  • Where exactly is the evidence that Cactus King and Ghastly King are the same? They look identical, but was it ever officially stated? -- Sir Grodus
    • They aren't the same, there is no evidence, besides how similar they look.Knife (talk) 17:25, 26 July 2007 (EDT)
      • They are the same: Both of them have the same name in Japan: Final Kong. --Tailikku1 (talk) 09:36, 29 October 2014 (EDT)

Hey, um... is this Ghastly King or some other boss?Donkey Kong prepares to fight Dread KongLink's Shadow 12:36, 14 June 2008 (EDT)

That's Dread Kong, not Ghastly King. -- Cyberlink420 20:59, 5 October 2008 (EDT)

If Cactus King and Ghastly King are both valid names, why was Ghastly chosen over Cactus? Not necessarily saying we should rename the page yet, but curious on how this decision was reached. Technetium (talk) 09:17, May 26, 2025 (EDT)

He's called "Final Kong" in Japan in both boss fights. "Cactus King" was a flub by the localization. PrincessPeachFan (talk) 12:30, May 26, 2025 (EDT)
Yeah but "Ghastly" isn't exactly a direct translation of "Final" either. More fitting for sure, though (as much as I love cacti...) Nintendo101 also made a point on the wiki Discord that Cactus King may be more familiar to players than Ghastly King since that name is encountered earlier in the game. Technetium (talk) 12:44, May 26, 2025 (EDT)
So are those the literal only two instances of the boss being named in-game? Is it an exact 50-50 between them? — Lady Sophie Wiggler Sophie.png (T|C) 16:16, June 1, 2025 (EDT)
In the English version, the levels are "VS. Cactus King" and "VS. Ghastly King" while in the Japanese version they are both Hao kaorin (The conqueror descends). PrincessPeachFan (talk) 12:36, June 2, 2025 (EDT)
I kind of think "Cactus King" is supposed to be his name, as "Ghastly King" only shows up the second time, implying it's his secondary, more ghostly form (that all I can gather though, there's nothing really "ghastly" or "spooky" about him at all). ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 13:14, June 2, 2025 (EDT)
The fact that he's called Final Kong in Japan indicates that he's just the same guy and there's nothing ghostly about him the second time. PrincessPeachFan (talk) 09:01, June 4, 2025 (EDT)
I never said they weren't the same guy AND I already noted there's nothing ghostly about him despite the name "Ghastly King". What's the point of saying this? ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 09:41, June 4, 2025 (EDT)
