==Make Cap Block an article (take 2) or merge Cap Switch back into ! Switch==
This is a continuation of a [[Talk:! Switch#Merge Purple Switch here, split Cap Switch, or both|previous]] proposal as well as a redo of the above. Simply put, what we have right now is a half-measure. Cap Switch was split from ! Switch, but the block equivalent remains unsplit, and the ''Super Mario 64'' and ''Super Mario 64 DS'' versions of both are still peppered throughout multiple articles. This proposal aims to simplify linkage, maintain consistency, and hopefully finish the job started by the previous proposal. Here is the summary for why it ought to be its own article:
*Like the perma-activating switches, the power-up blocks serve essentially the same purpose between ''Super Mario 64'' and ''Super Mario 64 DS'', and are direct counterparts.
*"Cap Switch" and "Cap Block" is an English localization, as the original term isn't indicative of the type of power-up: in the Japanese version of ''Super Mario 64'', the Cap Switch is properly named 「アイテムスイッチ」 (Item Switch) and the Cap Block is properly named 「アイテムブロック」 (Item Block), which are noticeably less specific; meanwhile, the ''Super Mario 64 DS'' object is identified as <tt>ITEM_BLOCK</tt> internally (VS game, <tt>VS_ITEM_BLOCK</tt>), and there are completely different, character-switching "[[tcrf:Super Mario 64 DS#Cap Blocks (0x0021 to 0x0023)|Cap Blocks]]" unused in the game.
*Additionally, while the English ''Super Mario 64 DS'' manual gives the name "! Block" to the yellow block, the Japanese manual gives the name "''Orange Block''" which, while different from the ''Super Mario 64'' version ("''yellow block''"), still fits within the colored block naming scheme despite there no longer being green or blue blocks to have to make color differentiation necessary.
*The arbitrary symbol flip from "!" to "?" is deemed trivial (we're not splitting Tower of the Wing Cap anytime soon after all) enough that ''Super Mario 64'' and ''Super Mario 64 DS'' content can easily be shared within the same articles, separate from !/? Switch/Block (<nowiki>{{main}}</nowiki> will be used in those article sections).
*The general sentiment towards the end of the previous proposal supported this idea, but it was slightly outside the scope of the original proposer's intent and the above's result halted traction.
*The Metal Box from the ''Super Smash Bros.'' series is the green block from ''Super Mario 64'' and thus belongs in the same article, featuring its own section.
I may add an option without the final point if there's a demand for it, but as of writing I don't think it's necessary as having both would be bending [[MarioWiki:Once and only once|once and only once]].

Orange ! Blocks?

Aren't the ! Blocks in Super Mario 64 and the remake yellow instead of orange? In Super Mario 64 DS the blocks look more yellow than orange. Please reply to my talk page. TheUnknown67 18:28, 10 July 2016 (EDT)

Item?

When I played Super Mario World, I hit a red ! Block and I got a Fire Flower. When I hit the blue ! Block, I got a Super Star. How in the world did this happen? Red Oho Jee from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. OhoJeeOnFire (talk)

Make Cap Block an article

Settledproposal.svg This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit any of the sections in the proposal. If you wish to discuss the article, do so in a new header below the proposal.

no quorum 1-1-0
The SM64 / SM64DS section on this page suggests the page be split into "! Block" and "Cap Block." I created a page for Cap Block, but it got reverted because the split wasn't discussed. Since it's suggested that Cap Block be its own article and I previously created a page for it, I think Cap Block should have an article. Also, this article doesn't have any pictures of the Cap Blocks, and if "Cap Block" is an official name and can be discussed in detail, it should probably have an article, where pictures of Cap Blocks can be, since putting the Cap Block pictures in the SM64 / SM64DS section on the ! Block article wouldn't look very good.

Split Cap Block without merging Metal Box

  1. Dwhitney (talk) Per what I said.

Split Cap Block and merge Metal Box with it

  1. 7feetunder (talk) Since we split Cap Switch, I don't see a problem with splitting Cap Block as well, and they have a distinct purpose from the standard yellow ! Blocks that hold miscellaneous items like coins, Koopa Shells, and Power Stars. I do think that Metal Box should be merged with it though, since it has nothing over the other Cap Blocks other than appearing in a crossover franchise.

Do nothing

Make Cap Block an article (take 2) or merge Cap Switch back into ! Switch

This is a continuation of a previous proposal as well as a redo of the above. Simply put, what we have right now is a half-measure. Cap Switch was split from ! Switch, but the block equivalent remains unsplit, and the Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS versions of both are still peppered throughout multiple articles. This proposal aims to simplify linkage, maintain consistency, and hopefully finish the job started by the previous proposal. Here is the summary for why it ought to be its own article:

  • Like the perma-activating switches, the power-up blocks serve essentially the same purpose between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, and are direct counterparts.
  • "Cap Switch" and "Cap Block" is an English localization, as the original term isn't indicative of the type of power-up: in the Japanese version of Super Mario 64, the Cap Switch is properly named 「アイテムスイッチ」 (Item Switch) and the Cap Block is properly named 「アイテムブロック」 (Item Block), which are noticeably less specific; meanwhile, the Super Mario 64 DS object is identified as ITEM_BLOCK internally (VS game, VS_ITEM_BLOCK), and there are completely different, character-switching "Cap Blocks" unused in the game.
  • Additionally, while the English Super Mario 64 DS manual gives the name "! Block" to the yellow block, the Japanese manual gives the name "Orange Block" which, while different from the Super Mario 64 version ("yellow block"), still fits within the colored block naming scheme despite there no longer being green or blue blocks to have to make color differentiation necessary.
  • The arbitrary symbol flip from "!" to "?" is deemed trivial (we're not splitting Tower of the Wing Cap anytime soon after all) enough that Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS content can easily be shared within the same articles, separate from !/? Switch/Block ({{main}} will be used in those article sections).
  • The general sentiment towards the end of the previous proposal supported this idea, but it was slightly outside the scope of the original proposer's intent and the above's result halted traction.
  • The Metal Box from the Super Smash Bros. series is the green block from Super Mario 64 and thus belongs in the same article, featuring its own section.

I may add an option without the final point if there's a demand for it, but as of writing I don't think it's necessary as having both would be bending once and only once.
