Should we change "North America" and "Australia" to "Americas" and "Oceania" respectively?[edit]

I'm asking this due to the reasons shown below:

North America: While Nintendo neglected Brazil, due to its massive import taxes, they still sell their products there (even though they release them in a more slower rate there). I've even found more Brazilian people than Greek people in online games and Miiverse. A lot more.

Australia: Excuse me, but where is New Zealand? New Zealand is NOT part of the Australia region. Plus, Oceania has about 14 countries, so yeah. Gold Luigi (talk) 07:48, 12 July 2017 (EDT)

We've decided to keep the Americas separate for regional aspects, but we will go through pages and mark Australia + New Zealand "Oceania" when applicable, like when release dates between the two match up. We'll have to adjust some things like templates, but you are free to help with that in article context if you feel like it. Sorry for the wait :) Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:30, 14 July 2017 (EDT)
Thanks. New Zealand ALWAYS gets the same Nintendo content and release dates as Australia; clicking on New Zealand on Nintendo Country Selector will even redirect you to the Australian site. Just pay close attention to the link after clicking New Zealand. So I think you'll need to replace "Australia" with "Oceania" everywhewre it says "Australia". Also, will North America still be called "North America"? I really did not understand the part where you said you'll keep the Americas seperate for regional aspects. Gold Luigi (talk) 04:01, 15 July 2017 (EDT)
Yeah, we're leaving North America and South America as is. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:14, 15 July 2017 (EDT)
Sorry for late reply, but it just came to my head! Are you going to announce the change sometime? If so, will you tell them about the change in other wikis too? Gold Luigi (talk) 18:40, 28 July 2017 (EDT)
I don't think we need to. And what other wikis are you talking about? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:21, 28 July 2017 (EDT)
Well, I'm talking about wikis like Nookipedia, Donkey Kong Wiki, Zelda Wiki, etc., maybe even Wikipedia. They don't know about the change. And I think you should announce it, since some people won't know why we did this change. Gold Luigi (talk) 05:28, 29 July 2017 (EDT)

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I decided to change "Oceania" back to "Australia", since I believe that something just doesn't feel right when I see/say "Oceania". However, I will keep "Oceania" in Australia's flag description, in order to reflect the release dates of Australia. (I also did a similar thing on North America, Europe, and Hong Kong. Check their flag description if you don't know what I mean.) Gold Luigi (talk) 08:45, 18 December 2017 (EST) NOTE: I still haven't finished the revert. However, I do plan to continue it. If you want to help me, go ahead.

After you made a big deal about changing it? Why? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:36, 18 December 2017 (EST)
Yeah. I honestly should be ashamed for myself for even starting such a pointless, and I mean, POINTLESS question. Don't worry though. I 'm still OK, and I can still handle the edit if you like. Gold Luigi (talk) 12:19, 18 December 2017 (EST)
Seems pointless now to switch it all back. Just leave it how it is. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 12:23, 18 December 2017 (EST)
Nah, it's OK. Plus, most people just say "Australia/New Zealand" instead of "Oceania" or just "Australia" and other times they don't even mention Oceania at all, similar to South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Could you also check the latest question I made yesterday? I really can't stand seeing Chinese occupying the same spot all the time, as it makes it harder for some people, including me, to read the Chinese names. Gold Luigi (talk) 12:36, 18 December 2017 (EST)
Point is, the change from Australia to Oceania was discussed last time, as your point was "Australia" shouldn't be the term to cover all releases in the Oceania region, which we agreed to. Now you want to change it back just...because? If you have a good reason to do this, I'm not seeing it. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 12:40, 18 December 2017 (EST)
Because most people say "Australia" rather than "Oceania". These people will understand the "Oceania" but will find its use kind of odd now that they say "Australia". Gold Luigi (talk) 15:05, 18 December 2017 (EST)
Could you please stop reverting these changes I did? I told you, the majority of the video gaming community says "Australia/New Zealand", "Australia", or they never mention it. Super Mario Wiki is a fanmade wiki that was made by gaming fans, so I want for it to be fulfill the conditions for the majority. Gold Luigi (talk) 17:43, 18 December 2017 (EST)
This was discussed last time, it needs to be discussed again. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:44, 18 December 2017 (EST)
And how can I do that? Gold Luigi (talk) 18:00, 18 December 2017 (EST)
The staff will discuss it, I meant. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:01, 18 December 2017 (EST)
You mean that I should contact an admin if I want to discuss it again? Gold Luigi (talk) 18:03, 18 December 2017 (EST)
No I brought it up already. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:08, 18 December 2017 (EST)
  • sigh* Guess never mind. I'll just stick with "Oceania", like you told me before. Gold Luigi (talk) 07:41, 19 December 2017 (EST)

Can you add a portuguese wiki[edit]

I want to know how can I translate the Mario Wiki to portuguese. There are many brazilians fans and they can't obtain knowlege if they don't speak english. Please, can any moderator help me?

