"Create" is a song composed by Japanese singer-songwriter Gen Hoshino that appeared as part of the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary, where it was unveiled in a series of Japan-only commercials. Hoshino also provides vocals for the song, which primarily features Japanese lyrics with an opening English section. The song was later released as a single on February 17, 2021.
Overview[edit]
The song features many references to the history of Nintendo and the Super Mario franchise. The lyrics are themed after Nintendo's development philosophy, and Gunpei Yokoi's concept of "lateral thinking with withered technology" is referenced within the lyrics. The recurring concept of "yellow magic" refers to the Famicom's yellow cartridges. The Game Boy start-up chime and Nintendo GameCube start-up theme are also incorporated into the song.
Several themes from the Super Mario franchise can be heard throughout the song. "Underground BGM" and "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. as well as "Player Down" and "Birabuto Kingdom BGM" from Super Mario Land are quoted during a breakdown section. "Rainbow Road" from Mario Kart Wii is quoted later in the song.
The commercials that used the song depict Hoshino performing the song. Clips from games in the Super Mario franchise that are playable on the Nintendo Switch are also shown.
Sound effects and iconography from Super Mario Bros. can be heard and seen throughout the music video for the song. The music video also contains several timestamps referring to dates relevant to Nintendo's history: a timestamp of "13.09.1985" refers to the Japanese release date of Super Mario Bros., and a timestamp of "2001 09 14" refers to the Japanese release date of the Nintendo GameCube. A timestamp of "2021 02 17" refers to the release date of the music video itself.
On December 31, 2025, a music video broadcast by NHK featured a new performance by Hoshino to celebrate New Year's Day 2026. The music video is set in the Nintendo Museum, where Hoshino visits several of the museum's exhibits. The Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Land breakdown section now features an appearance from Koji Kondo, who plays "Ground BGM" and "Player Down" from Super Mario Bros. on a melodica. During this section, Hoshino briefly sings into a Famicom controller's microphone. Hoshino ultimately walks outside of the museum to visit the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary special lighting displays and ends the song with fireworks.

Let’s take Let’s chase Let's create something — what an insane suggestion I was reborn — my billionth fresh restart Left out and forced out Let's create something — what a crazy suggestion I returned from the brink of death Confined inside Let's come up with a bright idea with some flair right now In the vast ocean of time, on the waves of hustle and bustle Let’s run right now, our adventure of creation awaits All over again Let's create something — what an insane suggestion |
