Hammer Bros. (or Hammer Brothers) are Koopas that stand upright and throw hammers at passer-bys. They have been around since Super Mario Bros.. They also have bigger beaks than normal Koopas and wear armor. They can use special hammers to shrink enemies.

Biography

Origins

Hammer Bros. first appeared in Super Mario Bros. as semi-common enemies. Besides Bowser, they were the only bipedal Koopas in the game. Often, they appear in groups of two, and attack by jumping from a row of bricks at the top of the screen to a row of bricks in the middle of the screen to the ground. Rarely, a Hammer Bother will appear alone. Hammer Bros. will occasionally take a break from throwing hammers and jump into the air; this is Mario's chance to run under them.

Second Kingdom Conquest

In Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, Hammer Bros. returned to help King Koopa as he kidnapped Peach once again. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was very like Super Mario Bros., so, as it is expected, Hammer Bros. did little different from Super Mario Bros. in this game. However, this game did introduce a new attack pattern for certain Hammer Bros.: some would gradually home in on Mario and his brother.

Meet Hammer Bro.'s Brothers

Although absent from Super Mario Bros. 2 (which took place in Subcon), Hammer Bros. were given bigger roles in Super Mario Bros. 3. In this game, they essentially did what they did in Super Mario Bros., but were given three new variations: the rare Fire Bros., who spat fire in a manner immensely similar to that of Fire Mario, the Boomerang Bros., whose weapons would return to them, and the Sledge Bros., who were huge and could pound the ground (temporarily immobilizing Mario or Luigi). Also, Hammer Bros. patrolled the map screens, and touching one there would result in a battle with him and his brothers.

Wacky Variations, Yet No Standards

Strangely, normal Hammer Bros. were absent from Super Mario World. Even stranger, two variations of them still managed to appear! One of these variations, the Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro., was a stout Hammer Bro. riding a winged platform. The other, more creative introduced Bro was the Sumo Bro., which could create thunderbolts that exploded upon impact with the ground.

The Two Brothers and Their Hammers

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Hammer Bros. were made completely different. Like their predecessors, these Hammer Bros. had yellow skin. However, instead of green shells with green armor, SMRPG Hammer Bros. had black shells with black armor. They are also significantly larger than a normal Hammer Bro. (but presumably not larger than a Sledge Bro.). Additionally, these Hammer Bros. speak fondly of their hammers, as if their wooden weapons were sentient, living beings. (Interestingly enough, Smithy's minions are, in fact, sentient, living weapons.) There are only two Hammer Bros. in the game (excluding Dr. Topper).

During the events of Super Mario RPG, the Hammer Bros. were the leaders of the Koopa Troops forces in Mushroom Way. They were ordered to capture any intruders, which they did when the fungus Toad tried to pass through Mushroom Way to the Mushroom Kingdom. However, Mario showed up to rescue his friend. As a result, a battle erupted between the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom and the two Hammer Bros. During the battle, the Hammer Bros. pounded Mario with their hammers, and even threw multiple hammers at the plumber. When Mario defeated one of the brothers, the remaining brother used the move Valor Up to increase his defense. However, even though his defense was boosted, the second Hammer Bro. was defeated by Mario. After the fight, Toad was freed, Mario earned a Flower Jar, and the hero even picked up his defeated enemies Hammer to use in battle.

Paper Bros

In the game Paper Mario, Hammer Bros (along with Koopatrols) were the elites of Bowser's forces. They are mainly encountered in Bowser's Castle. They have two main attacks; throwing one hammer and doing a lot of damage with it, or throwing a bunch of hammers and doing one damage with each. Hammer Bros can also be encountered in Shyguy's Toybox, if Princess Peach says that they are what Mario is most afraid of.

To the Beanbean Kingdom!

Hammer Bros. made minor appearances in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, which (for the most part) took place in the Beanbean Kingdom. However, Mario and Luigi confront the game's first Hammer Bros., the Border Bros., directly on the border of the Beanbean and Mushroom Kingdoms. The Border Bros., presumably members of a Hammer Bro. sub-species (or possible Beanified Hammer Bros.), demanded that Mario and Luigi (who they seemed to be familiar with) partake in their Border Jump mini-game before entering the Beanbean Kingdom. Mario and Luigi pass, and are not only awarded with access to the Kingdom, but also with a Map! Later in the game, they encounter angry, Super Mario Bros.-reminiscent Hammer Bros. as enemies and tall, thin, and very Beanish Boomerang Bros. as foes. Finally, the game introduces one more Hammer Bro.: the Chomp-toting Chomp Bro., which depresses upon losing his pet.