OBS: I will translate as I can

Hello. Unfortunately, I don't believe there is a Portuguese version of the wiki made. Sometimes we have Portuguese names listed in the "Names in other languages" section on some pages, though. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 12:17, 7 September 2017 (EDT)

CAPTCHA[edit]

Why the CAPTCHA is slower than on most websites? 83.28.185.195 07:29, 10 September 2017 (EDT)

How do you cite sources?[edit]

I am rather ashamed to admit that I have been around for half a year and I don't know how to cite sources. Can someone link me to a tutorial page? -YFJ (talk · edits) 23:51, 19 November 2017 (EST)

The process is explained on MarioWiki:Citations. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 23:52, 19 November 2017 (EST)

How to change from .jpg to .png?[edit]

So I uploaded this image in .jpg format, and then I recaptured it in .png format. However, the system won't let me change the file type! How do I change it? Is it even possible? -YFJ (talk · edits) 13:15, 25 November 2017 (EST)

According to this policy, it is against the rules to convert a JPG file to a PNG file anyways. I'd suggest reading more about it on that page. LuigiMaster123Icon.png LuigiMaster123 13:18, 25 November 2017 (EST)
It's against the rules to directly convert an image from .jpg to .png. It's not against the rules to replace an old .jpg image with a new .png image. However, if you want to upload a file in a different format, it must be uploaded as an entirely separate file. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 13:20, 25 November 2017 (EST)
I didn't use a file converter; I just retook the screenshot. But I have to upload an entirely new file? I guess I shouldn't worry about it too much. -YFJ (talk · edits) 13:23, 25 November 2017 (EST)
You cannot change file extensions on MarioWiki for the same file. If you want to use a different format, upload a separate file with the different format you like. BabyLuigiFire.png(T|C) 13:58, 25 November 2017 (EST)

Gamepedia[edit]

Hello, I have been wondering, if this wiki will ever change their host to Gamepedia as the ZeldaWiki. It would be great but this is not my decision. ThaumicTom (talk) 05:32, 7 December 2017 (EST)

After dealing with the various 500 errors Gamepedia has to offer, an individual host is much better than a collective, imo. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:39, 7 December 2017 (EST)
You should ask porplemontage (talk) this as he's the one who deals with this type of stuff BabyLuigiFire.png(T|C) 14:04, 7 December 2017 (EST)

Can you separate Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese instead of putting them in the same place?[edit]

I believe that Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese being in the same place in the "Names in other languages" section makes it harder to read their names, especially if they're different from each other. Could you please make them separate in a similar way you separated the European and American variants of the French, Spanish, and Portuguese languages? Gold Luigi (talk) 18:53, 16 December 2017 (EST)

I think that's a good idea. Are they even localized in the same areas, because sometimes, their simplified variants are different. BabyLuigiFire.png(T|C) 15:27, 18 December 2017 (EST)
Yes. Example:

Names in other languages[edit]

Language Name Meaning
Chinese 新庫巴市 (Traditional)
Xīn Kùbā Shì
新酷霸王市 (Simplified)
Xīn Kùbàwáng Shì
New Koopa City

That's how we currently separate the Traditional and Simplified variants of the Chinese language. And Neo Bowser City's Simplified Chinese writing looks so different compared to the Traditional Chinese writing, despite sharing the same name. Gold Luigi (talk) 16:11, 18 December 2017 (EST)

