Super Smash Bros.
In the original Super Smash Bros., every fighter has at least four colors to be used for when multiple players have the same fighter or when they are in team battles, with some being exclusive to NPCs being battled in the larger "character team" fights in the 1P game. Some of these are based around previous costumes in the character's history, and a few others also have official nicknames.[1] Yoshi and Captain Falcon have the most at six, with the former due to his team fight in the 1P game and the latter due to having different colors between the standard multiplayer and the team battles. Pikachu and Jigglypuff instead get colored headwear (a wizard hat and a ribbon, respectively) that only appear in alternate costumes.

Super Smash Bros. Melee
In Super Smash Bros. Melee, every character has four to six colors, all of which are selectable by cycling through them on the character select screen. Yoshi and Captain Falcon again have six, as well as Kirby; all others have four or five. Pikachu and Jigglypuff, along with newcomer Pichu, once again use headwear and other accessories, but now sometimes have subtly different body colors as well and the specific accessory varies by costume rather than always being the same one in different colors.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, almost every character has six available colors that are once again able to be selected when choosing a character by cycling through them. However, Pikachu still only has four, and all other Pokémon characters as well as Sonic have five, with Pikachu and Jigglypuff still being primarily costume-based. Wario has two versions each with six colors, being his WarioWare outfit and his typical outfit, giving him a total of twelve.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U
In both Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, all characters have a minimum of eight colors, which are shared between the two games. Wario's costumes are now split with four on each type of costume, which is mirrored by most other characters with multiple designs including Villager, Corrin, Robin, and Wii Fit Trainer (who each have male and female versions), Cloud and Bayonetta (who have game-based alternate designs similar to Wario), and Olimar (who has fellow Pikmin protagonist Alph as his last four variations, which is reflected by the in-game names). However, Little Mac has 16 due to having a separate group of eight for holographic costumes based on the arcade Punch-Out!! games. More characters with non-color outfit changes are also present, such as Shulk having a shirtless variation, while Pikachu and Jigglypuff continue to have different accessories with slight differences in body color. Bowser Jr. uses each of the seven Koopalings as his variations, with the names in the user interface, trophies, and announcements changing to match.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, every character has eight alternate costumes, many of which involve a change of clothes or the addition or removal of a hat, helmet, or similar piece of equipment rather than just colors (such as Mario's alternate costumes including Builder Mario and Wedding Mario from Super Mario Odyssey and Yoshi's final costume being based on Yoshi's Crafted World). There are multiple cases of sets of costumes being split by gender (such as Inkling, Pokémon Trainer, and Steve in addition to the ones from before) or game-based design, as well as ones where each are a different character (such as Bowser Jr. as before, or Dragon Quest's Hero having four designs in two colors each).
