implications for other articles. I can see the case for either title. DryKirby64 (talk) 12:10, July 15, 2025 (EDT)