Return to Paper

Hammer Bros. also appear in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. In this game they have the same attack pattern as last time, and are mainly found in Rougeport Sewers. A bunch of Hammer Bros also appear when Bowser and Kammy summon their army to fight Lord Crump and the X-Nauts.

There is also a Hammer Bro. named Hamma in the Glitz Pit. His team is with his two brothers, Bamma, a Boomerang Bro., and Flare, a Fire Bro.. He is the one that mentions the fact of Business Bros., for him to do so, you must talk to him in the Major League locker room.

Helping Wario

During Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix two Hammer Brothers blocked the entrance of Mushroom Park to stop Mario (or Luigi) and Toad from getting the next Music Key from Wario.

However they would only let them pass if Mario danced against them and won. The Hammer Brothers lost and Mario was able to get into Mushroom Park.

5p34kin' 1337

Only one pair of Hammer Bros. appeared in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, and these individuals are known as the L33t Hamm3r Broz. In this game, they were reluctantly brainwashed by the Shroobs and forced to guard the Vim Factory from any intruders (or "pwn teh n00bs", as they put it). They were also notable for using leetspeak in their hypnotized forms, which caused a great phenomenon on the internet. Although the two L33t Hamm3r Broz. successfully "pwned" Mario and Luigi, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi were left behind. The Bros. were forced to "continue their pwnership", and went into battle with the babies. They were eventually defeated, though, and proved to be allies. As a reward for saving them from the Shroobs, they gave Baby Mario and Baby Luigi Hammers and trained them in Hammer use. After the early parts of the Vim Factory, the L33t Hamm3r Broz. (and any other Hammer Bro., for that matter) are never seen again.

Bowser's Best

Hammer Bros. had a huge role in Super Princess Peach, where they seem to be Bowser's most trusted minions. In this game, it is they that storm Peach's Castle and kidnap Mario, Luigi, and the Toads. They are major characters, and they are led by the Army Hammer Bro himself. They also appear as generic enemies towards the middle of the game, and even Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bros. get a chance to reappear. Their militant role was distracted, though, by the wild Vibe Scepter, resulting in sub-species such as the Calm Hammer Bro and Calm Amazing Flying Hammer Brother.

Playable Appearances

One Hammer Brother appeared in Mario Superstar Baseball on the Bowser Monsters team and as a secret character. Several of them also appeared as teammates in Super Mario Strikers (which is odd, considering that they are a tiny bit more obscure than other characters).

Hammer Brothers will appear playable in Mario Party 8. This will probably mean that the Hammer Bro. orb will no longer be available.

Variations

Amazin' Flying Hammer Bros. - Hammer Bros. perched atop a flying platform, tossing hammers around. When defeated, their platform remains. Their most recent appearance was in Super Princess Peach.

Army Bros. (Army Hammer Bro) - The elite forces of the Hammer Brother family as seen in Super Princess Peach.

Calm Hammer Bros. - Hammer Bros. that are usually found asleep. Quick or sudden movement will wake them up and they'll attack like normal.

Boomerang Bros. - Basically, a Hammer Brother that throws boomerangs instead of hammers. Their uniforms are white instead of black.

Chomp Bros. - As the name implies, these bulky baddies throw Chain Chomps instead of hammers. They are only found in Beanbean Kingdom.

Fire Bros. - Instead of hammers, these fellows spit fireballs. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, a Fire Bro.'s fireball can cause an opponent to catch fire. Their uniforms are red.

Sledge Bros. - Monstrously sized Hammer Bros. that can cause small, localized earthquakes when they stomp. They are found in Giant Land and reappear in New Super Mario Bros. in World 8.

Business Bros. - Hammer Bro. businessman briefly mentioned in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

It is unknown if there is a female version of Hammer Brothers.