Good catch; we already do this for Spanish/French/Portuguese regoinal differences, so why don't we do the same for Chinese dialect differences? MLPJToadetteWink.gif ToadettetheAchiever 16:19, 18 December 2017 (EST)
Exactly. By the way, which Chinese dialect should be put first in the list? Traditional Chinese or Simplified Chinese? To be fair, I'm not really sure. Gold Luigi (talk) 16:37, 18 December 2017 (EST)
From what I remember, when I took Chinese in high school, they made me memorize traditional and traditional is always listed first in the books. BabyLuigiFire.png(T|C) 17:07, 18 December 2017 (EST)

Fonts in signatures[edit]

Can I use fonts in my sig without personal images? If so, how? -YFJ (talk · edits) 20:40, 26 December 2017 (EST)

Yeah, you would type it like this. More info here. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:43, 26 December 2017 (EST)
I have a Mario font (“New Super Mario Font U”) on my computer. Would it be possible to use that without a PI? -YFJ (talk · edits) 00:04, 27 December 2017 (EST)
I doubt it. It has to be a font recognized by the database I think, so everyone's device can read it. You can try putting in the name of your font into the span style, but I don't think anything will happen. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:46, 14 January 2018 (EST)

Upload several files at once[edit]

I'm trying to upload a lot of files. Is there a way to speed up the process? Is there a way to upload fifteen files at once? Thanks! -YFJ (talk · edits) 03:03, 14 January 2018 (EST)

Sigh out[edit]

Dear people,

I'm very sorry, but I want to sigh out. I couldn't see any posibility to do that. How can I do that?

-Whomp King

I'm assuming you mean "sign out". There is a "log out" link at the top-right of the desktop page, or in the side menu on mobile. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:09, 31 January 2018 (EST)

No, I meant sigh out. Erase my account.

I've...never heard of that phrase. Anyway, since you don't have a userpage and the only edits you've made are to this page, there's no reason to delete your account. Scramble your password if you want to. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:17, 31 January 2018 (EST)

Yeah, again: I'm sorry. It's just... I don't do anything with my profile. So I can only change my password?

Yep, input a random string of garble. Just be sure it's what you want to do. You may want to come back at a later date. You can just leave your profile alone for now and came back to the wiki whenever. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:26, 31 January 2018 (EST)

Alright. Then I'll just forget about my account for now. Thanks anyway for your help. Perhaps, I'll come back again someday.

Can I get e-mail notifications when there are new nintendo/mario news?[edit]

Hi.

I would like to get e-mail notifications whenever there are updates to the Nintendo/Mario-news section on the front page. Is this possible?
The preceding unsigned comment was added by CurvatureOfBetrayal (talk).

Yes, actually. Provided you have your preferences set up to send you notifications, go to Template:News and click the "watch" tab at the top. Every time the template is changed, you will get an email notification. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 12:49, 4 February 2018 (EST)
To elaborate on what Alex said, here are some step-by-step instructions:
Step 1: Go to your user preferences.
Step 2: Click the "User profile" tab.
Step 3: Make sure an email address is registered with your account.
Step 4: Make sure "Email me when a page or a file on my watchlist is changed" is checked. Remember that this emails you when ANY watched page/file is changed.
Step 5: Go to Template:News.
Step 6: Click the "watch" button at the top of the page.
Step 7: Set up your device to send you email notifications.
Step 8: Wait for an email.
I hope this helped! -YFJ (talk · edits) 18:27, 4 February 2018 (EST)

Something I've always wondered[edit]

Why does the Wiki have full coverage of the Donkey Kong series when there's already the DKWiki? RickTommy (talk) 03:05, 8 September 2018 (EDT)

As far as I know, the DK Wiki was created after the Super Mario Wiki to cover all of the DK content which was being covered on the Super Mario Wiki at the time. I think Yoshi and Wario Wikis were also made, however they have since been deleted as much of the content was copied directly from the Super Mario Wiki, which still had the best coverage of the series. DK Wiki is fairly similar, but it's lasted longer as it has more original content. Either way, it's currently being merged back here for the same reason - too many directly copied pages and generally better coverage here. I'm not 100% sure on all of those facts, but I hope that answers your question. :) BBQ Turtle (talk) 03:33, 8 September 2018 (EDT)
DKWiki's currently in the process of being merged with the Super Mario Wiki, so this question's kind of moot :P But yeah, what BBQ Turtle said. DKWiki just proved more popular during that time. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 14:34, 18 October 2018 (EDT)

Can you feature a page that's been unfeatured? Green Luigi (talk) 20:08, 24 April 2019 (CDT) I was wondering if a featured page that's been unfeatured can be featured again or not

