Japan-only system categoriesEdit

Do nothing 3-1-5
Currently there exists two categories on the wiki that act as sub-categories for the Systems category. These are Japan-only systems and Systems unreleased in Japan. The former was created in 2010 whilst the latter was created in 2024. I feel there really isn't much of a need to have two specific categories for one region given there aren't other categories for other regions. I do think the idea of categorizing systems that only released in a single region is an interesting one, thus why I am creating this proposal.
The main thing I want to propose is to rework the two categories into a new one called "Region-exclusive systems" which would catalog systems that were only released in a single region. The region in particular does not matter as long as it only released in one. Alternatively if there isn't much of a need to categorize these systems under regions on MarioWiki then removing the existing Japan categories wouldn't hurt.

Rework the categories: region-exclusive systemsEdit
- Bro3256 (talk) Per proposal.
- SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) Yeah, this makes sense. Per all. (And yeah, I would support a proposal that's this but for games)
- Martendo (talk) Per all.
Remove the categories: self-explanatoryEdit
Keep the categories: do nothingEdit
- EvieMaybe (talk) isn't technically every system region-exclusive? i don't think Nintendo's ever released a console in, say, North Sentinel Island...
...on a more serious note, these categories are useful because this is a wiki about a Japanese franchise developed primarily by Japanese studios for Japanese systems, and then exported to the rest of the world. these categories group the subset of systems that don't fit into those last two stipulations, that being "Japanese systems that have NOT been exported to the rest of the world" and "non-Japanese systems that never made it to the franchise's region of origin". i understand the attempt to be region-neutral, but i feel like it ignores that Japan isn't just another region in regards to the Super Mario franchise. - Platform (talk) Per Evie.
- Camwoodstock (talk) Per Evie, plus, we're a tad skeptical a merge like this makes scales well when it comes to the region-specific games, of which there are far more, and more specific categories therein.
- Nelsonic (talk) Per Evie and Cam.
- Waluigi Time (talk) Per Evie.
CommentsEdit
Out of curiosity, if the resulting merge goes through, would we do anything to the games-specific equivalents of Category:Japan-only games and Category:Games unreleased in Japan? Maybe a separate proposal for those two? :O ~Camwoodstock ( talk ☯ contribs ) 18:52, September 24, 2025 (EDT)
- It probably wouldn't hurt to do a separate proposal for the game categories and you could even cite the outcome of this proposal as a reason. To keep things simple this proposal is just focusing on the system side. -- Bro3256 (talk) 20:12, September 24, 2025 (EDT)
@EvieMaybe: What I am mainly proposing is to expand the scope of the category. If Japan-exclusive systems were moved to Region-exclusive systems, the articles currently categorized would remain untouched. What this move means is allowing other region specific systems to be categorized such as LodgeNet for example. The question is no longer "Did this system release in Japan?" it becomes "Did this system release elsewhere?". Yes, Nintendo Co., Ltd. is a Japanese company, but that shouldn't discount their international operations because of that. That being siad, if "Japan isn't just another region in regards to the Super Mario franchise" then why keep the categories to begin with? After all they were created unprompted in 2010 and 2024 respectively and weren't questioned up until this point. -- Bro3256 (talk) 03:58, October 8, 2025 (EDT)
