move 5-0
So in this proposal for renaming two Bowser's Castle tracks based on Mario Kart Tour, the opposition argued that renaming would be inconsistent with this page not also using its more recent name from Mario Kart Tour. Now that that proposal has passed, this should be moved as well for consistency with that and to comply with the naming policy prioritizing the most recent name.

Comments[edit]
I don't even think this needs a proposal. Shell Shocked was just moved to Tread Carefully with no discussion at all, presumably for the same naming policy reason. I feel this, as well as other similar cases, can just be moved.

- Since the Bowser's Castle move needed a proposal and even had some opposition, and since (from my experience) proposals tend to get things done faster than normal discussions, I thought that I'd err on the side of caution and make a proposal for this as well. - Your call. I guess there's no harm in just being sure. That being said, I feel a discussion for topics like Trick and the Turbo Yoshi also need to be considered.

So I was reading over the naming policy and I happen to notice that the page itself does not actually say we use the most recent name. It says we use the most commonly used English name, which as far as I'm concerned, does not mean we use the most recent name. It means we use the most common English name for the title, which technically means that, despite SNES Koopa Beach 2 being referred to as SNES Koopa Troopa Beach 2 in Tour, that's not the most commonly used English name. SNES Koopa Beach 2 has two games that use the former name and only one that uses the latter name, meaning that the most commonly used English name is still SNES Koopa Beach 2. Now I did read the policy the best I could, reading all the bullet points for the Naming an Article section and it's all possible I could be misinterpreting something or I could've missed some details, but I feel this is something that could be discussed either here or elsewhere because on a technical note, this would affect the aforementioned proposal renaming Bowser Castle 1, as well as Shell Shocked, as it also has two appearances under the name Shell Shocked and only one under Tread Carefully.

- I checked the naming policy page, and there is technically a section for this, being MarioWiki:Naming#Name changes.
WildWario (talk) 00:16, October 15, 2021 (EDT) - You're taking the 'most commonly used English name' quote out of context. The sentence containing that quote then immediately clarifies that it's referring to regional name differences. MarioWiki:Naming#Name changes clearly states that recent names take priority over older names unless the newer name was a blatant error, which it is not in this case. Article name[edit]
So, because of Mario Kart World, this course's name is now "Koopa Troopa Beach" with no prefix or number. That, once again, raises a question about the "always use the most recent name" policy, and shows another flaw in it. That means this article will need to be moved to "Koopa Troopa Beach (Mario Kart World)", but the course didn't debut in World. So then you'd think to name it "Koopa Troopa Beach (Super Mario Kart)" but the course wasn't named as such in Super Mario Kart, can easily confuse it for Koopa Beach 1, and that creates confusion there. The best solution would be to name it back to just "SNES Koopa Beach 2", the name it's most known by and the name it uses most, however this wiki has the flawed system to always use its most recent name, only creating issues like this. - YoYo

- The Rhythm Heaven Wiki has the same thing going on with many of the classic games being renamed with a "2" because that's what they were called in Rhythm Heaven Megamix in order to make room for the prequel games. I always found that a bit messy and would've preferred if they kept the original game titles and just move the prequel games with "(Megamix)" as its identifier. Similarly, I'd like it if this course was renamed back to "Koopa Beach 2", bit it would mean that a lot of articles would have to be moved to their old names for parity's sake. Even if we have to exclusively do this to Mario Kart courses, it means that DK's Jungle Parkway would have to be renamed to "D.K.'s Jungle Parkway" or something.

- Yeah. I didn't even know the wiki was holding a vote to remove track prefixes, and if I did I would have definitely voted against it. I at the very least think tracks who share a name should have their prefixes on the page. For example, everyone I know calls Wii Rainbow Road Wii Rainbow Road, they don't say "The Rainbow Road from Mario Kart Wii". I personally think every track should have a prefix. I know no game technically ever ever calls N64 Wario Stadium N64 Wario Stadium, but that's what literally everybody calls it. Polterpup (talk) 02:19, June 28, 2025 (EDT)
- Some issues would arise if we were to add prefixes to every MK track:
- The name would then be considered conjectural (at least no game would have ever formatted it like this), and using an unofficial name for a page when an official name exists goes against the wiki's naming policy.
- If we do go ahead with this, how do we make sure it's "how everyone calls it"? Mario Kart 8, 8 Deluxe and World itself do not have official prefixes yet, so some people use "U", "NSW" and "NSW2" while others use "Wii U", "Switch", "World", etc.

- Some issues would arise if we were to add prefixes to every MK track:
- Yeah, 8 doesn't have prefixes, but I think it would be a good idea to have them from SNES to 3DS courses at least. Or if somebody has another suggestion share, because I don't think the current system works well. We don't even know if prefixes are gone for good, this game may be a oneoff. - You can propose to make an exception for this one course. Thing is it'd be just as confusing for the many users playing World and unfamiliar with the original courses if it were to be named "Koopa (Troopa) Beach 2", and the more timely name is generally prioritised since that's the name it would be known by by most people currently. For the time being, the {{about}} notice on the page should help.

- There already was a proposal about this, which failed. Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 20:51, June 30, 2025 (EDT)