Current Did You Know section on the Main page[edit]

I wasn't sure where to mention then so I guess I'll put it here, the current Did You Know section states "Mario Party 2 and Mario Party DS are the only installments in the Mario Party series to be released on the Virtual Console" although I'm pretty sure Mario Party Advance was also released on the VC. Just wanted to bring this up. Emario407 (talk) 20:00, 4 December 2018 (EST)

Will MarioWiki ever get a visual editor?[edit]

I have been on this wiki since 2017, but I’m still not the best with MediaWiki syntax. Over at Wikipedia, I mainly use the visual editor. It’s a lot easier to understand for a beginner like me, and I think it will help quite a lot of people. So, do you think MarioWiki will ever get a visual editor like the one Wikipedia has? Combine Spanish (NOA) and (NOE) if the information is the same or not?[edit]

Gallery[edit]

So, how many images should be on a page before a seprate gallery page should be made??? [-]€40 vv@(talk · edits)Hyperluigi.gif 15:48, May 24, 2019 (EDT)

There is not really a specific amount. MarioWiki:Galleries does however say: " If all the images can be included in the subject's main page without creating an excessively long gallery section, a separate page is unnecessary." Doomhiker (talk)Topmini.png 15:55, May 24, 2019 (EDT)
Well... the Mario Kart Tour gallery is too big... [-]€40 vv@(talk · edits)Hyperluigi.gif 15:56, May 24, 2019 (EDT)
It is indeed. So it can get a separate page, just follow the guidelines on the MarioWiki:Galleries page. Doomhiker (talk)Topmini.png 15:58, May 24, 2019 (EDT)

Is there a 2 person edit function?[edit]

I cant make a page yet, since I have to wait about 5 more days until I'm autoconfirmed, so I was just wondering if Co-op edit was a function. Mad Hunter (talk) 13:12, September 27, 2019 (EDT)

Mobile games and new content[edit]

What's the policy on how we handle "unused content" with mobile games that will likely get these characters later on? For example, Dr. Mario World has four unimplemented player characters and eleven unimplemented assistants at the time of posting, but more are supposed to be added. In addition, all the characters so far that have been added were originally in the "pre-release and unused content" section. Mario Kart Tour is another example of this. It just doesn't seem like it should say "pre-release" or "unused". JoeRunner (talk and stuff) 21:23, September 29, 2019 (EDT)

Those Green contribution points[edit]

What are those green contribution points for and how do I become a level above autoconfirmed? Do the points have something to do with it? Is it how many edits I make or the point counter? User:Awesomehippos 22:09 October 16, 2019 (CST)

They're how many bytes of text were added or removed from a page, not edit points (though that sounds like a delightful idea). TheDarkStar MLBISBJJDarkStar.png 23:15, October 16, 2019 (EDT)

How to add controller buttons[edit]

So how can I add the button icon for controllers such as the switch A button or the d pad buttons? Reecey Boi (talk) 16:51, November 2, 2019 (EDT)

I think what you're looking for is explained here, but for those ones specifically I think you'd need {{button|ns|A}}, {{button|ns|Up}}, {{button|ns|Down}}, {{button|ns|Left}} and {{button|ns|Right}}, which outputs A Button, Up Button, Down Button, Left Button and Right Button. BBQ Turtle (talk) 16:58, November 2, 2019 (EDT)

Why only 5 personal images?[edit]

Noob Help[edit]

I have been working on a fanfiction based on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and I was wondering if it might be published on the wiki, possibly in the ‘Shroom. I already asked on the Smash Wiki and it probably can’t go there. I have no idea if someone has asked this before, or even if it will be liked. I apologize if this isn’t the place for this, also. Right, um, sorry to keep bugging you guys. I applied for a position, and while I was waiting for the results, I realized I probably need to become autoconfirmed before I would be allowed to write. Is there a list or table of things that need to be done? Magolor04726 (talk) 19:26, January 30, 2020 (EST)Magolor04726

Or will I just have to kind of browse around looking for errors? Magolor04726 (talk) 19:35, January 30, 2020 (EST)Magolor04726

