Template:Justreleased Template:Articleabout Template:Infobox Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is an upcoming sports title for the Nintendo 3DS, which is the fifth installment on the Mario & Sonic series, along with the Wii U version. Like the other games, it takes place in the host city of the Olympics of the corresponding year, being Rio de Janeiro. This game will also have amiibo compatibility.

Characters

All playable characters from previous games in the series have been confirmed to return, in addition to 20 new playable characters (10 new Mario characters and 10 new Sonic characters) announced so far, for a current total of 41 playable characters. Similarly to the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, characters are only playable in certain events, with the exceptions of Mario, Sonic, and Mii characters (who are playable in all events). All the other returning characters are exclusive to two events each, while the new characters are only available for one.[1] Also, this is the first game in the series to feature unlockable playable characters (indicated by an *)[2]. Characters are unlocked by beating them in Adventure Mode on the dream version of the main event of that day.

Events

There are a total of 14 events in the game, each with two variants; a "Normal" version in which the events behave similarly to their real-life counterparts, and a "Plus" version where Mario and Sonic elements are incorporated into the event.

Training Events

In the Adventure Mode, the player can train by playing 30 events from the 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[12]. These events are:

amiibo

The game is also set to have amiibo functionality, but only with the Mario and Sonic amiibo. Using them will turn the Mario costume into the Gold Mario costume and the Sonic costume into the Super Sonic costume respectively.

Road to Rio

The game is also set to have a Road to Rio mode similar to the Adventure Tours in the DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and the Castle Club in Mario Golf: World Tour, with the Mii challenging different characters to events. To train for the main events, the player must play a selection of events from the 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. After playing a certain amount of rounds, the player will challenge a tower stage and then progress onto a new area. The mode will be divided into two sections, accessed by joining the respective gyms: Mario's Story and Sonic's Story, with a special ending for completing both. Each section will be divided into 7 days with one main event happening on each day.

Challenge Mode

The game will also have a challenge mode similar to the Super Smash Bros. games and Kid Icarus: Uprising.[2]

Marathon

The game will have a special mode where based on the number of steps the players mii will move, going certain distances will unlock certain milestones.
