Anagrams

Written by: BBQ Turtle (talk)

Hello everyone, welcome to the first Anagrams section of 2026! I hope you all had a lovely holiday season and the January return-to-reality wasn't too jarring (Can't have been much worse than mine! :P). My anagrams for you this month are all birds, we've got a mix of some characters and species in here so there should be a nice variety of Anagrams for you start your year off with! If you'd like to suggest the theme for next month, or any future month, as well as any anagrams to go in them, please let me know on my talk page or in a PM to me on the forums, I'd love to hear from you. I don't want to leave you waiting too much longer as the early bird catches the worm, so I'll let you flock to these anagrams!

How it works...
Basically, this puzzle consists of solving the anagrams. Each month has a specific theme, which will give you a clue about what sort of words or phrases the anagrams will be. I've also included the boxes that the anagrams will fit into, so you'll be able to tell how many words it will solve to be and how many letters will be in each word, which should give you a hand too. You'll also notice that within each set of boxes, one of the squares are yellow. As you solve each anagram, note down the letter which appears in the yellow squares, and if you can solve all of the anagrams, you'll also get a bonus anagram to solve from completing all of the others. I've included the letter configuration for this one at the bottom too, just to give you an extra helping hand. Best of luck!

Word Search

Written by: Shoey (talk)

Hello and welcome to Word Search, the 'Shroom's premier word-finding section! So if you know anything about me (and you probably don't), you'd know that I love reading about ancient China, particularly between the Qin Dynasty (the first dynasty to unify China for a whole 14 years!) and Six Dynasty Era. Between those two eras lay the two Han Dynasties, the main ruling dynasty of ancient China, which was briefly broken up by proto-socialist Mr. "I'm going to make 28 new types of currency and ban all the old kinds" himself, Emperor Wang Mang of the Xin Dynasty. Because of my fondness for this era of China, this month's section is all about those who claimed the Mandate of Heaven, the various Emperors of the Han Dynasty. Sadly we couldn't use all of the ones I wanted such as Wu (every dynasty until the Sui Dynasty worth its salt has a Wu, Wen, and Ming) or Emperor Ai (he attempted to pass the throne to his gay lover, which didn't work, and instead the aforementioned Wang Mang forced him to kill himself). Unfortunately, their names are too short for the Word Search editor to include them. And technically most lists don't actually include Emperor Qianshao, a child emperor whose brief reign was completely dominated by the Empress Lü, the long running Empress Dowager/Regent of Han; but I like the name and this is my section so move past it! Words can be found vertically, horizontally, diagonally, backwards, and inside other words. As always, have fun and stay safe.

Crossword

Written by: MarioMorty (talk)

Welcome, everyone, to Crosswords, brought to you by me, MarioMorty. It's a new year, which means it's time for a new puzzle! Now admittedly, that isn't exclusive to the new year, but regardless, here we are. But not all is lost in the department of new, as today I'm trying a new format for the clues. You'll have 24 words to fill, corresponding to each cup in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. As you'll see, each clue has a blank which, as you may assume, is what you need to answer. With that, I, MarioMorty, will make my departure until my grand return... next month.

Hiding Koopa

Written by: Waluigi Time (talk)

Hello there, 'Shroom readers! Okay, I'm a little late to the party here, but with how much of a white whale Hollow Knight: Silksong has been in the gaming community, seems like it deserves a spotlight here, don't you think? I did Metroid Prime 4 months ago, so it's only fair. Five Koopas are hiding in this artwork for the game, which hopefully won't take you six years to complete.

Pixel Personas

Happy New Year everybody, and welcome to the first ever Pixel Personas section of 2026! Who knew figuring out these three subjects could be a great way to kick off the year? Hopefully you still have excitement from New Year's Day - use it to help you win this game!

New to Pixel Personas? Here's what it's about: Pixel Personas is a game played in three rounds. In each round, I'll show an image of a Super Mario character (this includes enemies), but they're all pixelated! You (the readers) must analyze and identify who these characters are. Each round is tougher than the last, with more lesser-known characters and larger pixels, making it more difficult to tell who it is. After you make your guess, click/tap onhover over the card the image is on to flip it over and reveal the character!

This particular section doesn't have a set theme, but it'll still be fun nonetheless. Are you ready to play? Go for it!

Nice going y'all! Thanks you for playing and see you in February's issue! It's gonna contain three pink subjects! Sadly Pinkie Pie isn't one of them...

Connections

Written by: Roserade (talk)

Greetings, beautiful 'Shroom readers! Welcome back to another edition of Connections! New year, same me, because I've misplaced all of my terms for the... 26th time? I think that's how math works. Anyway, let's sort through these words together!

How it works:
Below is a table of sixteen different words, all of them with some sort of connection to the Mario series. These words correlate in sets of four, and it's up to you to figure out which words belong to a set! Work through the grid and decide which words are connected. Once you think you have the answer, check against the provided answers. If you get stuck along the way, feel free to utilize the clues. There's only one correct answer, so be on the lookout for words that feel like they might fit in more than one category. Good luck!

