Template:Lang
This template sets the rendering language for some given text in any language. The first parameter is the ISO code for the language and the second parameter is the text.
About
For scripts written using CJK characters (hanzi / kanji / hanja / chữ Nôm), this template forces the characters to be rendered in the preferred font of the specified language, thus displaying the character in a language- or region-specific variant or orthography that is designated to a single code point due to Han unification. This is useful to ensure that materials of these languages are rendered properly, instead of being affected by the default font preferred by the reader's browser (which varies depending on the user, but usually corresponds to simplified Chinese).
Specific ISO codes that can be used for this purpose are as follows:
- Simplified Chinese -
zh-hans,cmn(Mandarin),wuu(Wu) - Traditional Chinese (Taiwan) -
zh-hant,zh-tw,cmn-tw(Taiwanese Mandarin),min(Hokkien),hsn(Xiang),gan(Gan),hak(Hakka) - Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong, Macau) -
zh-hk,zh-hant-hk,zh-mo,yue(Cantonese) - Japanese -
ja - Korean -
ko
Regarding the choice between Taiwan and Hong Kong orthographies for traditional Chinese, the Taiwan orthography should be favored for most instances of traditional Chinese, while the Hong Kong orthography should be reserved for media and names exclusive to Hong Kong/Macau, as well as citations in Cantonese.
Usage
The first row displays the traditional Chinese name「反骨慢慢龜」in the default font preferred by the browser. Subsequent rows display the name in each orthography preferred for the language or region.
