At Bowser Castle, Bowser is keeping tabs on Mario throught the Koopa Scope. I was looking in through an air vent, so some of the details are kinda fuzzy, but it went mostly like this.
Mario: That's it!!!!!! I'm not getting paid enough to save the World from Bowser! I'm living in a leaky cabin while Luigi is living in a luxury mansion! (it may be haunted but who cares!) the point is, it's time to get paid!!!
Bowser: Hmmmm... That's it! I must use his wish to my advantage! I must give him 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 of my fake Coins to distract him from protecting Peach and then I will take over the World and get rich!!! Junior! increase the production of fake coins by 500,000,000%!
Bowser Jr.: Ok Dad, but there is a Human in the air vent.
Bowser: WHAT???????!!!!!!!!!

Prize Descriptions:
Green Shell :The standard Koopa Shell, goes in a straight line when thrown. Also offers slightly faster swimming speed.
Red Shell: An uncommon Koopa Shell, homes in on the person in front of you when thrown, Also offers fast swimming speed.
Spiny Shell: A rare Shell that will go at an extremely fast speed and attack the driver in 1st, had it's wings torn off by enraged karters, it doesn't seem to like water though.
Gold Shell: An extremely rare shell, that never appears as an item in kart races, but offers extra fast swim speed. Retail value at 100 million coins, nah just kidding.
