In Super Mario 64 DS, Cheep Chomps have no sunglasses, and their design greatly resembles Boss Bass with more defined wing-like pectoral fins, a yellow dorsal fin and a triple-lobed tail. They still have distinguishable scales, but they are smaller and red. Cheep Chomps are also smaller and less wide than before, while the opening and closing of their mouths is done smoothly instead of instantaneously. The same design was reused in both Mario Kart DS and Yoshi's Island DS, except the Cheep Chomps were given a brighter shade of red.

Behavior
Cheep Chomps are known for their predatory nature which orignate from Boss Basses, despite their sluggish and deliberate movement, are quite dangerous and fierce in their pursuit of prey. They are typically solitary, patrolling their designated water zones with a predatory instinct. Known for their active hunting behavior, Cheep Chomps will pursue intruders like Mario when within range, attempting to eat or damage them. While they are aggressive, their movement is relatively slow and deliberate, which can give players a slight advantage in dodging their lunges, though their ferocity makes them formidable foes. Usually found alone, they patrol specific water areas, emphasizing their territorial nature.
When a character enters their territory or comes close, Cheep Chomps become alert and slowly follow, opening their mouths wide and lunging in a slow, arcing motion to strike or swallow the intruder. Their attacks can be dodged with proper timing, but if caught, the victim will be eaten. They often open and close their mouths rapidly as a warning or idle behavior before attacking. Cheep Chomps can also damage or knock back smaller aquatic enemies like Cheep Cheeps and Urchins, sometimes clearing the area of other threats. They can be defeated with fireballs or other attacks, such as the Mega form in certain games; after being hit, they may retreat or become temporarily stunned, making them vulnerable.
Despite their high accuracy, their slow movement allows skilled players to avoid their lunges by strategic positioning, such as getting behind them or jumping over. When near beaches or shallow water, Cheep Chomps often swim away or cease pursuit, avoiding areas where they cannot attack effectively. Occasionally, glitches can cause them to beach themselves or become stuck, remaining inert until they fall off the stage or reset.
While Cheep Chomps are aggressive, Porcupuffers are generally considered even more hostile, actively trying to attack trespassers that enter its water, making it a more actively aggressive species.