Chain Chomp Toadette Lakitu Mii
Hammer Bro. Dry Bones Shadow Mario Thwomp
Rosalina Diddy Kong Boo Waluigi
Blooper Petey Piranha Dry Bowser Funky Kong
Clue 1

Start with "Funky Kong"

Clue 2

You're smashing it, sure you need an assist?

Clue 3

My friend said they'd join the party later.

Answer
  1. Funky Kong, Mii, Rosalina, Dry Bowser: newcomers to Mario Kart Wii
  2. Chain Chomp, Lakitu, Thwomp, Waluigi: Assist Trophies in the Super Smash Bros. series
  3. Toadette, Hammer Bro, Dry Bones, Blooper: unlockable characters in the Mario Party series
  4. Shadow Mario, Diddy Kong, Boo, Petey Piranha: newcomers to Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

How did you do? Did you figure out the connections? Thanks for playing!

Where in the Marioverse is Carmen Sandiego?

Written by: FunkyK38 (talk)

HOW TO PLAY

Each issue, you will be given a case to solve and clues to use to help you find the solution! Use your Mario knowledge to crack the case!

You will begin each case at the scene of the crime, and you will be given three clues from passerby as to where the next hot spot is and what game it’s from. Using your knowledge of Mario games and the Super Mario Wiki, figure out where the crook is and go track them down! There are four locations each round: the crime scene (1) at the start, two locations (2 and 3) with clues, and the hideout for the crook of the month (4). Answers for locations will be given with the corresponding round, for example, the clues from the crime scene will lead you to location 2, and once you open the spoiler bubbles for location 2, you will be given the correct answer. You can open the clues for each location in any order you’d like, but be careful! You may encounter an incorrect clue that could throw you off the case!

Clues offered will give you a hint either about the next location or the game it’s in. Unlike a regular Carmen Sandiego game, you do not have to collect information about the crook you are tracking down.

Challenge round (optional):

-Find all locations and games correctly in two minutes or less

-Find all locations and games correctly without using the rest of the Wiki for help

It's a foul turn of events! They've stepped over the line!

"Gumshoe! We've got another case of unsportsman-like conduct! I'm sure you are aware of the upcoming Mario Tennis Fever, the first new Mario Tennis game to be released on the Switch 2. It features a large cast of characters, some brand-new to not only tennis, but the Mario franchise as a whole, and some new mechanics are debuting as well. Like the name of the game Fever Rackets are special equipment that players can use to get a leg up on their opponent by adding in special shots, effects, and power-ups. As I'm sure you've probably guessed, the fever rackets have been subjected to strict testing by the Mario Sports Lab before they will be used on the courts- until now! The lab contacted us, stating that all of the fever rackets have been stolen! As the lab is a top-secret facility, need-to-know basis, it seems unlikely that this is a petty theft, leading us to conclude that Carmen has something to do with massterminding this plot. We need you to track down our thief, gumshoe! Let's make it a love game in your favor!"

CLUE 3

CLUE 2

CLUE 3

“You want to have cake here? But you'll get sand in your frosting! Well, if you insist, I guess.”

CASE CLOSED

HIDEOUT ANSWER: World 5 from Super Mario 3D World World 5

We've got a fever... and we don't need medicine!

"Excellent work, gumshoe! Your efforts led us right to our crook- an associate of Carmen's who we haven't seen in a while. It seems he's been trying to make himself more silent to better sneak around- but he was tempted by the Cakewalk level contained within World 5 and couldn't help himself from sampling the frosting. We nabbed him right in the middle of his snack time, and it sounds like we might be able to bribe him with cake to get him to spill the beans on Carmen's plans. We'll keep you updated on that front. The Mario Sports Lab has received the rackets back gratefully, and they have sent a generous bonus to you along with a nifty monogrammed racket for your own personal use. Perhaps you can try it out at the ACME tennis courts after you finish writing up your case files for this investigation! We'll be in touch if Carmen decides she wants to partake in more swiping."

Musical Quiz

Written by: Ninja Squid (talk)

MusicalQuiz Logo.png

Hello, everyone, and welcome to a new edition of Musical Quiz!

2026 has officially arrived! I hope this new year brings you lots of happiness and good health. As for happiness, know that I will continue to bring you a little bit of it on a monthly basis, since Musical Quiz is not going anywhere. Oh, and as a matter of fact, today I am celebrating my first anniversary at the helm of this section! :wahoo:

Regarding my plans for 2026, I have a few projects in mind, some of which involve my desire to get up to all sorts of mischief as usual, but that should not come as a surprise. Speaking of which, I need to figure out how to wipe out all the Super Arrow memorabilia from the office here once and for all. I sure wonder how Waluigi Time (talk) manage to keep such a high stock of it... :-P

Anyway, back to Musical Quiz. For this edition, we are sticking to the usual. Can you guess which game the following musical excerpts come from? Have fun!