You can learn how to become autoconfirmed here (Having an account for seven days + at least ten edits). Anyways, you don't need to be autoconfirmed at all to be a writer, so you're fine regardless. I'm pretty sure there was a writer who didn't have a wiki account one time. Doomhiker (talk)Topmini.png 19:52, January 30, 2020 (EST)
Also, while it's perfectly fine to ask 'Shroom related questions here, you can also ask this user, as they're the current director of the paper. Doomhiker (talk)Topmini.png 19:55, January 30, 2020 (EST)

Nice. To clarify, I can't add, only improve on others' works until I become autoconfirmed. Magolor04726 (talk) 21:02, January 30, 2020 (EST)Magolor04726

You can add new information, but you just can't do certain things like creating new pages or editing protected articles until you're autoconfirmed. BBQ Turtle (talk) 16:31, February 2, 2020 (EST)

Just thought of this, does asking questions like this count towards the total edit count needed to become autoconfirmed? Magolor04726 (talk) 16:20, February 4, 2020 (EST)Magolor04726

Yes, any edit counts, but don't add comments only for the sake of getting towards this count. Doomhiker (talk)Topmini.png 16:41, February 4, 2020 (EST)
Won't need to. This one is it. Thanks a bunch! Magolor04726 (talk) 17:19, February 4, 2020 (EST)Magolor04726

Bestiary like tables[edit]

Hi.

I'm not sure if I'm comunicating here corectly, but I have a question. I really like how on almost bottom of most pages, creatures and charcters have their stats and profiles throughout different games listed in a very great and easy to navigate in tables. I noticed thou, that Goombas, despite being, well, goombas, don't have one. I assumed that nobody just wanted to take up such a long to do task, seeing how they/ some variant of them, appears in almost every single game. I thought "why not" and tried to do so. Throgh the prosess thou, i found out that nowhere on the wiki, are stats of enemies and allies from bowser's minions series listed. I did some experiments and found out how goombas leveling works. I wanted to make a table, simmiullar to one of those in bestiaries, but I can't figure out how they work and where to look for them. They certainly aren't constructed on bestiary pages, nor are the same thing that is explained on "tables" page in help pages. I also thought, that using game icons for stats, instead of just text, saying "pow" or "HP" would make them even easier to read, but I got a warning, regarding uploading images and not using them anywhere. So here I am asking for help, can a normal member do that, or is it only for higher saff, and if so, how?
The preceding unsigned comment was added by MichaelTheTiger (talk).

Hi again, you don't need to worry about that, it's not a proper warning and you're not in any trouble, I was just letting you know as sometimes people just upload images without a purpose for them, but you've got a good idea and use for them. If it's the raw code for the bestiary templates you're looking for, try clicking the "edit" tab on Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions bestiary and it should come up, you could try to copy and adapt that. You should be able to do it as a regular member, though if you want to make a new page for it, you'll need to be autoconfirmed, which means you need to make at least ten edits and be a member for a week. I don't know exactly how the game works, so I can't give you exact help, but I hope that at least gives you somewhere to get started from. :) BBQ Turtle (talk) 16:27, February 2, 2020 (EST)

Mii Maker Mayhem[edit]

I was appalled to find out that there was no Mii Maker subsection for the Nintendo Switch and I want to change that. Upon further inspection I found there was only subsections for the eShop, Parental Controls, and home menu. I want to either add more subsections(for example, but no limited to; News, Album, and system setting uses like Airplane mode, Users and TV settings), or make a whole new page for the home menu with more subsections in it, or should I make completely new articles for each page? -PrinceFluff (talk) 12:40, February 5, 2020 (EST)

"appalled" seems excessive, but I get what you mean. Sub-sections for Mii Maker, News, Album, and System Settings would work. There is already a Mii Maker redirect that leads to Nintendo 3DS#Mii Maker, so maybe the redirect can be turned into a disambiguation or a full article? Sounds good. (I just typed "appalled" because I spent hours playing with the miis as a kid) PrinceFluff (talk) 14:15, February 5, 2020 (EST)

I can try to create those pages for you so you can edit them, Fluff, since you aren't autoconfirmed. Is that OK, Alex? Magolor04726 (talk) 14:17, February 5, 2020 (EST)Magolor04726

Mii Maker is the only one that I think could qualify for an article, but it might be best to bring that up on Mii Maker's talk page. The other ones aren't as big to warrant full articles. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:08, February 5, 2020 (EST)