Hex Puzzle

Written by: Aomaf (talk)

Welcome back to Hex Puzzle. Hex Puzzle is finally back. and this Hex Puzzle section is a special section for my first anniversary of me as a 'Shroom writer! Let's get started! ツ

How It Works
You need to use hex numbers to decode texts (or, if you are too lazy to decode the text yourself, copy the hex to a hex editor like HxD). When doing it manually, look for repeated hex values and guess at what letters they might be, or fill them in using letters you decoded from previous puzzles. For instance, 4D 61 72 69 6F 20 61 6E 64 20 4C 75 69 67 69 is "Mario and Luigi" or 4D 69 63 6B 65 79 20 4D 6F 75 73 65 20 41 6E 64 20 44 6F 6E 61 6C 64 20 44 75 63 6B is "Mickey Mouse And Donald Duck". With these together, you can guess that 4D is a capital M.
Hex Value Table
Use this table to translate hex values manually. The column on the left correlates to the first digit of the value, while the top row correlates to the second digit of the value. As an example, "41" would translate to A on this table.

Four photographs are stacked in a vertical comic format. In the first, a plush of Mario is turned towards a plush of Spongebob, which is facing the camera. In the second, the Mario plush is on top of the Spongebob plush, with its feet on Spongebob's head. The third photo is zoomed in on the Spongebob plush's face, which has added blue streaks in the eyes to represent tears. In the fourth photo, the Mario and Spongebob plushes lie beside each other, both facing upwards. - (From Mario And Spongebob Crossover story from February 2025 issue)

Answer
Hello, all readers. My name is Aomaf. Everyone knows that next month will be the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 with its $80 Mario Kart World, but there is one last Mario game set to be released on the original Switch one day before the release of the new console. I was lucky enough to get early access from Nintendo (thanks, Nintendo!), and so today I am going to review the game. - (From Game Corner From May 2025 issue)

Answer
Eleven photographs are shown in comic format, arranged left to right, top to bottom In the first, a plush of a Minion looks at a mission list and sees his first mission is "Stealing a Nintendo Switch 2 with Mario Kart World" since the console is expensive and Mario Kart World is also expensive. In the second, there is an Elephant with his luxury gaming goods behind him, including a Nintendo Switch 2, its case, its Pro Controller, and Mario Kart World. In the third, the Minion is trying to steal the Switch 2 while the Elephant is asleep in blankets. The fourth shows the Minion now having reached the goods and stealing Mario Kart World by putting it in a bag. The fifth shows the Minion stealing the case. The sixth panel shows the Minion is stealing the Pro Controller. In the seventh, the Minion is stealing the piece de resistance, the Switch 2. The eighth panel shows the Minion with the bag, trying to escape from the room. The ninth panel shows the Minion with the bag in another room. In the tenth, the Elephant has woken up from sleeping. The eleventh panel shows the Elephant is super sad over his Switch 2 being stolen. Maybe he should buy the upcoming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for his PC or PS5 instead of Mario Kart World due to this game also having Hatsune Miku as a playable character. - (From Special Story From June 2025 issue)

Answer
Welcome everyone to another madness-filled installment of Game Corner! One month ago, Mario Kart World released. The reception of this game has been odd due to several factors, for example the $80 price, problems with the open world, the game not having 200cc, and the game lacking some characters like Diddy Kong and Funky Kong. I hear some people are skipping MKWorld because of this, which is funny considering the fact that MKWorld is the first new main Mario Kart title since MK8 for the Wii U. Oh, now I and maybe you are feeling old. Other people want to play the upcoming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds instead of Mario Kart World due to crossover stuff. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds still has the elephant in the room of price, but has crossovers. - (From Game Corner From July 2025 issue)

Answer
Eleven photographs are shown in comic format, arranged left to right, top to bottom. The first shows Mickey Mouse behind an open laptop, viewing its screen. In the second, he has moved in front of a television, presenting to an audience (shown sitting on a couch in panel three) of Mario, Toad, Spongebob, Yoshi, Luigi, and Patrick. In the fourth panel, Mickey has a pencil and is writing a note. In the fifth, Mickey holds up the note, which reads: "Mickey's Awards of 2025. M1. The Best Kart Racer". The sixth shows Mickey approaching two stacks of games, one stack containing Mario titles and the other an assortment of titles. The seventh shows Mickey awarding first place in front of Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Yoshi, with copies of Mario 64 for Nintendo 64, Mario Kart Wii for the Wii, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch, and Mario Kart World for the Switch 2 in front of them. The eighth shows Mickey awarding second place in front of Spongebob, Patrick, and a collection of games which include Sonic the Hedgehog for the Master System, Sonic 2 for the Mega drive, Cars 2 for the PS3, Ducktales Remastered for the PS3, Sonic Mania for the PS4, and an obscured DVD of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. The ninth shows a widened shot of Mickey back in front of the television (now showing Epic Mickey Rebrushed's titlescreen) and the games and audience on the couch. In the tenth, Mickey flips a light switch. In the eleventh, the same wide shot from the ninth is seen again, but now dark, with only the television's glow as illumination. - (From Mickey Mouse story from August 2025 issue)

Answer
Hello to all breakfasters. You may know that WT Cereal products are hard to buy in stores right now. People are mad over the shortage and are having to turn to eating rival cereals for their breakfast meals. These rival cereals taste sooo horrible, but consumers must endure them just for the sake of eating cereal. Consumers are reporting bad tastes as they switch to WT's rival cereal (a.k.a.
